Happy Halloween, motherfuckers. Castlevania thread.
>>724614871OoE > PoR > CotM > AoS > HoD > gap > DoS > bigger fucking gap > SotNSotN is great up until you unlock wolf form and then it really falls apart. All the other games had shit ideas too but SotN lived and died by its gimmick and for its time is was still shit and fell apart after wolf form
>>724615096Put Aria first, then I'll agree to the rest of that.
>>724615228Aria isn't that bad but its gimmick of relying on rng for skills is badYou could make the argument the same for say, CotM with the DSS but ultimately CotM's biggest gimmick was the character styles with different names, such as that fighter never gets the cards to begin withAlso Aria has some of the most boring/same style bosses in the franchise
>>724615292As long as we both acknowledge that AoS was better than SotN, I respect you.
Fuck Konami for not announcing anything this October
>>724615096>CotM that highMy brother
>>724615948All we got are collabs and a music collection. It sucks.
>>724615757AoS is great in general - I'd say most of the 7 are. The problem is that I think others are just better as they don't have their gimmicks so reliant>>724616057CotM was actually the first I played and never understood why people found it hard outside of me being a retard and not realizing dashing plus jumping makes you go further which covered more ground in bossesPlus it felt like the game was done with a concept of actually trying to be more metroid like in terms of 'you found a high a wall, come back later' and not how SotN felt in terms of 'get this powerup, now follow a linear path, ok great'
Could you get away with having Belmonts between Richter and Julius be warriors too (just without the VK), or would that be too contrived?
>>724616431The upcoming mobile game has a new Belmont, Fidel Belmont and it's set during 1870. He might be fake, though.
40th anniversary next year, let's hope for more than just the chink mobile game and another collection.
>>724616431It might be easier to slap a Belmont between Leon and Trevor, but there's the problem of him not being allowed to fight Dracula because that's Trevor's achievement. While we're at it, why was Trevor the first Belmont to go fight Dracula? It's not like Mathias was dead after LoI. Maybe he was just cursing at God instead of humanity and left him alone
>>724617319According to the Curse of Darkness manga, Dracula spent time as Wallachia's protector until they killed Lisa.

>>724617872I like Mega Man
>>724617319>there's the problem of him not being allowed to fight Dracula You could probably have an 11th-15th century Belmont fighting someone else, like a different vampire. Or some other horror/fantasy villain.
I'm playing rondo and I'm still fucking stuck on level 5 :'(
>>724617319A game set between LoI and CV3 starring Dracula conquering the forces of Chaos while using the soul system would be great.
>>724615096Mostly disagree about Symphony, but I have to commend you for ranking Ecclesia so high and taking a fat, wet shit on Dawn. What an absolute stinker of a game.
>>724616431They probably should have gone ahead with that idea they were kicking around during the Megadrive game's development where the clan had distinct branches. The multiple whips idea was pretty neat too. I never cared too much for any attempts to fit the Bram Stoker novel in though.
>>724618252Forgot my image.

I beat Aria of Sorrow Julius mode earlier.
>>724618518I want to believe...
Rondo of Blood, OoE and Dawn of Sorrow sucks.I'm kidding, only OoE sucks.Extremely linear and boring Metroidvania.Wouldn't even finish if it wasn't for the music.
Why does Dawn feel so slow? It feels like the game's running at 85% speed.
>>724618379Don't forget Nathan Graves!
>>724618983And Reinhardt Schneider.
>>724619057And Sonia Belmont.

>>724619520>>724618379I kind of wish Sonia was accepted as canon by IGA, I like the plot twist it puts on CV3, with Trevor teaming up with his daddy to fight Grandpa Dracula.

>>724622528We'll get a Castlevania collab with the new Bloodstained game.
>>724618847Agree with you. For years I kept hearing about OoE and it was the one metroidvania I didnt play. I played the fucking shit out of both Soma games and PoR. Finally played OoE a week ago, the first 15% of my playthrough I thought this might be the best Castlevania I've ever played. Then - The shitty ass map designs kept coming in each zoneThe villager quests werent as cool as I thought they might be, just felt like checklistsThe entire fucking story is 3 characters including you, amnesia bitch. Albus is so bland and pointless as an antagonist I saw the twist comingAt about the halfway point of the game the enemies get "challenging", and by challenging i mean they charge at you the moment you are onscreen with them. So equip a high dps glyph and melt them or die. Thats it, thats the whole "difficulty" I used throwing axe glyphs most of the game. It's just a bland game, like Shanoa's character. It'd even rank it below CotM.
>connection errorwtf
>>724624628It works now.
>>724623271The Dracula skin looks exactly like his design in Smash.
Can see why purist hate 4. In the other games, every room was it's own challenge and had to be approached a certain way. Some required memorization, precision, patience, bravery etc. Maintaining health was very important with how scarce chicken is. After trial and error, you combined everything you learned to beat it in 1 go and it felt good.Cv4 threw most of that away. Enemies don't pose any threat and chicken is everywhere. The difficulty comes just from the platforming. But I still enjoyed it in a power fantasy way. After so much struggle, it feels good to stomp everything with pretty graphics and sound.
i've always disliked the "vampire castle" aestheticin every title i've seen that uses it, it's almost as if it puts effort into looking dated and tackythat said i don't know whether it's the games or the gothic architecture that actually does it wrong
>>724625662I don't know what you mean by vampire castle aesthetics
>>724616431I feel like the main timeline is full already. They might as well do a timeline split like the LoZ with the Time Traveling bullshit. I really want them emphasize that Dracula is evil not just because his wife died.
>>724621891>uhm ayckshually corridor levels are cool but also they a smaller part of a larger game so it's fine that they sucklevel design is *THE* problem, and the fact that DSvanias start at large dawn, pivot into smaller areas with portrait, then conclude with ecclesia is plain baffling

I've been playing the CV games for the past couple weeks. I skipped Rondo and Bloodlines by accident so after I've finished my Richter run of SotN I will go back to them. I think I'll tap out after those two though.

