>ignore the yakuza series because it's apparently cutscene heavy, ignore the RPG spinoffs because I assumed they were low effort with the RPG shit tacked on>have nothing to play>see Like A Dragon on sale>it's actually fun>it's only cutscene heavy at the start, and even then it's worth watching because the story, characters and humour are interesting and funny>the RPG mechanics are actually in depth and well done>having a >>blastIchiban is a great character and I just found out it has sequels that are even better. the video game drought is over for me. I'd apologise to the Yakuzafags on /v/ but I think everyone on 4chan is a faggot so I won't, but you guys have good taste.
>>724610568buy an ad retarded seg -ACK employee
>>724610568dont worry, the games after this one and lost judgment are all ass with no substance outside of what wacky stuff you can make kiryu or ichiban do outside of the super bland story
>>724610568Its awesome. Don't play the next one...
the RPG mechanics aren't in depth, once you get a few hours into the game and the novelty of the presentation wears off it's just a normal JRPG. Story wise it's pretty mid, you can tell they have more female writers on the new entries.
>>724611039>>724611076What's wrong with Infinite Wealth? I've heard nothing but good things.
>>724611445From who? Story is just boring. Not a bad game but just doesnt deliver like 7.6/10.
>>724611445if you go into it looking forward to an ichiban game, youll be very dissapointed when they mgs2 bait and switch you halfway through the game and transition to a kiryu focused story. Ichibans half of the story is pretty interesting at first but then ichiban finally meets his mom and they just have a slightly awkward chat before they part ways and its never mentioned again. that was literally the whole point of him going to hawaii and they just sideline it cuz atp in the story they realized they have more fun writing kiryu. kiryus side of the game also sucks but its a little more tolerable because its filled to the brim with nostalgia bait and hes just op in general in a fun way. his story is really really stupid and explained very vaguely so you buy gaiden, but that game literally adds nothing of value other than showing you what kiryu was doing in yakuza 7 a little bit. then kiryu fights the final boss and cries like a bitch harder than how he cries when he sees his kids and apologizes for the yakuza as a whole being so evil. you can literally see the writers cutting his balls off in real time.IMO they also super dumbed down the combat so you can do the same few "combos". its fun to play with at first but the dumbed down combat gets boring really fast. The map is huge and has literally nothing interesting outside of a few landmarks that get boring really quicklynone of the new minigame content is very fun or fleshed out. the animal crossing sidegame is fine for the first hour or so but also gets boring really quicklythe devs have been on a trend of taking all the bad trends of the recent games and doubling down on them bc style over substance is what sells. you can still def have fun with the game and enjoy more ichiban content but dont expect nearly the same amount of quality as there was in 7
>>724610568for some reason i prefer these games (like a dragon, judgment) over actual yakuza
>>724612225thank you for using the spoiler function correctly, fren
>>724610568Very white.
>>724613421What did you mean by this? No seriously.
>>724610568>the RPG mechanics are actually in depth and well doneThey are more barebones than FF1 or DQ1, I have no idea what you are on about. It having a timed blocking mechanic and QTEs is the extent of "depth".>The entire endgame is spamming Essences because only like three skills even come remotely close.>Buffs require you to be in very specific classes to even do and defense debuffs do not work properly at all under the hood so stuff like Malodorous Stench is actually a waste of a turn to use because it's a -3% debuff instead of -30%.>DoT effects are completely worthless as the turn debt just casting it is astronomical (Literally like 10+ enemy turns have to pass to justify applying just one debuff instead of simply doing a normal attack).>A good 70% of the jobs are completely unusable in any serious manner even on Normal.>Any job that uses bladed weapons may as well go unused because nearly all enemies resist it as a type with only one move on one specific job being so overtuned that the resist doesn't even matter.>The entire Voltage gimmick ruins an entire job the instant you try actually utilizing it and needing three bars to do the same damage multiple other jobs do without needing to luck into the three bars is idiotic.8 did a significantly better job at actually adding difficulty and depth to the game while 7, even on Legend, is about spamming Essences while paralyzing, Charming, or Drunking enemies because buffs and debuffs are a waste of your time. The only debuff worth using is Shadow Stitch's evasion down, and it's only worth it on Legend because you can't hit anything with normal attacks, only magical ones.
Oh a yakuza tread. Can any yakuza oldfags tell me the best game to start?
>>724612719judgment series is better than most yakuza games. especially lost judgment
>>724614069if you're not going to start with the ps2 game (best story, pretty good combat, very short) then do the remake of it: yakuza kiwami. it has a bunch of stupid changes but the script is 99% identical and the combat is probably the best in the series.last resort is starting with judgment or something which is a weird spin-off but a very good game. do not start with any of the other yakuza/ like a dragon games. none of them work narratively without the yakuza 1 story.
