What are your thoughts on the body of work of best selling writer Alan Wake?
>>
Playing this for the first time. Do I miss out on anything if I'm not switching between the characters constantly? I've been mostly playing as Saga. I just don't like bouncing between characters, I'd rather finish one before continuing with the other.
>>
>>724673103
Only so much as once you've done everything as Alan, you're now stuck with a totally uninteresting character.
>>
>>724673103
Not really. At some point their path will converge and you will have to finish both to continue further but apart from that it's mostly both characters working on their end on what to do. You won't really miss out on anything, it's just the intended narrative to have a change of scenery to break up the tensions and developments. Just like most books structure themselves really.

Part of the reason why I just wanna stick with her and get it over with. The gameplay and story are nice but Saga is pretty boring herself. She's not even an attractive negress, which is a shame.

>>724673363
Thanks, that's what I figured was going to happen. I'm enjoying AW2 more than I did the original.
>>
>>724673830
It was my goty last year so enjoy. Alans parts were legit kino. Saga was just alright to me.

I thought it was a pretty good game. Alan Wake's part was pure kino. There are a few parts in Saga's story that were good.. Like when you see Ahti, and when you do the dark ocean summoning.

I finished Saga's side first and found that it was the better part of the game since Wake is basically just walking around in a city square and Bright Falls is really atmospheric and spooky.
Best part hands down was Tim Breaker's DLC with Lake House being a good Control throwback.
>>
>>724677293
Also forgot to mention, you're supposed to play through Wake's segments first since it feels like a fever dream with Saga's segments explaining what Wake is trying to do.

Extremely Lynchian, 1 is Stephen King worship and 2 is David Lynch worship. Saga sucks and there should have been more enemy variety but I think it's Remedy's best game since Max Payne 2.

I might agree but I think that's just because a lot of them are kinda mediocre now. I really liked the first half but it dragged a lot, especially near the end after the FBC show up. I still haven't done the Final Draft just because I was really tired of playing. But the first few hours were pretty incredible and very scary.

Mizzurna Falls for the PS1, and then there's a game called Silver Pines that just got announced that's due out next year. There's also this fan game called "Twin Peaks: Into the Night" that unfortunately got cancelled, but there's a demo out there.
>>
>>724677293
Ehh I thought the opposite. Bright Falls isn't bad in Alan Wake 2, but I feel like it was nerfed somewhat atmospherically in comparison to the first game. However I think the way they do the Dark Place in Alan Wake 2 is heavily atmospheric and darkly surreal. Alan's sections sucked me in more than Saga's on balance.
>>
>>724679424
Silent Hill 2 is bit of a Lost Highway re-imagining.
>>
>>724678967
No, it really is all women. One of the studies actually tracked how likely women were to recommend to their friends that they cut their hair short and found that women with long hair are more likely to recommend it than women with short hair.

The most attractive women will do what they can to reduce their competition more than unattractive women will, they just have less competitors due to already being ahead of most other women. Average women do it less, to more other women because they have more competitors.

It has more in common with The Fugitive than it does Silent Hill 2.

All three of these involve a dead wife. That's about all they have in common.
>>
>>724681501
That's my second favorite of the generation, it's not random.
>>
>>724672975
Alan Wake 1 & 2(and AN) are probably some of my favorite "kinda shitty Xbox 360 era" type games, as I'm a sucker for weird, interesting stories. Gameplay wise they're probably a 6, 7/10 at best. But they're my favorite 7/10 games out there.
>>
>>724681592
Lost Highway and Silent Hill 2 are both about a man enduring psychological torture in a supernatural purgatory due to killing their wife. That's what I mean when I say they have the same basic premise. It's an incredibly common observation, especially Team Silent often lists Lynch as a big inspiration. They aren't exactly the same of course, people often exaggerate the similarities, but they are a lot closer to each other than the Fugitive
>>
I think I find it endearingly campy but the ending of the second game is a bit too up it's own ass
>>
>>724673103
Just switch on every chapter end

what you talking about?
Also bringing in Warlin Door (Martin Hatch) which is most likely Saga's father is the reason they made her black
>>
>>724679675
The start and the trailer park is where the game really shines in my opinion. Once you get used to the taken and start running to the next objective, all of the magic just vanishes.
Wake's segments work like a fever dream so it really just becomes that when you think back about it and try to remember it. The best part of the whole game are the parts that include Ahti.
>>
>>724681389
Steam runs on Linux just fine, and has for years. EGS doesn't even try. I remember when Tim Sweeney was freaking about Windows Store and talking about how they were gonna do some Linux shit.