>>724621995HoD level design is the type of garbage I made in level creators when I was 8.CotM level design is fun though, the verticality makes it unique among Castlevania games and there's a reason why games such as Doodle Jump became so successful.

>>724621224I hate that OOE is too slow, you either have to get the winged boots or use the glyph just to walk faster. I also hate that you deal so little damage and have to grind attribute points just to deal more damage, and grinding AP points is brutal even with the Master Ring, which is bitch to get because you have to defeat the Jiangshi where you deal so little damage. and grinding is not a good experience because there's little to no item drops because most of the enemies dont have any items or glyphsthe glyphs are retarded, the weaker melee glyphs should disappear once you get the upgrade, the glyph inventory is too cluttered. magic is completely useless. specially magic since the AP points for magic doesnt scale well, so you're better off using melee attacks, only 2 magic are useful, the globus or acerbatus. everything else is shitty magicOoE is shit
Let's say I want to play Castlevania 64. Do I go with the base game or that expanded version?
>>724628714>Those are more or less small versions of your usual metroidvania level designNo it's not. No metroidvania resorts to copy+pasting to the same extent as OoE. They might have tons of nondescript rooms or hallways but nothing like those elaborate level layouts being copy+pasted over and over so shamelessly.
>>724630053>No metroidvania resorts to copy+pasting to the same extent as OoEWhat about CotM
>>724629918NieR: Automata felt like it could be a 3D Castlevania in the gameplay department.
>>724614871AoS is my favourite. Kojima artstyle, best gameplay, balance, short (no "here's your reverse castle" bullshit content)
>>724627661Goddam I laughed
>>724631031Same.
>>724615096SotN>power gap>PoR>power gap>Souma's games>OoESotN is the only genuinely great one and it's wild that anyone pretends the handhelds are as good or better. PoR has some nice details, great music and likable characters, but all of them have worse level design and progression and terrible levels of tedium. No, some bosses being annoying doesn't make OoE a great challenge.
>>724629918Only 3d action game where the parry is actually good and not just "spam x button to win".
>play Classicvania>Want to crouch and dodge an attack>Stair nears me makes me go down>DieNah these old ass games aren't fun or challenging. Is just outdated bad design to artificially inflate play time. Just like arcade coin eaters. Sorry boomers but there is a reason the series moves on from that. Igavanias are much better designed, balanced and fun.
>>724631512
>>724629189I've played it afew times now but ultimately it felt like after you got the wolf form, you've sort of 'seen everything'I know that sounds like a cop out but it seems like a lot of things in it were just 'throw everything in and hope something works'That's why I consider it the worst (albeit still good).>>724629941Jumping I find slow but in general she's not too bad. Grinding is bad, sure but thr AP thing I never bothered withthe weaker glyhps can use less magic and are faster sometimes>>724631249SotN literally has shit level design - the inverted castle is fucking reliant on flying or super jump
>>724631598Anon is a baby bitch but stairs really do suck
>>724631512It is a bit silly that you can accidentally start walking down stairs but just take it into account and choose your position better.
>>724629941I prefer to play grindvanias without leveling at all. The toolkit suddenly really matters because you can't just crush everything with grinding. That said while I love the way shanoa moves and plays I think a lot of the levels really suck and make me not want to keep going. The lack of items to grind is a good thing but chests are not an improved replacement
>>724631692They really don't suck. It's been a long held nes norm that pressing down can put you through a platform though and I'm not shocked that zoomies are utterly baffled by it when we live in a world with a gazillion buttons. Just pressing up to fire a sub weapon is an innovation in that time period. The point is no one was really confused at that part. It was a common picture of gaming at the time.
>>724631608>the end of the game is reliant on better movement abilitiesGood. Fuck Souma's games where you don't get good movement until the very end.
>>724632198None of what you said changes the fact that stairs suck. They gimp your movement and are just a pain in the ass in general. Less bad in the games where you can jump onto them, but still badI'll take a rope or a mega man ladder any day
What would /v/ want out of a new Castlevania game?
>>724633205I just want yet another Igavania.