>>7246140691 on PS2 with the restoration patch (Or PS3 if you know Japanese) and go in release order.0 on your platform of choice (Not the Director's Cut) and go in the modern order of 0, Kiwami 1, K2, Remastered Collection, 6, Judgment, 7, Lost Judgment, 7 Gaiden, 8, 8 Gaiden. The former is harder to get into but is the intended way to play through the series and you get to see how all the mechanics evolve, how the maps evolve, how the story and writing improves, how they reuse their content, references, and more. The latter is easier to get into as it starts you with a strong game but it throws you around multiple engines, gameplay types (Styles were not commonplace until after 0), various levels of map designKiwamis are not replacements for the originals, they are sequels to 0. You have not played 1 if you've played Kiwami 1, 2 if you've played K2, 3 if you've played K3, and Ishin if you've played IK.Kiwamis are not intended to be played if you haven't played 0. K1 regularly talks about thing that happened in 0 and the entire Nishiki additions revolve around the continuation of that story. K2 outright spoils 0's ending. Do not listen to anyone who says you can play K1 first in place of 1, it's not 1.The Remastered versions of 3, 4, and 5 are worse than the originals due to the 60 FPS introducing countless issues, script changes, censorship, and cut content. Dropping it to 30 FPS does not work if you are on PC as the 30 FPS is baked in under the hood, even though you visually see 30 it still sees 60 under the hood. If you are on PC pachinko is also specifically cut for you.Judgment Remastered is worse than the original Judgment due to the lighting change, the 60 FPS introducing bugs and various issues into the game, and they changed some minigames for ones that have been used in the series before.
>>7246140690, 5 and 7 are the peaks of the series, but only 0 and 7 are really entry points. you SHOULD start with 0 but if you really wanna see what the more modern games are like then you can play 7 first, but youll be a little out of the loop with characters youre expected to know later in the storyotherwise, start with 0, if you like it, keep playing them but know that kiwami 1 and kiwami 2 are remakes of old ass games with basically 0 story changes, so theyre basically telenovelas with a coat of paint. if you really really wanna play the newer engine then play kiwami 2 but if you want the basically objectively better version emulate the ps2 version.
>>724614351Thought I finished my thought, whoops. The latter is easier to get into as it starts you with a strong game but it throws you around multiple engines, gameplay types (Styles were not commonplace until after 0), various levels of map design, characters are implied to be important by newer games when they weren't at all, things are referenced that you never saw, etc.
>>7246140690
>>724614039the only essence you really need to spam is the space laser, otherwise you can just raise joongis agility (or whichever one is the one that lets him get more turns) and spam head trauma.i get that 7 is lacking compared to other jrpgs but at least on first playthrough its super fun to try to optimize how you can get the most damage out of whatever shit you can get from dungeons and shops n stuff. the grind on replay is super annoying tho8 does do a better job with buffs and debuffs but at least when i played on hard my first playthrough it was literally so easy to accidentally overlevel and as long as youre not purposely choosing the lowest damage skills every turn, the games a cakewalk. the only challenge ever comes the bosses that steal some party members, but even then they made it so you dont need a dedicated healer anymore so you can just make do with whoever you half available and group heal with ichiban or something
>>724614619>the only essence you really need to spam is the space laserLiterally any AoE Essence is what you should be spamming, the nuke is a waste of MP by comparison when it's not as easy to get MP back like in 8 unless you plan on restocking MP food and item every few battles or visiting a restaurant on repeat. Head Trauma is just for 1v1 stuff whereas most Essences group clear.>on first playthrough its super fun to try to optimize how you can get the most damage out of whatever shit you can get from dungeons and shops n stuff. Sure, but that's not "depth" and you're mainly just trying stuff out to see what's even worth using. Then when you find what's worth using you see just how much isn't. Even if you put yourself on Legend it severely limits you further as skills that were good on Normal just aren't as good in general.>when i played on hard my first playthroughDifficulty choices aren't available until NG+ just like in 7 since it was paid DLC.>it was literally so easy to accidentally overlevel Agreed, it's a major flaw of 8's even though it has the same diminishing returns system as 7. There's so many substories that give you a bunch of EXP and the dungeons cannot be touched or they overlevel you like crazy.>they made it so you dont need a dedicated healer anymoreYou need a dedicated healer in the same way as 7 which was on some side content, specific boss fights, and Legend. It's just that if you're not overleveling or fighting Amon before you're supposed to it's definitely better to be using Geomancer or stealing Aparetif from Heiress with Chitose over item spam.
>>724612225That was because Kiryu fucked up hard by not staying Chairman and he knows it
>>724614195LJ is only on the gameplay departmentJudgement is still the best story rgg has written
>>724614351>>724614351>>724614393>>724614409Should have said this earlier but I want to play a more modern game if possible. I'm ok with missing *some* of the plot. Thx
>>7246166347 is as modern as you're going to get as it's a soft reboot but 8 is pretty much entirely reliant on the previous games to even enjoy. If you only play 7 an enormous amount of it will mean nothing to you because Ichiban's a side character in it and everything focuses on Kiryu and Member Berrying Kiryu. You can do the modern order I listed with 0 but you are still going to have to at some point play those games because they're nonnegotiable for 8.
>>724616634Yakuza 0 is modern. Start with that, or Yakuza 7 like people ITT have already said. They're both the beginning of 2 different stories in the Yakuza series.0 is the Kiryu story, 7 is the Ichiban story.