Well there are other interpretations but that one is by far the most common. Guy refuses to accept he killed his wife and is trapped in a horrifying delusional loop as a result. Especially since the film was partially inspired by OJ Simpson case, a guy who famously killed his wife

is the enemies and horror actually varied and scary? or you just deal with pathetic shadow people like 99% of the time yet again?
>>
>>724687998
There's more defined horrors, it takes from control in that aspect, but it's still moreso atmospheric than overtly horrifying.
>>
I never understood the hype behind the games.

Especially with the "combat" it has.
>>
>>724688156
I havent played Control either.. so no clue what you mean by "defined horrors"..
>atmospheric
urgg.. so another lame "horror" game then, gotcha. I need intense FEAR in my horror, not just spooky atmosphere- the latter doesnt scare me at all
>>
>>724688207
Cult audiences like what they like.
>>
>>724688232
Then yeah don't bother.
Control is an action game set in the universe with alan wake, except you play as a not-x-files agent who has to handle a bunch of supernatural, extraterrestrial shit, and alan wake's typewriter is one of the objects that's housed there. The combat in that game is a mix between quantum break and alan wake, it's more refined, instead of just "point flashlight, then shoot". That's a part of it, but there's more, more enemies that are like puzzles instead of just direct combat. The monsters are more than JUST shadows now, you see some callbacks to control throughout, that's what I meant by defined horrors, horrors that already exist and are known to the audience (in theory).
fear and jumpscares are a different type of game, definitely avoid.
>>
>>724688232
Control is about an eldritch horror invading our world through the covert government agency that deals with SCP type shit. The invader appears to basically be an evil sound wave that infects people, turning them into husks that are no longer human, but there are other entities, one of which you can actually see and it is a straight up giant other-worldly monster.
>>
>>724688328
>>724688392
Ok thanks guys, the way you both spin it, I think i should give Control a try instead. Could be more fun than AW2
>>
>>724672975

>>
>>724688521
The ultimate edition has been given away a billion times on every platform, you might have it sitting in your epic or gog libraries if you have them, before you bother pirating.
It might also give you a bit more reason to play AW2, if you like it.
>>
>>724687998
It has jump scares, you will get spooked for the wrong reasons
It's still a decent game, moreso if you've played every other remedy game
>>
>>724688721

>>
>>724672975
Alan is a better character but saga has far better environments. Ripoff Shining Hotel and a gay train station are fucking boring. Shitty new York is boring. Scary woods in some Podunk town is kino. I wish Alan was in Bright Falls and found himself in the same surrealist environments that incorporated the spooky woods. Idk if it's fins but Scandinavians have some fucked up scary forest lore and it shows in Sagas portion. I wish they expanded on it a bit more with video game trickery endless forest segments
>>
>>724689208
Alans stage is actually not his stage
He's in a Max Payne (Alex Casey) world
>>
>>724689081
Thx bud , hope so too
>>
I liked the game less because they made Saga Anderson a negress.
>>
>>724689293
When Casey is giving monologues its kino but still I think the bright falls environment is better, it's a shame the enemy encounters are so samey and formulaic. In an earlier chapter you run into an inconsequential lighthouse that doesn't serve the plot in any capacity and there's random enemies placed in and around it, yet the game never evokes the same feeling after that, it's always very well signposted and predictable encounters, even at the coffee theme park.
>>
>>724689208
I feel the exact opposite, Saga's sections were kinda boring after the first few hours, Alan sections where always super sick and memorable and way, way scarier, and his writers room mechanic is actually good and isn't as annoying as the mind place thing.
>>
>>724689381
I dunno anon, I don't think theres a bad stage in the game, I think you might just like cult in the woods better than the rest, which is kinda what the whole first Alan Wake was

I disagree. I was really interested in what was going on with Saga and the events in Bright Falls. Although I wasn't a fan of them giving her "Swedish ancestry", even if that means tying Quantum Break's Hatch in to the story. I also enjoyed her mind palace mechanic, it was a neat way to assist the played in making sense of what was happening. Profiling was also cool, especially when the Andersons got involved.