>>724633205Igavania with various weapons and gimmicks. Weapons that aren't just straight upgrades. I missed them after playing Chronicles of the Wolf.A Nest of Evil style challenge area but with various difficulty and rewards thats baked into the main game so you can get something out of the challenge rather than just some sort of time trial challenge.
>>724633205I want PoR 2, which is what Bloodstained 2 seems to be. Iga is giving me exactly what I want
>>724633737>Chronicles of the WolfIs it good?
>>724633481Then Castlevania is truly dead ...
>>724633829Not him, but I loved The Lecarde Chronicles II, so I imagine it's more of the same with a bigger budget.
>>724633205A third Sorrow game to turn the duology into a trilogy since the ending of DoS just doesn't sit right as the chronological end of the timeline, not counting the novel and the mobile game.
>>724633205I just want more metroidvania and a inverted castle counterpart, even if its not actually inverted so there's more explorationHarmony of Dissonance did it great, instead of an inverted castle, the "inverted castle" in the game is the more evil version
>>724633829Pretty good but can be janky at times due to how old the engine the game was made of.
>>724633829I didn't like how the combat felt. The animations don't look good and the world was very bland looking. Is more grounded I guess. Lots of villages, caves and forest and nothing weird or cool ever happened. I beat like 3 bosses and dropped it.
>>724633205Hagihara directing.
>>724636410What has he done lately?
What the fuck was he?
>>724636196I actually like that it leans more on horror than the cool gothic atmosphere you know in Castlevania. Somehow the setting reminds me of Simon's Quest since you go around towns, mansions, caves in one interconnected map.
>>724636737You should play the dev's Castlevania fan game, The Lecarde Chronicles II. The atmosphere is fantastic.
So what's the lore behind their friendship?
>>724637138And why are there more of them and why do they become common enemies?
>>724636787Already did years ago when he newly released it.I want a new Castlevania already that I hit even Vampire Survivors and Romhacks but its hard to find a romhack that doesn't end into being a hard mode type hack or something similar. I tried some like the DS Dawn of Sorrow hack that has Juste but it turns some enemies into some nintendo reference for some strange reason. The Nathan/Hugh Portrait of Ruin hack is decent enough but nothing much. Only Aria of Sorrow Alter is the one I can recommend. Its pretty good that it changes some stuff with changing too much things. Notable on it is a Circle of the Moon style Arena challenge that rewards you with an Excalibur without its stone and a Valmanway with zero reduction and has all elements within. Needless to say, they're broken.
>>724636710>he doesn't know
>>724637332Man, Aria of Sorrow Alter sounds amazing.
>>724633205An AU future game set after the events of Dawn of Sorrow's Julius Mode or a Legends remake.
At least the music is good.
>>724618298>Lief Erikson was technically a BelmondoBased. I think the Van Helsings were also going to get lumped in as well, nodding to the old Bram Stoker novel. I don't mind it conceptually but I do think making it all under one family dilutes it a bit. Having multiple distinct families out there, like the Danastys for example, make for more interesting worldbuilding on the whole.
>>724638032the character models are great.
>>724633829
>>724633829It's not as difficult as lecarde chronicles 2, and it's also lacking in outstanding music (since it can't shamelessly remix CV songs anymore). Still pretty fun, there's enough gameplay options, puzzles and general entertainment. Give it a try.
>>724638267What do you even get out of the spike rooms?
>>724629261Now that you say it, if DoS used the touch screen for SotN-like spells instead of fucking Magic Glyphs I'd probably like it a lot more. Killing an enemy and getting a "Spell Soul" that gives you a new pattern you can trace to activate its effect at any time (likely costing MP or even bringing back Hearts, fuck it) would actually be a good use of the touch screen compared to the forced progression tool it is.Just use locks and keys instead of Magic Glyphs for the doors that need to stay locked for progression.
>>724638470Thats a challenge room that rewards you with a Max HP & MP Up orb that different from the usual one since it gives higher max HP & MP and the best Knife type weapon that you can use to easily grind the best armor later.I think I'm forgetting another one.

>>724638823There are times you have to go for a leap of faith since you won't know what positions are the next platform goes so it can get annoying at times.By the way, you can grind your HP and MP to max value once you finish the game. Pretty worthless though as the bonus boss works on a different way.

What's the superior version of SoTN, PS1 or PSP?They both have bad translations but the PS1 translation is iconic and funBut the PSP version also has the Maria boss fight which is cool
>>724629425>They seem to be a husk of of their former selvesThere isn't much evidence to suggest this. It's one of those arbitrary narratives which has stuck pretty much purely because of the circular logic of enough other people having already said it. The one deadline we know for sure that they missed was Scalebound's, whose development occurred over a decade ago and obviously well before the other issue you've mentioned, which itself comes with the caveat of some staff who left (e.g. Abebe Tinari) having stated that Platinum still has plenty of talent left. Quality-wise at least, there was a case for the notion that they were in trouble during their stint from 2014 to 2016, but outside of Babylon's Fall (which the overwhelming majority of people who shit on it haven't played) there isn't really now.I'm not suggesting this applies to you, but I spend too much time on shitholes like Backloggd not to be aware that even some people who demonstrably enjoy Platinum's recent output will just go along with and make concessions to this invisible hivemind consensus anyway, regardless of what they actually think. Bayonetta 3 had its well poisoned from so many different manufactured controversies prior to release that you can just make shit up which isn't actually in the game to criticise it for and no one will tell the difference. More recently, Ninja Gaiden 4 has seen a much more niche version of this with the odd person claiming it has God of War 2018's "suck to target" auto-positioning thing, when really attacks just send you a very far (but consistent) distance forward. Games discussion seems exceptionally prone to these sorts of things compared to that of other media.

