None. They're all terrible. I rented one from Costco for 90 days (free of course) for my trip to see my in-laws in Norway and got one of the nicer ones with a 5070Ti. It ran like hot garbage. Thermal throttling, locked down bios (even after unlocking the hidden options with a keyboard sequence), extremely slow VRAM and highly VRAM limited (even Stellar Blade slowed to a crawl).
They are not worth it. Get a gaming PC and just stream to a handheld or shitty laptop instead.

>>
>>724662561
Gaming laptops are the worst of both worlds.
Either get a desktop or a proper laptop depending on your needs. Gaming laptops are a shitty compromise that won't last as long as either of the above
>>
>>724670995
Good. Any modern gaming laptop GPU will run games from the early 10s, which had great graphics but were well-optimized, perfectly fine. Devs need to stop putting out unoptimized garbage that constantly requires buying massive new housefire bricks from nvidia. There is NO excuse for any modern game to not run on a gaming laptop, devs will have to start hiring engine programmers who know their shit again instead of cheap jeet code monkeys.

Just the things I've noticed between my gaming laptop and work Mac/Zenbook.
Battery life on a gaming laptop is never as long as advertised. They claim 10 hours these days but you get around half that even while doing nothing but web browsing/watching videos.
Build quality is generally than similarly priced non-gaming laptops. My gaming laptop was plastic, but my other two are metal. The screen is much worse than my Zenbook/MacBook screens.
My gaming laptop served me well in college, but I can't see myself buying another one

It's also literally made to be open and upgraded making it easy to upgrade RAM, upgrade wifi, add another SSD into the second slot, etc. Got it on sale for $1100 reg price is like $1500 or something

Yes I own Desktop too. But with the prices now I would rather buy another laptop

If you have a desktop, get something on the ~500 usd end (deck, ally, legion go), they're not super powerful but will play just about any game made before 2020 very well, and will serve as an excellent way to get through emulated titles that you may not have otherwise tried.
If you have no desktop, get something like a laptop or the new xbox ally thing for $1k~, you'll have a hell of alot more compat with newer titles.
I have a 4090 desktop at home and use a deck I got for $200 off craigslist and after opening it up and drowning it in bleach to get ick off of it, it's pretty much part of my daily carry. With a dual boot of win, I also use it as a full on laptop, and set it up when I run con booths. Lots of people forget that you can just... fucking do shit with it. Install windows on a deck, install steamos on an ally, do whatever you want, it's all there.
>>
>>724676963
oh yeah, but to be clear, handhelds will not replace a desktop, they will never be the same as a desktop, you will never be "just as good" with a handheld. They exist to fulfill a purpose of portability at a cost of fidelity and "just-werks-itude", as you have to contend with heat pretty often with every device unless you live in siberia.

I would not ever recommend them as a primary PC, onl as a secondary.

You can build a 1080p gaming desktop for $480 that can play most triple A games at 1080p high 60fps+ and most indies at 144fps+

Laptops are a scam. Also this PC build I listed you can upgrade it in the future for a 5800X3D and a more powerful GPU in 5-8 years. And these are brand new parts besides a used GPU. But really it just needs a better GPU the ryzen 5500 is a really good 6 core CPU.

I bought my Legion 4 years ago. 2 years ago the screen became grayer and grayer with thin black horizontal lines. It became so bad I had to lower the framerate in Nvidia and then when I tried to turn it back up a bit the screen went completely black except for a thin grey horizontal line at the top.

So I connected to another screen via HDMI, and both the additonal screen and the laptop screen works, but only if I have the HDMI in the additional screen and then there's still horizonal lines that flimmers on the laptop screen. And if I try to do any required windows updates, the update shuts down after 99% and the additional screen stops working so I have to connect the laptop to a TV, press esc+ctrl+alt hundreds of times then connect back to the additional screen to get an image and the update hasn't gone through. This has been going on for 6 months.

Oh and two out of four USB ports suddenly stopped working out of nowhere. Just one day they decided to stop working.

I don't think I will ever buy another fucking Lenovo Legion

They'll learn the hard way.

midrange desktop pc, and cheap used thinkpad for stream gaming via moonlight is my way. My fans don't even activate.

I can see having a gaming laptop for college or something, I'd never actually game on it unless I had an external display, mouse and keyboard for proper ergonomics. Using linux of course.