I didn't care for it. It's an expectations subverted soap opera, which unfortunately means it's bolted onto a soap opera. You need at least a minimal tolerance for dumbshit drama which I don't have.
>>
>>724688521
Control is definitely more fun than AW2 (although the faces are rough), it's a straight up action game with infinite ammo. I'd honestly recommend starting with Control and then playing Alan Wake if the DLC area got you interested, and then pirating AW2 if you are still interested. This is how I played the games, anyway.
>>
>>724698839
Original can be painful to watch because the music repeats ad nauseam and there's a lot of nonsense teenage romance subplots which add nothing to the show and a main story which suddenly seems resolved halfway through but then uses a boorish villain to continue it.

Return seems to handle things a lot better and doubles down on the surrealist elements, erasing most of the irrelevant content except for these 3 minute random bands playing at the end of the episode. It's hardly perfect either but I enjoyed it more.

The movie (a prequel to the original) seems like Lynch's teenage rape fetish. It borders on the disturbing and Laura crying or freaking out chews up about 2/3rds of the runtime.

>would i like AW2 more?
No you wouldn't. AW1 atmosphere was nice, campy but comfy. AW2 has none of the charm that AW1 had going for it. Even the remaster has more soul than AW2 IMO.
>or you just deal with pathetic shadow people like 99% of the time yet again?
Literally just this but without the Twin Peaks aesthetic. The game looks amazing but besides graphics, I think the first game is better in every aspect.

Why aren’t they calling him max payne btw? Is it just some pseudonym shit? It took me a second to realize it was max but then I felt the kino radiating through my headset

>Why aren’t they calling him max payne btw?
Rockstar owns Max Payne.
>Is it just some pseudonym shit?
Almost all of it, yes, but not quite. Alex Caseys and Aleksi Kesä actually have some notable differences from Max Payne and different iterations are on a continuum with each other, where usually four share a trait, but one doesn't.

It's filler. Worth a play if you like AW1 combat I guess

American Nightmare is worth a play at least once for the best version of Scratch gets some screen time. It's only about four hours long, has some fun weapons and encounters but also the structure is repetitive by nature.

I liked it, but I don't really know anything about Alan Wake. Last time I seen anything of it was decade or so ago as some youtube played DLC or whatever of it, I didn't really care for it.

I wouldn't go that far. Lake admitted he needed to use the fan wiki to write Alan Wake 2 because he didn't even remember his own plot
>>

Very funny that they couldn't get any DEI investments from making an Alan Wake game so they had to make it about some random black lady and the game still make them go bankrupt lol

Loved the first game back in the day, did Ila replay with my roommate to get prepared for this and now we're going through it like a spooky show together. I'm playing and they watch and we work together on puzzles. We went through control the same way, so this story has been really fucking interesting. Just did a chapter with a surprise face from the past that had us questioning the whole time.

Also, I'm personally swapping back and forth, just because I like breaking it up. But I think I enjoy saga's side of the game more. The clue board and the world is just much more interesting than Alan and his insane delusions, even if his segments are super cool to see. The Herald of darkness was particularly banging, even though I kept dying on the final segment and had to reatrt it a few times (broke the musical illusion a bit)

i actually preferred alan wake 1 over alan wake 2. something about it idk. anyone else?

Overall yeah. AW2 feels more generic

Think of all the characters in this game as alternate versions of Remedy properties from alternate realities
Even Saga
Also F for Max Paynes VA

>OH NO, I NEED TO USE MY REALITY-WARPING TYPEWRITER TO WRITE A WAY TO DEFEAT THE SCARY LAKE! AAARRRGHGH IT'S SO DIFFICULT! I'M GOING CRRRaaaAAZYYY!
"=Chapter one="
"Once this sentence is put to paper, the Lake-bound Presence and all iterations, extensions, and expressions thereof will permanently and irrevocably cease to exist."
"The End."
There you go, problem solved.
'Keep it simple stupid' wins again.

>No Saga doesn't hate whites, it's just the darkness making her evil!
>Please ignore the part where the game explicitly points out that the darkness just enhances and takes advantage of your faults and weaknesses! (in other words, she already had those views)
Daily reminder that Saga unironically wants you dead.

Alan’s story in one was more exciting, the pressure is way higher throughout the whole game. I really enjoyed 2 though, shame it didnt sell shit.

I don't really care about the story, is 2 worth a pirate for the gameplay?

It's a very story-heavy game with shallow combat. If you don't care for the story then this game won't be for you.

This. Hotel might have been my favorite area of the game and actually managed to spook me for a bit.