>>724651276Wow look at all those flat straight hallways intermingled with straight vertical shafts, many of which arbitrarily blocked by literal keys that aren't tied to your abilities at all just for more pointless backtracking that doesn't even affect how the game plays. HoD is such shit.
>>724650557So is the first Devil May Cry game.
>>724650902To this day I am still trying to understand how anyone could rate CotM as a superior entry. It has to be massive nostalgia, right?
>>724650902CotM is fucking awesome
>>724651598
>>724651570Contrarianism and some people might actually like that loathsome card system, actually seems right up the usual /v/ autists alley
zoomers love HoD because Juste goes zoomies
>>724633205Bloodstained already perfected the igavania formulai think a 3D metroidvania style castlevania would be nice, very few 3D Metroidvanias exist, off the top of my head, Metroid Prime, Batman Arkham Asylum, Supraland and Vomitoreum, and that last one sucks ass
>>724615096I agree with your ranking other than putting SotN so low. I don't understand what your actual complaint about it is; it doesn't really even have a primary gimmick. It just has the best presentation in the series and a lot of content.
>>724651639CotM is the best selling portable game and the second-best selling Metroidvania of the series next to SotN. It was never contrarian to like that game until you shit zoomers started "gassing up" HoD (which flopped and is the actual contrarian game) pushing this narrative that CotM and OoE are bad because your shit got filtered.
>>724651717I'm excited for the new Bloodstained game.
>>724651639I like CotM, but certainly not because of the card system. I never got any cards outside of the required ones and could barely do anything with them. The map/level design is great, though, and the game isn't a complete pushover the way most of the others are.
>>724651960None of the cards are required
>>724651485>HoD is such shit.not more shit than OoE, atleast you can run in circles on the castle to take shortcuts to where you want to go, atleast the rooms themselves have some fucking platforms to stand on, because Ruvas Forest and Argila Swap might look retarded on the map screen, but they are even more retarded when you play em, you could beat those levels without pressing the jump button, is a fucking jokewhoever says>"ItS tHe PeRfEcT mIx Of ClAsSiCvAnIa AnD MeTrOiDvAnIa"clearly has not played either
>>724651960The only thing I don't really like is the lack of a shop. Farming potions is a bitch.
>>724614871
>>724652059This.
>>724652059>>724652127>potionsIt's the fucking easiest Igavania after SotN
>>724651598the movement is horrible, the rooms are giantic for no reason and the card system is unimpressiveit is ok, serviceable, on the level of Axiom Verge or the best Shantae game, which makes it the worst Metroidvania style Castlevania by default, since even OoE, a game that seriously annoys me, i cannot rank any less than "good"
>>724651959me too, its almost certainly gonna be amazing, but im not sure its gonna be better than the first, the Soul/Shard system is just too good
Best way to play rondo and Dracula x? I haven't been able to get to those.
>>724652192I don't think it's an IGAvania, it's some weird in-between.>>724652304I wonder what will replace the system?
>>724618298How do we think Gerhart died? And Soleil not inheriting the VK lends credence to the idea that Richter’s fuck up is why the Belmont’s couldn’t wield the whip for so long.Julius probably isn’t a direct descendant of Richter.
Harmony of Dissonance is the worst game in the series by far
>>724652361>I wonder what will replace the system?they have some good ideas, its going to have a 2 character system like Portrait of Ruin, but on to of that, its gonna have optional coop and classes like a Final Fantasy gamethe only other Metroidvania with classes ive played is Rogue Legacy 2 and well, its my favorite Metroidvania ever (technically Rogue Legacy 1 also had classes, but they barely mattered there)
>>724652480>good map>great movement>cool spells>Maxim modeits better than OoE and CotM atleast
>>724652480Worst than the original Haunted Castle?>>724652507I'm sure they'll figure something out.
I swear to god, CotMfags are actually brain damaged, especially when they praise the map it's all fucking zigzags and Nathan is about half the size he ought to be. God CotM is such shit.>Ass map, nauseating camera when jumping>double tap to run>attacking feels extremely stiff and horrible>anything interesting requires farming
>>724650557I've been saying this or years.
>>724652795shut up zoomie
>>724617872I disagree, the bosses are good, the problem is Death is the best boss fight by far and also the hardest, so it being in roughly the middle of the game throws off the pacing somewhat.
>>724650557only in terms of general aesthetics, they lack the ability locked progression system
>>724652795Nobody is praising the mapBut you're the same faggot who said the map for SotN is superiorSo you believe double tapping to run is somehow, WOSRE than fucking a wolf transformation and then double tapping to runSar, you are needfully doing the trollingplease stop sarThe cows upset when you troll
>>724652931Double tapping specifically to make the wolf form run / sprint is a world of difference from double tapping for the basic function of running

>>724619643I think the only reason Iga didn’t accept her is because Maria’s also a descendant of Trevor and he kind of hinted Maria and Alucard were the progenitors of the Lecarde line (there’s some redacted info in EGM fax that might hint at this too) meaning Alucard would’ve fathered a child with his great-great-great-etc-granddaughter. Which wouldn’t be that bad when you think about it. I routinely jerk off to Pocahontas porn and she was my direct ancestor.
>>724652931>So you believe double tapping to run is somehow, WOSRE than fucking a wolf transformation and then double tapping to runyes, because the wolf is an extra mobility option, run is a basic fucking mechanic, why do you think this shit never appeared again in a castlevania game?
>>724653153Richter's movement options in SotN are pretty good
>>724653202Ah, I see, I seeso... the game that had running first, SotN came out after CotM?stop trolling. you are bad at it
>>724652480You’ve never played Haunted Castle, Adventure, Legends, or Order of Shadows
>>724653265Other games' alternate character modes are probably better balanced but man is it super satisfying to zoom around the castle with Richter's command input air dash.
Konami get off your asses and do something already

>>724653416I like spamming his slide. It's even cool in its own way that it has that second kick that sucks ass since it makes spamming the first slide input fast without getting it take a little finesse.
>>724653512Moonlight Rhapsody, it was in development hell for years before the devs suddenly said they were still working on it last year.

>>724654350I hope they give it an update. The original Bloodstained looked like complete ass before IGA listened to criticism and gave it a visual overhaul.
>>724654350>the protags are both maleAlex is a reverse trap.
>>724652507They said there'll even be cross-speccing with learning skills from one class and being able to combine them with others, sounds pretty sweet.
>>724653965i know its difficult, but i really like Castlevania Bloodlinesif you have the Advanced Collection Aria of Sorrow is the best, and from the Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow is the best, but Portrait of Ruin is great too
>>724654415>DoS that low>OoE that high
You guys DON'T use save states when playing Classicvania kinos, do you?
>>724654869I played Aria first and Dawn is a huge downgrade in a lot of ways. OoE has the best Dracula's castle in the series and I enjoyed searching for the villagers.
>>724654527I thought they said both were boys.
>>724654996Iida said Alex's gender was "unknown" on X, so her being a reverse trap is probably important to the plot.

>>724614871>Dracula is always so smug and bored in the throne room, despite constantly being bodied by any Belmont that makes it in, and even sometimes people that aren't BelmontsWhen will he learn?
>>724656554OoE's Dracula design is pretty cool, I like how his clothes look almost organic.
>>724654903Of course I do. I'm just looking for the cinematic experience when I play Classicvanias. I'd rather not deal with the archaic game design principles and just focus on the story.

