What killed Xcom?
>>
>>724627730
Xcom 2 having turn limits and both games being way too fucking expensive for way too long.
Xcom 1 was still fucking $80 like 8 years after release until it finally came down in price.
>>
From my experience, 9 sectoids

Don't worry; you pay them back in the sequel
>>
Too much superhero crap.

more Xcom

Marvel
>>
Lol. C'mon. You know why. Do I really have to say it?
>>
>>724627730

Time limits were abused but they are not that difficult, just annoying.
The devs killed Xcom, with their Marvelization obsession, the same thing that'll kill WH40K.

XCOM:EU was a surprisingly good tactical turn based strategy game, but you could (and kind of had to on iron man runs) play ultra safe because activating groups of enemies too early also let them instantly act upon their initial spotting. Enemy Within gave the optional MELD resource to force you to move faster but you could still play conservatively and get all the MELD you needed for a squad of super soldiers or cybermen.

XCOM 2 doubled down on timers to stop the safe play, but isn't quite as enjoyable on a moment to moment basis because it's effectively forcing you to make bad calls deliberately. You can lose a lot of well trained soldiers because you had to make a timer and activate a group of enemies or run right into a hidden overwatch you didn't see.

Chimera Squad butchered the current lore and attempted to make "memorable" characters rather than the blank slates that people generally liked and most of the characters are kind of shit. I think only the snake is generally liked by being surprisingly racist to aliens.

If there were a theoretical XCOM 3 I don't think I'd be willing to play that after Chimera Squad.

Vidya jews have been way too stingy for the past decade or so, games almost never go on sale for less than -20%, -30% anymore, back when physical distribution was still a thing you could often buy games for 10-15 dollars a year after release
>>

Literally lead to the XCOM devs getting fired.
>>
>>724628256
They need to step up their gameplay, it's absurd how much more advanced in this regard the original game from fucking 1994 is, I don't much care about the setting, I liked the first contact, pseudo-guerilla or whatever CS did
I think Dragon Commander approach would be the best, give us well defined characters in the mission hub that you can affect with your decisions but your squaddies should be blank slates

The tone of Xcom2 was all over the place. I thought the game was going to be a tactical survival horror, reading the announcement, but no the aliens took the planet but you're still free to roam around and do raids, fight a bunch of stupid humanoid aliens in uniforms and have jokes about onions green burgers. Compare that to the absolutely nightmarish stuff that was featured in Terror from the Deep, especially the (text version) game over that described how utterly fucked humanity was. What does Xcom 2 do? Haha all people get in ze clinics, all ded,, yey Avatar project :D:D:D:D

>>724628430
To be honest that was doomed to failure from the beginning, nobody wanted a marvel game years after the mcu lost steam
>>
>>724628520
I would like it if the alien hunting global organization wasn't pretending to be some Men in Black type thing and just was out in the open. Then maybe we could get larger battles as we include national troops as well as the XCOM troopers in it. Some real 4X style big battles against the X-Ray scum.

The Chosen are constantly murdering thousands of people associated with you and mocking you for it.

>>724628616
It was a game that appealed to nobody. XCOM players didn't want Mahvel shit. Mahvel slop eaters didn't want XCOM with heroes. The game was designed as a card game battler with the RNG elements being your cards, and on top of that, it had Persona-like social elements with the characters.

I love the games but same as other devs. Got Woke with Chimera Squad, then tried to suck the Disney dick with the Marvel game and failed.

To add insult to injury, now the 2K client that is required to play is literal spyware. to XCOM is officially buried.

you what? i got the game for a tenner a year after it came out

I am not playing open X-wound, zog off

I reinstalled xcom1 and decided to try out the long war mod that people go on about and since I was at it I installed LWR as well.
I don't have the level of autism required for this. I just wanted more options for my soldiers to go pew pew at aliens not this statfest.
Back to enemy unknown at normal for me!

>shoot in openxcom
>game calculates a shot in real 3d space
>shot misses
>hits some dude to the side of the target or some barre or whatever, puts a hole in the wall
>this is for EVERY shot in burst, individualy
vs
>nucom
>either hit or miss based on percentage
>when you hit, you hit
>when you miss, you miss, all the shots
>when you miss, every shot goes left and up, every time all the time
>when you miss, the missed shots just fly away and that's it, they don't hit anything, they can't kill anyone else
basically it's arcade shit
>>
for me it's the bullshit numbers
95% chance to hit displayed, more like 17% chance to hit in reality = I uninstall and leave a bad review
>>
>>724627730
cost cutting at the studio and there wasn't really much to improve in their version of the formula anymore

Why do a lot of devs hate when people stall in their games anyway?
>>
>>724633121
>>when you miss, the missed shots just fly away and that's it, they don't hit anything, they can't kill anyone else
I think they can actually cause destruction. It's very limited, because so much isn't destructible and like you said the calculation is retarded, but I'm fairly certain that if you're shooting inside a UFO and miss you risk fucking up the central computer, power supply and similar expensive components. Which is pretty much the only time it ever comes into play.
>>
>>724633635
I'm pretty sure that's just confirmation bias. 95% chance to hit means on average one in 20 shots will miss, 98% chance to hit means one in 50 shots. During a normal playthrough you will shoot hundreds of times, if not several thousand times, and while not every shot will be a 95% one you will probably have many dozens of those and it's completely normal for some of them to whiff now and then.

I remember reading somewhere that some gacha games or similar shitty skinner box mechanics tend to actually round up 95%+ chances to 100% or almost 100% because in the human mind it feels like it's basically guaranteed and then if it fails it feels like utter bullshit even if it was perfectly mathematically correct. So to keep people coming back they just always let you win on 95% odds so you don't feel like you got shafted and leave the game. XCOM simply doesn't coddle you.

>>724635978
When on a tight timer it's possible to activate a unit, have it run away and set up overwatch where you can't see. Normally you'd clear the area carefully but again if you have 1 turn left to extract you might just have no choice but to dash forward like a retard.
