What went so right?

Nintendo was highly restrictive on their 3rd party games, Sega was busy fucking themselves over with the 32X/Saturn, and the CDs that Playstation printed on were much cheaper than the competition. Sega also pissed off GameStop (and many others) with the NA Saturn launch, and Sony ended up undercharging for the Playstation 1 causing a lot of stores to push it heavily since they were getting so much profit off each one.

Sony embraced new technology (which was not hard given that they manufacture them).

1. The PS1 had CDs which allowed games to be bigger and more ambitious
2. The PS2 was a DVD player, which meant non gamers had a reason to buy it
3. The PS3 did poorly compared to the Wii and 360, but it at least had free multiplayer
4. The PS4 did well because the Xbone was shit and Nintendo did their own thing
5. The PS5 did well because the Xbox series S was shit and Nintendo did their own thing

My favorite revisionist history is when tendies who were 9 at the time explain how the PS2 was a cheap DVD player even though it was literally never cheaper than an average DVD player.

Right? I had every Sony console since the first gray playstation and I think Sony completely lost the plot. They did partially recover at the end of PS3's life cycle but PS4 was utter disappointment. It was so bad I looked into PC, bought the parts, built my gaming PC, and never looked back. When Sony announced PS5 I felt nothing, and didn't even buy one, which would be the first time I skipped a major Sony console launch. I don't think I will ever go back.

This shit sucked for gaming, endless loading times

A couple of very, very good gens, followed by three gens of coasting off the goodwill of said good gens. Seriously though, those good ones were fucking good.

I love Vita to death but it didn't "go right" for Sony. Hell, just about everything wrong with it was Sony's doing and everything based about it (beyond the raw hardware) was in spite of Sony. Rumor has it that if you say Vita three times in the presence of Andrew House, he'll explode.

8th gen was the time to do it.

Only movie hobbyist bought dvd players at the time. You only started to see regular dvd players everywhere after 2005.

Exactly, I'm no longer the target audience.

>good hardware

Good documentation for developers. Looking at you, Sega.

Nintendo lets them have every single game except Mario and Zelda for two generations

they simply offer the most affordable way for a non-enthusiast to play the titles they want to play in their living room with minimal hassle. for your average dude who hasn't played games for years but wants to play BF6 with his buddies, grabbing a ps5 slim is a no-brainer and offers an incredible value.
believe me, i wish sony still made quirky japanese AA titles and JRPGs and whatever else. but their market position is undeniably strong currently. i hope their new handheld will encourage more experimental titles again, and they can recapture the credibility they had in the ps3/vita era on the software side

my parents bought a ps2 just to watch DVDs when I was kid. I don't think the DVD player was as little of a factor as you think
>>
>>724655401
Are you retarded? Do you think N64 games had no loading?
>>
>>724658023
You could finish a super short 2D level on PS1 and you'd have to wait. Yes, it sucked.
>>
>>724658170
I feel like thats just because games were designed differently on PS1 even 3D games. But N64 just hid its loading better
>>
>>724657790
Your parents were retarded because they spent $200 extra on a console when they could have got a DVD player for $100 at the time.