>>724629334As a kid, I really didn't like the axe in CotM, because it did poor damage compares to the cross. Now, I understand and love it for hitting awkwardly placed and/or flying fuckers.
>>724656554Curse of Darkness for Dracula, and maybe Portrait of Ruin for Frankenstein. I haven't played Haunted Castle Revisited yet though so maybe that'll change.
>>724657935Actually no, the game is not that hard.I've beaten most bosses without taking damage. The hardest part of the game is beating that atrocious drop rate.
Say what you will about OoE, but Albus mode fucks. Way better than Dawn's Julius mode (aka just using Alucard) and Portrait's Richter.>>724657898THE TIME FOR GAMES IS OVER
>>724654903I use a save state at the first stage of Rondo of Blood, because if I have Game Over and lose all my score, then I just load that Save Slot and start immediately after.Doesn't change too much, only make it faster.
>>724615096OoE is the only castlemania game I've finished, although I've tried and enjoyed others. I think the weird mage gameplay of OoE and also Shanoa being the second most attractive castlevania woman after Soma just made it the most enjoyable to me.
>>724656554I say PoR, because they intentionally went back to a Bela Lugosi design because it was the 75th anniversary of the 1931 Dracula, showing once again Castlevania was staffed by certified REAL NIGGAS who loved monsters and classic horror even though they were Japanese
>>724629941>having to grindI've played through the game several times, and the secret is to just git gud.>the magic glyphs are useless except ascerbatus and globusThat's the strangest take I've ever seen, and I'm pretty sure you're trolling. Usually people love the range and speed of even the early spells, even with their relatively high mana cost, which I don't recall anyone ever complaining about (except myself on my first playthrough). Globus is genuinely great, but I never see anyone talk about it. Ascerbatus is also great for hitting everything that nitesco resists (which you egregiously failed to mention), but I usually just see people complaining about the long cooldown. The ice spells are genuinely pretty bad, and a poor element on top of that, and never find myself using them except against that sand fish boss. The melee weapons suck for having bad range and awkward cooldowns on a bunch of them, but the bows are great situationally, but slow, axes are great when the enemy isn't standing right beside you, and the level 2 and 3 daggers are genuinely very strong, but still have to compete with all the busted magic you have by that point. Then there's redire, which is actually a fantastic weapon, but nobody uses it for that.
>>724656554I liked how in Haunted Castle Revisited you fight Frankenstein's monster AND the doctorAnd the Dracula fight in Grimoire of Souls was also pretty good
>>724658134After the game is over, maybe. She seems at least 30-50% more human after everything get settled with that whole Dracula business.
>>724656554CV4 for Dracula even though he doesn’t get a cool 2nd formHaunted Castle Revisited for Frankenstein’s monster Portrait of Ruin for Death and Medusa They’ve yet to make the giant bat cool imo
>>724659321That’s gay as shit though because the REALIST niggas, aka the devs responsible for the famicom trilogy, were inspired by Hammer films, not Universal films. Medusa is a reoccurring enemy because she was the big bad of a Hammer film.
>>724659979Frankenstein was literally the classic flattop and was accompanied by Igor
>>724626669and it's a reason i don't play the games
>>724659430Not sure why this is, probably something some anon here said, but for some reason I have it in my head she became an immortal nun after defeating Dracula.I think I recall an anon saying she was the mother superior of whatever religious order Sepia belongs to in a Bombergirl thread.Of course I’m about 95% certain Sepia isn’t considered canon.
>>724660047Well of course, Hammer’s Frankenstein was visually inspired by Universal’s Frankenstein after all.
>>724654869>somafagging
>>724660716Uhh no, they specifically avoided elements of Universal's Frankenstein >Hammer refrained from duplicating aspects of Universal's 1931 film, and so it was down to make-up artist Phil Leakey to design a new look for the creature bearing no resemblance to the Boris Karloff original created by Jack Pierce. Castlevania's Creature is always unmistakably the Universal version in various states of jacked up (like SOTN), portrayed by Boris Karloffice and in the original he is of course accompanied by Igor who is not in the Hammer movies at all.Various official art of Dracula like the famous one taken from Frazetta clearly depicts a stereotypical Lugosi type Dracula.
Did an archipelago run of SOTN this year while my friends played ALTTP, Super Metroid, and OoT. Was fun.
>>724660274It wouldn't be surprising if she had some kind of immortality post-OoE since channeling Dominus isn't even supposed to be possible without dying and shit like that always has an asterisk if you manage to pull it off.Needless to say that I doubt Sepia is canon, but it's pretty feasible that everything surrounding her is, all things considered.
>>724661316>archipelago runWhat's that?

Wish we could play gos -_-....
>>724662304Honestly they should treat all the Iga games as their own continuity and disregard them in the future unless he comes back. They can keep SOTN in their new timeline because Iga was only the assistant director.
>>724663960That's why a Legends remake that works as the origin story of a new timeline might work.

