Legitimately don't understand why Nintendo doesn't put confirm [A] on the bottom, ie, closest to your thumb's resting position on the right stick. They got it right with the N64 controller and I suppose the GameCube controller and then fucked it up forever afterwards. What the fuck is their problem?
>>
Do you guys have any ideas for what else to label controller buttons besides numbers/letters? I'm tired of letters of the alphabet or whatever the fuck playstation is doing

I like the idea of pictures of the sun and moon for the left/right face buttons, the top button is a star and the bottom one perhaps the "planet" button with a picture of earth

Are you dumb? Sony is the ONLY one who changed. PS1 games had Triangle or Circle as accept and X as back. In Japan all Sony consoles use Circle as accept and X as back.
Nintendo and Microsoft have always used A as accept and B as back. Always. Never changing. Nintendo moved their face buttons around a little during the N64 and GC days, but that's it.

>Sony is the ONLY one who changed.
This is because they fucked up when placing their buttons. Circle should have been on the bottom, then nobody would have complained and everybody would have stuck with Circle as confirm. The reason there were all these problems in the first place was because people had muscle memory for Confirm being the bottom button. Seemingly, only Microsoft and Sega understood this very simple design philosophy.

The function changed but not the layout. Still, that is annoying in a similar way. My complaint is that Nintendo's A/B/X/Y layout and Xbox's are annoying to cross-navigate. Sony's buttons have always stayed in the same place, even if the functions change based on region (well, pre-PS5 anyways).

Given that most modern games use the left thumbstick and face buttons as their primery input method then top is the best configuration as that is the place where the thunbs rest naturally, reducing strain.
Middle is good for 2D and indie games that still rely on the face buttons but control better with a D-pad than a thumbstick, otherwise it is just snoy retardation that forces the left thumb into an unnatural, strenous position for prolonged periods of time.
Bottom has the same issue as middle but for the right thumb instead, and really none of the advantages other than visual symmetry.

>otherwise it is just snoy retardation that forces the left thumb into an unnatural, strenous position for prolonged periods of time.
I've never felt strain on my right thumb using symmetrical controllers. There's another advantage of symmetrical controllers (not the bottom one though) that you aren't mentioning, and that symmetrical controllers can be double claw gripped, whereas asymmetrical controllers cannot, or you have to use your index finger on the left stick.
>b-b-but what games would you even have to use this grip for
If you have to ask, you'll never know.

Nintendo tried something like this with the Gamecube, the A button is at the center and the other buttons sorta orbit it at an equal distance, but they abandoned the idea come the Wii.

If this is true, why did so many people have muscle memory for Confirm [A] as the bottom button? This was the entire reason behind X becoming Confirm in the west on Sony controllers. It wasn't because westerners were too retarded to know that Circle means confirm (though that may be true), but it was because everybody was used to confirm being the bottom button. Pray tell, how was this the case?
>>
>>724608416
It's because Japan reads right to left but fuck man is pisses me off so much. You should obviously design your buttons for where the thumb naturally rests regardless of how your language reads words. The bottom button should CLEARLY be A and the left button should clearly be B because that's the other button your thumb rests on without having to reposition it

Because they're zoomers who grew up with a Playstation, fun fact, the PS1 was initially developed as a disc add-on for the SNES and used the regular SNES controller, the base for the Dualshock's design to this day is still the SNES controller, and the only reason they reversed the confirm and cancel buttons was to avoid infringing Nintendo's patent when they two companies parted ways (Same reason for their shitty horrible d-pad), ergonomics had absolutely nothing to do with it.

I’m just tired of the red/blue/green/yellow button variant, sure PlayStation uses red blue and green but atleast they had the pink square to switch things up a bit as well as using shapes instead.

Does it matter? I really don't get what the big deal is, it feels all the same when you're holding it and looking at the game. The 1 (one) instance where this isn't the case and is actually a problem is DMC because taunting is hard when the left analog stick isn't at the bottom.
>>
>>724607623
Sticks on the bottom is ergonomically superior as long as you have a properly evolved human hand that naturally forms a "C" with the forefinger and thumb. When the stick is towards the bottom of the controller it puts less stress on your thumb's natural range of motion.
Sticks on top puts more stress on your thumb joint by forcing it to remain in a more unnatural position closer to your index finger while manipulating the stick.
The pad and buttons don't cause as much stress in the top position because using them requires much less range of movement of the thumb.
Also, any argument that relies on "left stick and face buttons in the main position!" is retarded as games solely using the left stick and face buttons are few and far between. Classic style 2d games are better with the D-pad and buttons, and most modern games have you constantly swapping between the buttons and sticks, making the argument moot.
Also, asymetricfags always conveniently ignore that the right stick is always in the supposed "inferior" position in their "superior" layout and never address it.
Therefore the only logical conclusion to draw from all this is the best general layout for normal human hands is buttons towards the top, sticks towards the bottom.

You are just describing the standard Super Mario World controls except with your gay W*stiod obsession with making A also the jump button when it is already the menu confirm button.

A was the jump button in Super Mario Bros. Why change what wasn't broken? How often are you jumping and talking to NPCs in SMW?

I liked the three bean prototype controller

When the buttons were placed on a straight horizontal line.
The Game Cube controller made the A button bigger and the first party games were designed around that layout.

The GameCube controller was an accidental success, clearly.

Controllers are made for multiple games.

This game is a clear example of the problem with an omni-interact button.

now what symbol or name for the "start" button, nowadays it makes no sense to be called start, options is okay, menu maybe?
also what for the "select", because Share buttons are retarded
- and + are okay, but i feel like since those buttons are almost always reserved for menus/maps they should have a contextual name
same with xyab, almost always theres one for accept and one for deny, so they should reflect that i believe