>>724615519yup, about 3/4 of the shit that happend in the series wouldn't had if Kiryu stayed the chairman
>>724614351Thx for a detailed answer. How much would I miss if I start with 7? I am one very entitled zoomer, I want my 60 fps and modern controls/menus. I also need to find a translation to my first lang and I think it doesn't exist for earlier games.
>>7246140693
>>724616827>How much would I miss if I start with 7?It's a soft reboot until the last third of the game, then it starts spoiling you on aspects of 6 and the whole drama in it is based around stuff that has happened throughout the series in various ways. You miss out on a lot of context why what's happening even matters but you can technically take it like Ichiban is with confusion about it. Like I said >>724616740 you can't go to 8 though. It would be like starting on The Hobbit and immediately jumping to Return of the King.>I want my 60 fps60 FPS breaks a lot of things in this series be it physics or basic combat depending on the game. Even the current games have issues at 60 and especially higher.>modern controls/menus.This is a budget series man, you're getting cheap menus no matter what and the Dragon Engine makes you feel like you're controlling someone in a Rockstar game. You'll get more modern features like autosaves when you get to 6 onward but that's about the extent of modernization.>I also need to find a translation to my first lang and I think it doesn't exist for earlier games.Unless you're one of the usual PAL suspects you likely won't have a translation available so fair warning. Fan patches are few and far between for this series.
>>724615519>>724616752The Tojo clan was 99% worthless backstabbing dickheads constantly trying to ruin things as Kiryu saw in 1, making him realize that it's a waste of time to deal with their crap, and he's further vindicated by how much more of that there is in every game that came after. His only mistake was not doing a better job of avoiding getting pulled back into yakuza bullshit over the next 10 years. Well that and appointing Terada who IIRC he literally met once as his successor.
>>724610568you would highly appreciate kiwamiI was like you until the recent steam sale
>>724616740>it's a soft reboot but 8 is pretty much entirely reliant on the previous gamesDamn this series timeline is a mess. Alright.>>724617262>It would be like starting on The Hobbit and immediately jumping to Return of the King.Ah, I understand now. Well if I like the 7 I will play older ones, and if I don't this problem disappears.>cheap menus Eh I'll manage. Played wow on square monitor with a fuck ton of addons.>Even the current games have issues at 60 and especially higher.Damn. Whatever I'm committed now.>PAL God have spared me. Although the winters would be less unpleasant that's for sure. Thanks for all the advise Yakuza nerds! Now if you would excuse me I need to beat the shit out of a lot of Japanese and a date with a pachinko machine.
>>724612225I put so much time into the animal crossing sidegame but I also went nuts on the business in the first one the second I unlocked it. Combat feels way more intricate in the second one; for one thing you can move around to position yourself.
>>724610568>sequels that are even betterThat's bs, sry. Lad>>iw
>>724611508It's really not worth following the story. I did a replay to finish the builds, but it's not worth it, as everything is weak compared to the players' power.
>>724617517ttd, yay
you should play 0 after, its really good.
>>724611039i really enjoyed yakuza 0,kiwami 1,kiwami 2, but 3 was really boring, from what i read, it seemed like combat is the only problem but man, combat was the smallest thing that affected me, it was the super boring story and locations and game in general was really shit, i haven't played any other yakuza games after that,
>>724615519It's funny how he says as much in his letter to Daigo in 6, but he still dodges that responsibility until Ebina.
>>724617413God forbid he give it to Kashiwagi, the man he's known his entire adult life and pretty much never blundered in any of his roles.
>>724610568I like the series but it's all quite samey, after you've played a few you've played them all pretty much.I hope that Stranger in Paradise game or whatever it's called ends up being good, again it looks like more of the same though?
>>724622183If you get back to it and play 4, you can join us in lamenting Akiyama's diminished role in later games.
>>724615595LJ's story is fine aside from Yagami's characterised as such a simpleton, he has valid arguments against Kuwana but hardly uses them in favor of loudly crying over the death of one character all game who wasn't even entirely innocent themselves Also gameplay wise it's fun but I don't like how hard they nerfed gun damage in it, guns were actually scary to deal with in the first game and not in an overly obnoxious way
>>724610568The series has always comically flanderised it's characters and also kept trying to end Kiryu's story only to keep bringing him back, but even knowing that, I really dislike what Infinite Wealth did to the storyIf they wanted Kiryu back that badly just let the Gaidens be his spinoff series where he's a secret agent guy doing his thing covertlyBoth Kiryu and Ichiban are fucked up now I feel
>>724624442I understand the repetitiveness of him bringing up the death as being annoying, but it's also kinda the whole point.LJ has characters that are clashing on a systemic level, trying to implement massive changes or just thumb their nose at the broken current system. Yagami is the only one reminding them that this ideological battle has led to the real, tangible death of someone whose biggest sin was just being a massive coward.
>>724624050>pretty much never blundered in any of his roles.3 showed he can't take the pressure at all and even the mooks complain about his inaction.
>>724624663He had other ways of doing that too thoughHe himself is the victim of vigilante justice, his lawyer parents were killed when he was kid by folks upset at them being hired to defend a criminal, he should have way more to say surely