>>724652115
>>724663724I finished it. It was fun.
>>724664806I see Konami reusing assets from Grimoire of Souls for a cheap 2.5D game.
>>724664365You’d have to ignore the Maria/Alucard romance or make Maria the reincarnation of Sonia or you’d run the risk of enraging Castlevania’s surprisingly large following of middle aged Japanese women.
>>724664879I'd say there's more than enough to make a new Harmony of Despair out of it. The 3D models and stages are cool
>>724665041I think a Legends remake/reboot would change the future games entirely, so the canon might be different altogether to fit the Belmonts being Dracula descendants.>>724665114I'd love that.
It's amazing how much hard mode improves these games. I thought Igavanias weren't for me because SotN is too fucking easy, then I used a cheat code to unlock Portrait of Ruin's hard mode and played that blind. One of my favorite experiences in the franchises for sure, up there with Rondo and III.
>>724654415Bloodlines > Rondo > CV1 > Rebirth > SCIV > CV3AoS > SotN > OoE > DoS > PoR > CotM > HoD
>>724665421OoE level 1 hard mode is the peak of the metroidvanias and it's a damn shame the series died right after it
>>724659192>score attacking a Classicvania gameUnfortunately, like a lot of console games, the scoring system is fucking retarded because you can just sit there and farm bats/medusa heads.
>>724665421I hear you can get a decent challenge out of SOTN by leaving Alucard without any armor equipped but I haven't tried it out myself.
I watched Captain N for the 1st time recently and I actually like extremely narcissistic asshole horndog Simon. If they ever decide to make Pierre canon they should give him Captain N Simon’s personality.
>>724665434All CVs need a playable Sepia hack.
>>724638634I would if the emulator netplay actually worked for meunfortunately it seems to be highly selective who gets to play with whom
>>724665632I actually started a playthrough of level 50 hard mode right after my PoR playthrough and dropped it because the level design is complete ass and full of gimmicks like pushing those underwater bombs around while moving at 50% walk speed. Also don't like how glyph drops are RNG, would rather just find weapons in the environment like PoR.
>>724665782Weapons, spells and subweapons are also RNG drops in PoR alongside static pickups, and the same applies to OoE
>>724665434Hot glueing the last scion of the Belmont clan!
Playing Symphony of the Night for the first time and I'm surprised by how much I like Alucard's voice. It being so deep threw me for a loop at first yet it's actually fitting for the guy.
>>724665880Shit like the bow and lance are things you would find while exploring in an earlier Igavania, but in OoE they're RNG drops. That's what I don't like about it, The RNG weapon drops in the other games are usually gimmicks or OP versions of the standard weapon types you find in the environment, but in OoE they are the standard weapons themselves.
>>724666009They get him back for the Alucard reference character, Orlok Dracule in Bloodstained.
>>724666151He also reprises his role as Alucard in Lecarde Chronicles 2 and does a bit part + narration in Chronicles of the Wolf.
>>724666291He's also Radu, Dracula's brother in Wallachia: Reign of Dracula.
>>724666009He, Maria, and Richter all sound much older than they are but at the same time it sorta fits the theatrical feel. And I'm pretty sure old horror movies cast older actors pretty often. I think Curse of Frankenstein tried to sell Victor Frankenstein as a 30-something-year old.
>>724666403>Radu>character's name in CotW is UdarSo that's a reference I didn't get since I didn't play Wallachia
>>724666009His line delivery isn’t great, but the VA sounds so much better than every other iteration of Alucard. Every androgynous pretty boy should have a bass filled voice.
>>724666069Generally about half or more of the weapons in PoR are enemy drops rather than being purchasable or findable. The ratio of found glyphs vs. dropped is roughly 2-1, and the foundational melee weapons are mostly just found in levels, including higher tiered versions of the lance glyphs. Not to mention subweapons need to be grinded to usefulness in PoR whereas glyphs are strongest out the gate. I'm not gonna go through and make EVERY possible comparison between the two games, and i'm sure there's some niche places where PoR is more lenient. But frankly you're talking out of your ass, and by my estimations OoE is easily the more generous in terms of giving you weapons.
>>724666784The androgynous pretty boy in the new Star Wars anime had the deepest, manliest voice and it was cool.
>>724661078wow this depiction looks wack!
>>724666965Can't argue with the actual data, but at least in the early game portion I played (I stopped at the mountain pass) it sure didn't feel like my arsenal was as varied as it was in PoR by the same amount of playtime. I'll probably pick it back up at some point, I still liked what I played well enough, it just didn't leave as strong a first impression on me as PoR did.
>>724667092>Star Wars animea what nowis it worse than shitflixvania
>>724667238It's also worth noting enemy glyph drops are blatantly telegraphed to the player while in PoR you kinda just have to guess or get lucky to get good weapon drops. OoE is a super generous game all things considered. Also a bunch of enemy drop glyphs are acquired by "stealing" them during their casting animations rather than just farming them, which is a pretty cool mechanic unique to the game.I definitely recommend going back and playing more of it. The level design isn't as strong compared to the previous titles but the enemy design is really tight and it has some great boss fights. Ruvas Forest on level 1 hard mode is legit harder than pretty much anything in the classicvanias, it's a really memorable experience.
>>724667363A bunch of non canon shorts that just fuck around with the universe, some are good, some, not so much.
>>724667363Made by actual japs, not ironic weebs.
>>724666009His name is Robert Belgrade.I hope that Konami gets him to return for a potential new game someday.
>>724667440I can't imagine it's much different at level 4 or whatever I was with the basic level cap than it is at level 5. It was pretty good and challenging, but also felt kind of like a rom hack that just copypasted enemies everywhere. That's an issue I have with Igavania games in general though, considering they tend to copypaste enemies from earlier games in ways that almost don't even feel like thematically coherent.
>>724638267>indie dev tries to not make a platformer behave like Celeste.>ImpossibleThis trash is not castlevania
>>724667767The difference of a few levels gives enough of an HP buffer to allow more mistakes but yeah it's pretty neat. I kinda wish more levels changed as drastically as Ruvas Forest, the hard mode changes mellow out more as you go on.
>>724666009VA also appears in Bloodstained
>>724667936I hope that character returns in the prequel.
>>724638992I’m guessing Death Mercury was the whip Soleil fought with when he was under Dracula’s influence. I wonder how Gerhardt died and if Soleil was at all responsible.
>>724640373Post it.
>>724667858I like the difficulty of the Classicvanias more, because as challenging as that forest was, it was literally just a straight line with completely flat terrain and the same couple enemy types infinitely respawning. Classsicvania usually uses few enemies but places them in ways that combine with the platforming to make unique challenges for every segment, something which I felt never really got translated into Igavania since you're so much more mobile. Would be cool to see a game that has Classicvania movement with Igavania exploration.
>>724668162Doesn't matter because Lament of Innocence condensed the lore into there being only one whip used by the Belmonts and the Morris cowboys: Vampire Killer.

