You ever wonder what inspired video game designers to add arbitrary death spikes into video games like they fucking exist in the real world?

I've NEVER just seen "spikes" out in the wild.

I saw anti-perching spikes to keep away pigeons less than 30 minutes ago at a gas station. Leave your house anon?

>Pay our attendants enough to keep litter off the ground and make the storefront more inviting

Gas station owners piss me off
>>
>>724677395
Nah pigeons are just looking for perches to perch on 24/7, it has nothing to with litter, you have to build things with this knowledge in mind

>>

They would likely look harder in areas where food (trash) is abundant, don'tcha think, captain retardo?
>>
>>724675736
My main gripe with this design philosophy is that it eliminates any creative thought or freedom of strategy from the player.
The level CAN ONLY be completed in one specific way with these specific, precise inputs. It becomes less about adaptability, skillful knowledge, and reaction time and becomes more about memorization and muscle memory.
Literally just turn off your brain and go through the motions until you win.
I guess it's why robotic autists love this type of shit, as well as speedrunning (which essentially turns into the same thing...learn this very precise series of timings and inputs and then just mindlessly repeat to perfection).
>>
>>724677947
But speedrunning is lots of about finding new strategies and optimizations. How is it not more creative than just idk following a story?

The genre is too easy and many people have been playing them for decades at this point. This is why we see so many super difficult only for the hardcore types of platformers.

it's about repeating an exact sequence of inputs someone else figured out until you get lucky enough for all the randomness to swing in your favor

Flash game-era game design is absolute dogshit. Checkpoints every minute but every single screen is trial and error instant death trap galore. No sense of pacing, no variety, no sense of risk and reward by rewarding those who managed to stay alive for long periods of time.
Absolute dogshit.

I saw this vid about a dude who played video games so much as a kid that he developed a fear of grass because it reminded him of spikes from video games

He was also terrified of water (because water in video games back then almost always meant death), mirrors, and among other things, the letter P

It was kinda wild
>>
>>724696976
Path of Pain? I think it only leads to some extra lore bullshit and a reward of some kind. I did force myself to go through with it, because I do hate myself.

Oh wait I just checked, there is no real reward just a cutscene.
>>

Stuff like that is pretty fascinating. For whatever fucking reason our monkey brains can end up coming to conclusions like that because of completely fictional things. Rumor has it that some people these days have this weird condition where too much gaming has made them see HP bars etc. on top of real life people just like a videogame comic would have done in the past.

Yeah gaming has unironically rewired my brain, for better and for worse. At this point everything I do in my mind is achievement based. Me learning a certain amount of new recipes, doing a certain amount of overtime, getting my degree, getting married, etc. everything has an imaginary point value associated with it that keeps me going

Oh and the aforementioned person is called “Ulillillia” if you’re interested. Really amazing guy

A challenge that's just needing to perfect a fixed sequence is something that belongs in the rhythm game genre. The less creativity and adaptability games require the worse they are as games.

Ah, yes, the Path of Painfully Explosive Butthurr With Extra Serving.
After about 70 tries to get past the two metal flies there (with most of them being interrupted before that) i had used a trainer with full invul. This way you can see all the bullshit, while travelling normally and even can actually explore things a bit normally withou getting buttblasted every few steps for the next 4-5 months. However - at the very end there is a small fight with two big scythe-wielders like ones you have previously encountered in the palace, just to fuck you up, as you have to jump into the pit and just between the two withour knowing that. And after that you have a 3 second stationary cutscene of a small (now big) original Hollow Knight standing still together with Pale King with your backs to you looking into nothingness. You get your optional (don't count for Hunter) small nothing-meaning record. And that is the very moment you understand, why it is called Path of Pain.
But, seriously, using the trainer will help you to either walk it normally as if it would be just some hidden corridor and to try yourself at parts of this challenge without actually experiencing frustration. In fact, palace has some hidden rooms (room of Queen, room, where scythe-wielders were made (and a heavy implication, that the Collector is actually one of them with his instruction to "protect" goong awry) etc.

The bigger shithead agave is the lechuguilla--or as we call 'em, the "let-me-getchya". Those sons of bitches will stab you through your jeans if you so much as brush past one. They get you about an inch deep, draws blood, and they leave a fucking microfilm in you so you don't even scab up right away. Fucking sucks. Don't go bushwacking in Central America where these fuckers are abundant.

