Stop making me remember that Gamefreak used to be seen as competent in regards to visuals.

>>724725691Only on the Gameboy, hence why they continued to make games for the 1989 platform until 2002.
>>724725797It's just proof that the only people who like gen 2 started with it.
>>724725943>>724726350This. I'm glad normal people finally see the light. Those early zoomers are unfortunately doomed to suck gen ii's cock forever.

Not sure why, but Eternal Champions' visuals always stuck with me. It looks way better than almost every other Genesis game. The backgrounds are so detailed I would put them above SF2's backgrounds in terms of quality.

>>724724242For childhood there's a few but playing Ridge Racer for the first time, coming from SMK, blew my 6 year old mind. Also gave me a love of most arcade-style games, they're gameplay in its purest form.

>>724725606The night time in GSC looks so good because of the predefined color palette. As the game changes from Morning to Day to Night, it uses a completely different color palette for each of the three times. In nearly all games today, dynamic lighting and color filters are used instead. There very little hand-crafted detail when it comes to defining how an environment changes in certain lighting compared to the old 2D sprite games.

Hey You Pikachu was a terrible game, but I remember loving exploring the different areas with Pikachu as a kid. It was like having your dumb pet follow you around, but you still loved him anyway.
>>724732397It's just a different audience. Printing in a gaming magazine = your audience is nerdy guys and young boys. basically the same audience that frequents this board. How many times have you seen "__fags on suicide watch" here?whereas marketing today goes through whole commitees designed to make it as inoffensive as possible so it doesn't get automatically banned. You couldn't even reference su*c*de or someone being heckin unalived without the almighty algorithm sending your ad to the shadow realm.
>>724732397Magazine ads basically reached peak edge in the late 90s to mid 00s. Absolutely no fucks were given.

>>724732591yeah true. recently south park clips where cartman threatens his gf to kill himself if she dumps him resurfaced. it kinda sounds weird to make threats suicide, because it has become so taboo nowadays. and i understand it, bullying, mental heath, depression and shit like that appears all over the news, but still, people have changed a lot really fast. and im just 29, im not that fucking old goddamnitare people really cornflakes? has the culture changed that much? i dont know
>>724724551GSC had such good visuals. Very little visual bloat and absolutely beautiful colors
Pokemon Crystal was such a beautiful game.
>>724730730He's real but it's best to just ignore him, he'll obsessively stalk this thread now for the rest of the day.
>>724732665Stylistically it eye-catchingly stands out, the tongue-in-cheek innuendo is in small print that makes you focus in to read it. Back when marketers could still be creative and could use all the tools of manipulation available to them.
>>724732591
>>724733025Personally I think all culture is now filtered through the same narrow band of online platforms, and that's why our culture hasn't changed in like 15 years besides whatever the platforms demanded. It's too centralized to create anything new except when the platform owners bring the hammer down and manually change something.Like you mention how people changed, but really they're still watching and listening to and playing mostly the same shit from 15 years ago, just in a more advertiser friendly way.

>>724734928The colors on the left lack a certain depth and richness. It's more detailed sure, but there's a simplicity GSC manages to pull off, with the bold midnight blues and bright goldenrod yells that almost no other game of it's size at that time pulled off.Even the greens used in that image. Lufias is a very literal "green" the first choice you'd go to when making a grass color, Pokemon's is a slightly drab almost olive color there. It gives the world a more distinct characterization.
>>724734928More detail isn't always better, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Pokemon.

Monster Hunter Tri had a ton of them. Something about the slightly grainy filter that the Wii version had made everything have a sort of light-misty feeling that really made it feel like a fantasy world, which is strange cause I don't think of Monster Hunter as very "magical" in general. There's a part on the Deserted Island (I think area 7 or 10, don't remember) where you're inside a giant cave and there's a waterfall coming in from somewhere, and when you look up at the wall, there are windows and doors in a cliff face really high up, and it feels like someone lived there. Always wondered who.Weirdly, the Wii U version never hit the same. It was a little too clear and HD, which made everything look less mystical and more blocky, and those visuals just never hit the same.

the whole of this games starting zone is one of my most cherished childhood memories. weirdly some of the best voice acting in all of the ps2 era, including making moneybags a literal gypsy.

>>724733337I think culture might be trying to fix itself from the 2000s era. Back in the 90s and earlier, there wasn't a lot of ways to get news/information about things except from popular outlets, like TV, cable TV when it was available, newspapers, and magazines. If someone didn't fork out a commercial for it, you probably never even heard anything about it.Then in the 2000-2010s with the advent of the internet, tons and tons of niche subcultures started to pop up because now people interested in specific hobbies or who one time bought a weird game from the Wal Mart clearance bin could spend hours obsessively researching it and games like it or people who liked games like it on their little HTML home-grown webpages and different webforums, each with their own individual identity. Now in the 2020s era, everything is getting filtered again back into 3 sources of information: Twitter, Youtube, and TikTok. There are some niches still like in 4chan and reddit, but people are now syncing up their ability to consume from the same monolithic culture they used to. Except now it's easier to control and faster to push out new ideas.
>>724739748they would still buy it

A long time ago at an ice-skating rink I seen this arcade cabinet with a demo screen showing some gnarly looking twin headed dragon and guy with his back to the player flying around the screen. That'd be the only time I ever saw that game, but I made sure to commit what I saw to memory because I promised myself I'd play that game someday, somehow. Years later I'd discover Space Harrier was that game, and it's also one of my favorite games of all time.