>>724670424Are we here to talk about Castlevania or random people you are obsessed with?
Who do you think Konami will outsource to for a new Castlevania game? PlatinumGames is looking most likely.
You’d think the Morris clan would have some connection to the Claíomh Solais, what with them presumably being Scottish

Happy Halloween niggers. Beat 1 the other night now playing 3 (US).

Give me a famous monster you’d like to see as a boss in the future.
>>724651570They are tourists, when i talk to a CotM fan it feels like I'm talking to a Castlevania newbie, they'll say they like it because it's hard and has some good bosses, yet most castlevania games are like this (death in particular is a fantastic boss fight in nearly every castlevania), and i don't see them shitting on the game's visuals, it looks and sounds worse than Castlevania Bloodlines which is much older than Castlevania CotM.
Just started PoR Hard Mode (never did play this one) and holy fuck I'm getting my ass knocked around. I'm a shitter so I'm only playing Lvl.50 and it's still kicking my ass, I respect Lvl.1 players a shitload more. That said my third-ish Peeping Eye just dropped the Eye of Decay (which I've never seen) so I consider it a blessed run all the same. Also I got Summon Skeleton.
>>724676143>That said my third-ish Peeping Eye just dropped the Eye of Decay (which I've never seen) so I consider it a blessed run all the same.Real lucky as its one of the rarest drops there. Depending if you're willing to 100% the maps, it might become a more gruesome play as you have the keep the Eye of Decay to your active character for it to be effective.
>>724674330Challenged myself to get unstuck before an anon might come along with a suggestion and did it. Was missing the spike breaker armor and the stone letter A both in the Garden. >>724676715I really enjoyed the Lecarde games despite the jank and a handful of questionable design decisions.I wish Castlevania got more fan games of that quality.

>>724680835Just rerelease SoTN with QOL changes like not having equip consumables and adding an NG+ and hard mode and the Saturn content.
>>724681504gamer cred
>>724681534Since the Saturn controller had more buttons, they handled the consumables by using their own button. Basically a third hand slot, but only for consumables

>>724614871>halloween>advance collection on steam isnt on salefug
>>724681897That was much better. Though they should probably make using items similar to the other IGAvanias.
>>724677148Lecarde Chronicles and Chronicles of the Wolf absolutely nail the atmosphere, which is something that not every CV game manages to do. LC2 is full of creepy and slightly off-putting vibes that keep you on edge. Wolf didn't have as many creepy moments, but even it still managed to have some good ones.
>>724664643
>>724682728Konami can literally do what Bloodstained did with the Curse of the Moon games and make smaller releases in between the big ones. Konami hiring Mig for a game might be fun.

>>724614871Oh hey what a coincidence. I'm Playing SOTN for the first time, first Castlevania game in general. I'm rather miffed that the first half-decent boss I've fought so far (Werewolf and Minotaur in the Colosseum) I was horribly overlevelled for and killed too fast. I've never felt a bigger mismatch between how much I liked the visuals and design of a fight and how much I hated the actual fight itself as Granfaloon.Overall I'm enjoying the exploration and its utterly gorgeous to look at, but I think I've ruined it somewhat by playing modern metroidvania's first, the combat makes me feel like picrel.
>>724692578Combat gets better once you get faster weapons.
>>724668426The most (in)famous segment of CV1 is the hallway before Death, you can definitely make hallways interesting by mixing up enemies and really forcing the player to play around them, and I think hard mode ruvas forest does a fine job of that. It's super reminiscent of that CV1 hallway.
>>724691646Never agreed with this. The 3D games, aside from LOI and LOS2, are fine and better than most modern slop. Igashit was alright as far as time-waisters go, but I preferred the format the N64 games were pursuing. Still annoyed I waisted a Xmas present on a dreamcast then they canceled resurrection.>>724692578Castlevania is all about the atmosphere - visuals/music. The earlier games are the same in that regard except the jumping was dogshit.
>>724682728100% agree, especially with the assertion that not all CV games get the atmosphere right. As much as I love the DS games they’re way too anime.
>>724693876*wasters(ed)
>>724692578Yeah SotN isn't particularly renowned for its difficulty. There are many pushover bosses, and some that are late-game enemies recycled as early-game bossesTry seeing if your weapons have a special. Sometimes it's quarter-circle forward + attack, some other times it's back-forward + attack.

