Why did video games seem more relevant to pop culture 20+ years ago? Was it just because people thought video games could replace television and film one day? Obviously video games make more money today and are more popular than ever, so is it just my age?
pop culture existed 20 years ago because facebook, twitter and tiktok had not happened yet

>we need to establish the culture around this thing to sell it>the culture was established and runs on its own now, no need to spend money on elaborate things anymore
>>724715848Exactly what I was going to say.
>>724715670there was a pop culture back then, you don't have one now.
>>724715670PS2 was the peak of gaming
>>724715670the internet destroyed pop culture
>>724715670Nah. Graphics got better and made normie fucks pay attention
>>724716258internet culture was better until zoomies ruined everything.
>>724715670this is a weird way of thinking, you're basically saying "jews were spending more time framing video games on television so it was heckin more relevant in pop culture"an unthinking golem way of being almost
>>724716258No iphones did
>>724715670A lot of those gaming events with celebs were paid by sony to promote the ps2 as a popculture event, it worked
>>724715670is that chris evans?

>>724715670Whats Skillup doing there
>>724715670Same thing happened with /v/ in 2010s>RRREEEEE VIDEOGAMES WILL DIE BECAUSE OF MOBILE!
>>724717769When networks/shows like G4 and EP were still around, they would interview celebrities all the time. And most of them had a respect for video games that just doesn't exist now. It's hard to explain, but it's like today video games are what they are, and that won't change too much. In 2001, people had maybe a higher expectation for what they could be. I think the celebrities back then yes, were paid by companies to shill, but it was far less cynical than the bought and paid for streamer era, because video games were actually cool back then. It was a sweet gig at the very least, not like a streamer who has to plug a dogshit mobile game for 7 hours on Twitch.
>>724715670Is that Corey Feldman?
>>724715670>Victor Lucas isn't even on the air in Canada anymore

>>724719239At least he's still grinding doing his thing on YouTube and Twitch. I feel bad for the guy. He put in so much work over the years, really dedicated to his passion, and is not getting the rewards for it. He pulls so few viewers it's sad. I think back to the late 90s and early 00s where Vic and even Tommy were definitely playing through all these games and giving honest good reviews and I wonder how they had time for it. It's almost kind of depressing to imagine how rushed and buys their lives were, never getting to really sit down and appreciate a good game the way us losers can with all our free time. I look at these celebs and think the same thing. There just isn't enough time to enjoy life.
>>724719615Either "messed up" or "ugly". Usually means ugly in reference to a person, and pretty much exclusively used by young boys. They mostly seem to use it when talking about who they would want to date.>What about Femanon? Would you?>Bro, no way! She's chopped! The kids all know what it means so it's pretty fuckin rude to say.
>>724718486It's several things:1) People saw how fast video games were advancing and were genuinely impressed by the leaps and bounds they made in only 2-3 decades. A person even casually invested in video games would have seen this change from Pong machines or the NES to the 5th and 6th gen of consoles.2) People were just a lot more optimistic about the future in general. The modern pessimism about everything stems from how the economy has been raped since 2008 and never really recovered (although the actual pessimism regarding that only really set in during 2012). People were a lot more authentic and honest about how they felt about shit as well.
