the RPG mechanics aren't in depth, once you get a few hours into the game and the novelty of the presentation wears off it's just a normal JRPG.
Story wise it's pretty mid, you can tell they have more female writers on the new entries.

if you go into it looking forward to an ichiban game, youll be very dissapointed when they mgs2 bait and switch you halfway through the game and transition to a kiryu focused story. Ichibans half of the story is pretty interesting at first but then ichiban finally meets his mom and they just have a slightly awkward chat before they part ways and its never mentioned again. that was literally the whole point of him going to hawaii and they just sideline it cuz atp in the story they realized they have more fun writing kiryu. kiryus side of the game also sucks but its a little more tolerable because its filled to the brim with nostalgia bait and hes just op in general in a fun way. his story is really really stupid and explained very vaguely so you buy gaiden, but that game literally adds nothing of value other than showing you what kiryu was doing in yakuza 7 a little bit. then kiryu fights the final boss and cries like a bitch harder than how he cries when he sees his kids and apologizes for the yakuza as a whole being so evil. you can literally see the writers cutting his balls off in real time.

IMO they also super dumbed down the combat so you can do the same few "combos". its fun to play with at first but the dumbed down combat gets boring really fast.

The map is huge and has literally nothing interesting outside of a few landmarks that get boring really quickly

none of the new minigame content is very fun or fleshed out. the animal crossing sidegame is fine for the first hour or so but also gets boring really quickly

the devs have been on a trend of taking all the bad trends of the recent games and doubling down on them bc style over substance is what sells. you can still def have fun with the game and enjoy more ichiban content but dont expect nearly the same amount of quality as there was in 7

They are more barebones than FF1 or DQ1, I have no idea what you are on about. It having a timed blocking mechanic and QTEs is the extent of "depth".

The only debuff worth using is Shadow Stitch's evasion down, and it's only worth it on Legend because you can't hit anything with normal attacks, only magical ones.

if you're not going to start with the ps2 game (best story, pretty good combat, very short) then do the remake of it: yakuza kiwami. it has a bunch of stupid changes but the script is 99% identical and the combat is probably the best in the series.
last resort is starting with judgment or something which is a weird spin-off but a very good game. do not start with any of the other yakuza/ like a dragon games. none of them work narratively without the yakuza 1 story.

0 on your platform of choice (Not the Director's Cut) and go in the modern order of 0, Kiwami 1, K2, Remastered Collection, 6, Judgment, 7, Lost Judgment, 7 Gaiden, 8, 8 Gaiden.

The former is harder to get into but is the intended way to play through the series and you get to see how all the mechanics evolve, how the maps evolve, how the story and writing improves, how they reuse their content, references, and more.
The latter is easier to get into as it starts you with a strong game but it throws you around multiple engines, gameplay types (Styles were not commonplace until after 0), various levels of map design

Kiwamis are not replacements for the originals, they are sequels to 0. You have not played 1 if you've played Kiwami 1, 2 if you've played K2, 3 if you've played K3, and Ishin if you've played IK.
Kiwamis are not intended to be played if you haven't played 0. K1 regularly talks about thing that happened in 0 and the entire Nishiki additions revolve around the continuation of that story. K2 outright spoils 0's ending. Do not listen to anyone who says you can play K1 first in place of 1, it's not 1.
The Remastered versions of 3, 4, and 5 are worse than the originals due to the 60 FPS introducing countless issues, script changes, censorship, and cut content. Dropping it to 30 FPS does not work if you are on PC as the 30 FPS is baked in under the hood, even though you visually see 30 it still sees 60 under the hood. If you are on PC pachinko is also specifically cut for you.
Judgment Remastered is worse than the original Judgment due to the lighting change, the 60 FPS introducing bugs and various issues into the game, and they changed some minigames for ones that have been used in the series before.

0, 5 and 7 are the peaks of the series, but only 0 and 7 are really entry points. you SHOULD start with 0 but if you really wanna see what the more modern games are like then you can play 7 first, but youll be a little out of the loop with characters youre expected to know later in the story

otherwise, start with 0, if you like it, keep playing them but know that kiwami 1 and kiwami 2 are remakes of old ass games with basically 0 story changes, so theyre basically telenovelas with a coat of paint. if you really really wanna play the newer engine then play kiwami 2 but if you want the basically objectively better version emulate the ps2 version.

i get that 7 is lacking compared to other jrpgs but at least on first playthrough its super fun to try to optimize how you can get the most damage out of whatever shit you can get from dungeons and shops n stuff. the grind on replay is super annoying tho

8 does do a better job with buffs and debuffs but at least when i played on hard my first playthrough it was literally so easy to accidentally overlevel and as long as youre not purposely choosing the lowest damage skills every turn, the games a cakewalk. the only challenge ever comes the bosses that steal some party members, but even then they made it so you dont need a dedicated healer anymore so you can just make do with whoever you half available and group heal with ichiban or something

Literally any AoE Essence is what you should be spamming, the nuke is a waste of MP by comparison when it's not as easy to get MP back like in 8 unless you plan on restocking MP food and item every few battles or visiting a restaurant on repeat. Head Trauma is just for 1v1 stuff whereas most Essences group clear.

Sure, but that's not "depth" and you're mainly just trying stuff out to see what's even worth using. Then when you find what's worth using you see just how much isn't. Even if you put yourself on Legend it severely limits you further as skills that were good on Normal just aren't as good in general.

Difficulty choices aren't available until NG+ just like in 7 since it was paid DLC.

Agreed, it's a major flaw of 8's even though it has the same diminishing returns system as 7. There's so many substories that give you a bunch of EXP and the dungeons cannot be touched or they overlevel you like crazy.

7 is as modern as you're going to get as it's a soft reboot but 8 is pretty much entirely reliant on the previous games to even enjoy. If you only play 7 an enormous amount of it will mean nothing to you because Ichiban's a side character in it and everything focuses on Kiryu and Member Berrying Kiryu.

You can do the modern order I listed with 0 but you are still going to have to at some point play those games because they're nonnegotiable for 8.

It's a soft reboot until the last third of the game, then it starts spoiling you on aspects of 6 and the whole drama in it is based around stuff that has happened throughout the series in various ways. This is a budget series man, you're getting cheap menus no matter what and the Dragon Engine makes you feel like you're controlling someone in a Rockstar game. You'll get more modern features like autosaves when you get to 6 onward but that's about the extent of modernization.

Unless you're one of the usual PAL suspects you likely won't have a translation available so fair warning. Fan patches are few and far between for this series.