>>724693876>they canceled resurrectionCould retooled it for GameCube exclusive.
>>724698691Remake is misleading. It's an entirely different game.
Where the heck do I find a clock subweapon in SOTN?Is there a place that's guaranteed to spawn it?
/v/ says CV4 is bad because is easy but it legit has the hardest last level and Dracula fight. Have to go though these 2 >>724637138 and death all in the same level. And Dracula has the most move sets. Thank God he didn't have third roided monster transformation.
>>724700404>hardest Dracula fightI don't care if it's a bit of a meme, putting pits in a Dracula fight is psychotic.
I beat CV3 with savestates because I wanted to play as Grant but the game doesn't want me to have fun.SC4 is easy to have fun with
>>724701368The extra challenge makes this one of the better Drac fights IMO. Though people overhype it as being some insane challenge but all you do is just hunker down on a pillar, throw axes and dodge shit. I think people struggle with this cause they wanna zoom around and chase Drac instead of taking it easy.
I swear the /V/ faggots who pretend SOTN is trash are no different that journos who didnt understand shit about games back in the day.
>>724701518I use only savestates on shitty parts that require memorization like the falling blocks on that game. Waiting and excessive trial and error aren't fun design.
Which game has the coolest Drac fight? I'm split between OoE and PoR
What the hell, Bloodlines has difficulty options and multiplayer.
>failed to complete my run of castlevania 3 before midnightThe damn 5th stage on syphas path man...and the gargoyles
>>724702352This game feels weird to play. Graphics are great but the animations look jank af.
>>724702508It's faster paced than most classicvanias but I actually like that about it, it's really snappy. It's a short game too so it's a lot of fun to do quick 1CC runs on compared to something like SCIV which feels like an endurance test.
>>724702943Art style reminds me of Darksiders. Looks exaggerated. Mermen are huge lol
>>724703116Also play Darksiders III (Belmont tier whip masters) and Bayonetta 3 (witch gunslingers)
>>724614871Should I play CV: LoS2 or Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines?
>limited continues It's actually over for me
>>724705807Its not so bad. The levels are short enough that replaying them doesn't wear you down and you will see yourself improving with each attempt.
>>724706570That and the fact that there is a hidden 1-up in almost every level
>>724706570Lost with Morris in the spinning tower. Restarted with Lecarde. Who the hell is this guy and why is he so strong. Can cheese platforms with the spear leap and can do double hits by holding the attack button. Does Morris have any special ability?
>>724707448>Does Morris have any special ability? He can use his diagonal air whip to latch onto ceilings to swing across gaps, which is likely where you got stick with him in the tower.
>>724665434WHERE'S HER SOLO GAME!!!
>>724614871fuck this garbage. Dark Souls 1 2 3 and Elden Ring exist for a reason. doing what Castlevania was supposed to be.
>>724692578SotN is too easy, but that's it's only real flaw. It's still incredibly fun to play and explore in. Some of the handheld ones trade away a lot of the good parts of SotN for "difficulty" that still isn't any fun, and some retards think that makes them better games.
>>724701995Journalists have always been retards. This isn't anything new.
>>724710594There’s always 99 luck mode, but even then it fails to be all that challenging
>>724689982Case in point Kingdom Hearts and Mega Man. Think about it bunch of handheld games similar to Castlevania and yet they are so hit and miss or even if they start good like Mega Man Battle Network they quickly become stagnant with the cheapquels and fizzle out.And then you have Konami's Metal Gear series it tried to do games without Hideo Kojima and the results were questionable like Snake's Revenge or Metal Gear Acid. Castlevania honestly has a stable enough reputation. Shame that somehow Castlevania simply never sold that well. You would think that slaying monsters would be popular in gaming but nah.
>>724675086Ars Goetia. Seriously how come Castlevania never used the forty Ars Goetia demons as bosses? The only ones the franchise used and as regular monsters were Buerl and Stolas. These are the baddest dudes of Hell they are Satan's judges and jury for how to damn mankind.
>>724707448>Who the hell is this guy and why is he so strong. There have been some leaked prototypes and it turns out he was originally even crazier, with an ability to stick his spear out in any direction and just wait for anything to fly into it.
>>724675086A legally distinct Godzilla would be cool.
>>724701995>2D is ... le bad>doesn't pay attention to the pretty straight forward set up>confuses Dracula X/Vampire's Kiss with Castlevania IV.
Why is it so hard to make a 3d game with the formula.
>>724711720>The only ones the franchise used and as regular monsters were Buerl and Stolas.it uses more than that
>>724699915Subweapon spawns are fixed. I think there's one just before the lower rooms in the Marble Gallery but I'm going off memory.
>>724621012I respect your opinion but I find 4 too easy to put in the top slot and 3 too good to be so low
>>724712532>A giantess. The lack of giantess material for Castlevania is disappointing.
I finally finished bloodstained ritual of the night it has everything good and bad about sotnUnironically enjoyed the spinoff games more
>>724713730are the spin offs more metroidvania or classic?
I played Castlevania 1 when it came out. The original Castlevania games suck actually, btfo by Capcom and other Konami output and like snk and irem and shit. My favorite is SoTN because it's the best and my opinions are right If you say OoE is the best Castlevania game you legitimately do not play video games or are trolling. Guaranteed 100% that the irises of your eyes are deep brown almost black like a cockroach color. I finally played it recently and it's literally shovelware
>>724713729Real shame because Castlevania has the most underrated female characters ever in long running iconic gaming franchises.
I miss this nigga like you wouldn't believe. I wonder how long before Konami breaks the glass and collabs with him on CV again. >inb4 he's a hack, he barely made SotN etc. etc. He made Aria of Sorrow, your argument is invalid. Shame about his 3D games though.
>>724714773The reason he's a hack is because he HAD the chance to make the Julius Belmont game but instead chose to waste time and budget money on games like Curse of Darkness, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclessia. And to make matters worse even when Iga left Konami? The company still kept funding Castlevania games like the Lords of Shadow trilogy. So Iga has an ego problem and he is responsible for us never getting the Julius game.
>>724714773>He made Aria of Sorrow, your argument is invalid. The argument is invalid because he made a much worse version of SotN?
>>724714883Nigga he's the reason a Julius game is even an idea in your head. >made Order of EKINOssia instead of fanslopbased >has an ego problemthat's why they got Hideo Kojima of all people to be a "producer" just to tell the devs he has a homosexual preference for men with facial hair
>>724713773classic
>>724714883>chose to spend time and budget money on great gamesI don't see the problem.
>>724701995>I swear the /V/ faggots who pretend SOTN is trash are no different that journos who didnt understand shit about games back in the day. This wouldn't have happen if SOTN fags would stop telling people new to the series "yeah its the only real game worth playing don't bother with the rest" You niggers don't like Castlevania series, you just like SOTN.
>>724715735>You niggers don't like Castlevania series, you just like SOTN.I like the Classicvanias and SOTN. Iga has just never directed a good game on his own.

If the cards were found as exploration rewards instead of random drops I'd be a lot nicer to it.Ultimately I think Aria of Sorrow's soul system does everything the DSS system does in a much more fun way and in a way that makes the game much more replayable.
