Yeah all they had to do was not put a lot of shit in there. More modern means more useless clutter. The opening cinematic was kino. Need to take a break to soak in the first few missions.
>>
>>724717552
Half-Life 2 always reminds me of it for some reason, especially when you're running away from a helicopter
>>
>>724729204
Execs think detail means better so we need more detail. Thankfully UE5 is there to support them on this quest for universal photorealism and minimalist modern UI.
>>
>>724731789
It's not just that, modern graphics are ridiculously blurry and suffer from terrible """HDR""" effects where the shadows are too dark to see shit and the highlights are too bright to see shit. All that cinematic postprocessing shit was made to ruin the readability of 3D graphics in video games.

Yeah, TAA makes things blurry. DE HR to MD for example, first one had old school AA then MD had TAA. But part of the reason TAA was necessary because of the amount of clutter worsened the problem with older AA techniques. HDR is also ass but sometimes it's on purpose in Metro/Stalker games where shadows are meant to be deadly.

MD also had MSAA, the problem was that MSAA was absolutely useless in MD due to a plethora of reasons.

Mirror's Edge itself. There's no other option, the game is in a category of itself. Nothing else even comes close, it's unique and stranded in its time. The feel cannot be replicated. Just feel this feel by, you guessed it, playing Mirror's Edge once more!

Yeah... Just wish we could have old-school pre-baked lighting with supersampling by rendering 4k down to 1440p or something to that effect.

>>724725719
I remember not actually disliking ME:C other than city traversal limiting you to a few points when going between regions/islands. Did it have some mechanic where you needed to do side missions/challenges to actually progress story? Because I think the story itself was actually similar to ME1 with mostly set pieces but it's been so long. Also was there some kind of grappling hook?

NTA but it's a pretty common take that the combat in the game was dogshit. The go-to defense is always that you're meant to run not fight but then these people haven't played their own game because the game has segments where you had to fight to progress (as demonstrated by how even speedrunners couldn't figure out how to skip them).
>>
>>724747950

Ok nevermind, I got to the ending. You start off getting shot at point blank by CPF and you latch onto the helicopter. You end up jumping back onto the building that CPF was shooting you from. They just dissapear and ending plays as if you wouldn't get arrested 5 seconds later. Unplayable dogshit game. You're right.

incorrect and gay. every combat encounter in this game is either scripted cutscene or optional. No exceptions. Speedrunners tend to take some fights because in certain cases, it's faster to go through enemies than around them.

Anyone prefer the city in mirror edge 1 than the city in 2?

Well, yeah, the first city actually looked like a city. I've posted about this a lot, the city in Catalyst literally looks like someone's idea of what a futuristic city looks like, but without actually being a city. The architecture of the open world is so fucking retarded, not to mention the city looks and feels like there's no people in it, whereas the city in the first game had no regular people, yet you could still feel and hear the sound of background life.

I'm still confused to this day why the people at DICE thought they should have people completely unrelated to the first game's development make Catalyst.

You can't even go down to the ground level in ME:C. It shows a profound misunderstanding of what the first game was about. Half the missions had you going down to the docks and sparring on the ground. You end up running through train tracks from the ground, or going down to the metro.

The only ground level Catalyst had was the very beginning, when Faith is getting out of prison.

I'll admit, some of the set pieces, i.e. the mission levels, really looked nice and the music that Solar Fields made is still great, but the first one is way better.

i'm surprised more games don't do baked GI like mirrors edge. dynamic lighting seems to have ruined the prospect for it in the form of raytracing and other methods that allow light to be influenced by moving objects, so i guess it has to do with the need for things to interact with the lighting and the surroundings rather than have really polished environmental visuals.
>>
>>724781365
Basically we used to have game devs. Now we have Dev Patels and it's just not the same and never will be.
>>
>>724777479
Mirror's Edge made the red look perfectly fine for the most part, I think. Probably because the levels were built specifically for parkouring to begin with, and they generally applied the red to things that it made sense for. A red door or a red crane isn't that weird to see, unlike yellow paint on random parts of a cliffside.

They're stopping to take out the enemies in an area before moving on, because moving on required climbing which would be impossible with the guards shooting at you, hence why taking them out was forced. Granted some of those sections have become skippable by speedrunners knowing more advanced tech but then you're still expecting the typical first time player who isn't going to know the layout well enough to know how to skip the fight to instead fight them.

The freerunning is just as good if not better than the first game thanks to the expanded moveset. The problem is that in pretty much every story level you'll have at least one forced combat section where you're locked in a room with some goons and can't progress until beating each one. I actually liked the combat in the first game (aside from the forced shooter section in the last level) because it was kinetic, you could take a few enemies down on your way and run past the rest or just disarm one of them and dispatch them all quickly which felt natural for Faith. The second game just makes you perform the same 3 hit combo over and over against 3 or 4 faceless guys with batons until the door behind them opens.