Buying a laptop just for gaming is stupid. If someone wants to buy a laptop, then it should be for work first then gaming second.
If you want budget pc gaming, you should rather buy a steam deck which is more portable than a laptop. If you want to be a proper pc gamer, then you need to cough up 2k at least and build a decent pc rig. Once you have your pc system set up and ready to go, you will never look back

I'm considering getting a laptop myself but I'm going to wait closer to the holidays for some sales. Laptops always go on sale around the holiday season. Around Black Friday is always a good time to shop for electronics, especially considering Black Friday isn't even a single day anymore. Most retail outlets do it all week now.

Gaming laptops are foolish. A laptop "4070" is way weaker than a desktop equivalent, the experience of using it with a shitty keyboard and screen is way worse, if you use it as an actual gaming machine it won't last long.
If you're already using a laptop for work/travel, a regular business laptop can already play a lot of older games, indies, emulators etc. to waste time, no need to run AAA shit.
And if you really want mobile gaming, get a Deck or Switch if that's your fancy. Gaming laptops don't fill any need.

I got this bad boy in 2015 for 1200€ and it refuses to die. Planes, trains, cars, japanese porn games, subnautica, modded skyrim, 2010 AAA slop. Crusty but resilient.
Hinges are strong, new ssd, when windows shits the bed I'll install linux on it.
So my money is on asus, but not something too cheap.
>>
I bought a 3070 gayman laptop in early 2021 when there was the problems with shipping GPUs because of COVID and for the shit I play it's been okay but whenever I felt like playing AAA slop it really struggled, mainly on thermals. Also it's an absolute pain the in ass to clean out and do any maintenance, why do these companies not want you to dedust your fans. I wouldn't do it again.

Here are the facts.

Gaming laptops have portability and that makes them really useful for anyone who has to travel a lot, spends time away from home during the day, or likes to sit in various places in their home while gayman. For people like this they are absolutely worth the cost.

That said, the caveats are huge.
1. Thermals. They get hot, which makes the fans ramp up. You should expect a hairdryer type noise while you play. For me this is an absolute dealbreaker

2. Longevity. Because of the heat, the parts degrade and the gpu will break. It will probably break with heavy use. And repairing it isn't viable.

3. Price/performance. You pay about double compared to desktop.

Personally I would never recommend a gaming laptop unless just playing undemanding games. eSports, indies, old games, that kind of thing. As soon as you start to push the laptop, things begin to go wrong. This is why the true patrician choice is desktop PC + handheld.

at this point just buy used. getting new AM4 cpus is dumb as fuck unless it's a good deal for x3d, but this doesn't happen anymore. same goes for DDR4 memory really, and in this case you picked some abysmal single channel CL22 sticks.
i live in shithole eastern yurpoor and i can get used ryzen 5600 + b450 + 16gb of ram for like $100, and that's already assuming people overprice this shit quite a bit.
>>
>>724683395
Not true, LCD Deck is cheaper by far unless you buy used (but you could also buy a used Deck). Also much more convenient, you can play directly on it instead of needing to bring a gamepad and awkwardly set the laptop on your legs or whatever.

I recently bought on sale a 16c32t Ryzen laptop with a 4060, 165hz screen, upgraded to 64GB of RAM, and put a second SSD inside I dedicate to Steam games. I actually bought it for my job, but I thought I'd want to play on it too. I haven't played anything at all since the first day I got it because my Deck is just way more convenient.

There's 40+ years worth of games you can play on Deck including games released today, and only a few years of boring AAAslop that's just too demanding for it.

If you're playing a game mainly for visual spectacle then you don't want to play on any laptop or handheld, you'd want to play on a desktop or console. If you're paying a game with anticheat then be honest and admit you'd never want to play it without kb&mouse anyway.

I have over a thousand games on Steam and there's only one I can't play on my Deck that I was actually disappointed about, Expedition 33.

I bought like 5 premium laptops in my lifetimes
Midgrade is absolutely the way to go.
It's good enough to not overheat and you can just trade up to a newer laptop if you want something new.

I see nothing with gaming laptops nowadays, and I have a Deck and a desktop rocking a 3090.
If you want premium then stick to desktop because cooling is very important for premium components, but gaming laptops are absolutely ideal for "good enough" scenarios.

I have an Asus Strix and it doesn't look too profoundly gay with the RGBT lights unlike most laptops. I have no problems with it after I removed the ROG shitware.
>>
>>724714670
There's nothing to upgrade for. I'm fine and will continue to be fine with 1080p. I have an OG PS4 for whatever the laptop doesn't run. Plus, prices for parts are high and optimization is dead.
