>>724639771It's the former. At the end of 3, Lucy and Demifiend start Armageddon and during that battle Demifiend defeats YHVH. Lucy takes YHVH's knowledge and realizes he can't take the throne, partially because the throne is cursed but also because he comes to understand his own role in the Great Will's design. He becomes a Bodhisattva, a Buddha that does not pass on in order to help the mortals, and holds the throne waiting for his groomed messiah (V MC) to reach it. In the final battle he fights the MC as the Great Will's avatar in YHVH's place because he cannot escape that role, but in defiance he passes on the knowledge for the MC to escape Mandala (the neverending cycle of Law and Chaos) ensuring his world will not end up like any other one in SMT neverending battle.