Nta and I don't live in USA, but it is kinda hilarious governments there spend money on this kind of stuff instead of just building apartments for the homeless and helping them to become members of the society again.
I am from country with "housing first" policy tho, but I would think murica would have more than enough money for few apartment complexes per city.
>>
>>724697806
Homelessness is often caused by drug addiction and mental illness, you could probably help in the first case but the second is almost impossible.
>>
>>724675736

>>
>>724697806
You'd think the city would want to keep their homeless warm and dry if only to prevent spread of disease. Even if you don't give a single shit about them, this makes no sense.

>>
>>724697806
We have something close to that, it's called Section 8 housing and you only pay about 30% of your income as rent, regardless of what you make. It is arguably worse and more crime-filled than actual homeless camps. S8 neighborhoods are basically groid warzones that you should not expect to survive unless you enter in an armored vehicle with coax guns.
I cannot fucking imagine the kind of kowloon hell that free apartment complexes would become. You would need 24/7 armed security on every corner of every hall, doing regular checks on people's persons and rooms and disallowing anything that wasn't food or clothing (and searching through those boxes too). The cost of construction would be a pittance compared to the necessary upkeep.

It's basically for Karens and Karens (male) who spend all of their time status-LARPing and don't actually live there.
Hostile architecture is sold in the same aisle as oversized cars, bright white LEDs that go purple and "Live, Laugh, Love" posters.
Fixing the problem is always going to be slowed down by mental illness and drug addiction, and it's always going to be difficult to eke out a status-LARPing compatible win when trying to address that, since it's more of an ongoing effort with fewer visible results than just shitting spikes everywhere.

Some homeless you can help, some you can't. Seen cases where homeless would just rent their free housing to someone and continue living in the street for example.

The railways used to have 1st class for the toffs with expensive tickets and lavish opulence. Then 2nd class was less nice but still good and the tickets were priced for that. But to let the poor partake of the new service there was a 3rd class that was super cheap but they were basically cattle cars with pews and were largely open to the elements. People naturally asked why they couldn't at least enclose them and make them a BIT more habitable and the reason was that too many people who could afford a 2nd class seat would save the nickel and travel in scum class if they didn't make it that shit.
If you make tent cities more hospitable people will choose to join the "homeless community" to escape the rat race. If you do your utmost to ensure it's an awful experience you keep the rats running the rat race just to keep their 4 wall s and a roof.
It's not just a capitalist thing. Human nature means people will naturally gravitate to an extreme bathtub curve if you don't put roadblocks in place.

>Nta and I don't live in USA
that's the main problem
even americans fall for it and think "let's just do it like the nords"
the issue is that over there you get instajailed for drug use, thus all the homeless are temporary and mentally stable
in burgerland most of the homeless are drug addicts that will instantly and permanently ruin any housing given to them
that's why the shelters (that are far from full btw) have a strict no drug policy that the homeless seethe at

>the issue is that over there you get instajailed for drug use,
Da fuq no you don't? You usually get sent to rehabilitation if you want so and still get an apartment. My friend was in bad drug cycle and got an apartment and welfare(so he can buy food) and rehabilitation help because how the fuck do you get rid of your addiction if you don't even have a roof above your head or any kind of stability? Like the drugs themselves aren't the problem, it is the lack of safety or stability and only social contacts being your dealer and getting no help for it. Making an addict go cold turkey is sometimes borderline lethal.
Do you even know what you are talking about or are you
>implying
>>
>>724697806
Homeless are homeless for a reason.
If you give them everything you wrote they would just sell it for cocaine and continue being human trash. They literally can't be helped.
>>
>>724702805

>>
>>724702040
>Like the drugs themselves aren't the problem, it is the lack of safety or stability
NTA but no, drugs are literally the problem. Your instability was created by long-term drug abuse
>>
>>724675990
Spikes communicate their purpose easily. You would expect falling onto or running into them to hurt, so you avoid them.
>>
>>724704742
Yes, maybe I expressed my point poorly so my bad.
But what I mean is that if you think that someone can go cold turkey instantly without any social safety net or programs and get 9-5 job with a snap of your fingers then that isn't gonna really work.
So what I meant is that the drugs aren't as much of a problem as not having any chance on getting back to society. If someone is actually treated as a human being and gets proper help, they may also get rid of the drugs and their addiction as their life goes on.
Now you have homeless people who can't get a roof above their head because they have a drug problem, but can't stop using drugs because they are addicted and only social connections are other druggies and dealers. And they can't get their own apartment where they could at least live because they don't have a job, but they can't get a job because they don't have an apartment/house.
It's a complete mess and other countries have mostly realized that people need a home first and feeling of stability and safety before they can get anything else under control.
If you can't even be sure you might be able to feed yourself tomorrow or that nobody will help you if you get in trouble, then your mental health gets fucked up completely
