Flapping might be too overpowered for level design. But if you could at LEAST glide like batman, doing accelerated dives and turns, it would immediately be a 10/10 for me. They honestly didn't. Like, prior to Souls, action games where you could guarantee being able to press a button to dodge roll aren't something I'm sure even existed. Kingdom Hearts had a roll, but it was always an optional, build based thing you had to earn, and not something you had be default. Zelda had rolling, but that again could be broken by enemy attacks and didn't guarantee invincibility for a dozen+ frames.

Dark Souls in principle should have been a huge positive influence on the action genre, as it encouraged deliberate, punishing enemy design that you were forced to respect and couldn't mash through. But the games just kept doubling down on iframe slop mechanics being the main way to play the further they went on, Bloodborne being the tipping point that sent the series into the gutter.

Most action games beforehand were not at all committed to this style of "wait for enemy attack sequence that you've memorized the timing of, press the dodge button right when you get hit to guarantee you will phase through it, regardless of what actual dodge you did". Like, Souls wasn't even focused on this initially, but it quickly became the thing that it and games that copied it were dead set focused on.

Ninja Gaiden, in comparison, hardly encourages you to react to everything with dodges. A lot of stuff is just too fast for that to be what you want to do, so while it will do things like throw in unblockable attacks you do have to dodge, it doesn't at all follow what's come to be this 'Souls formula' of dodging.

I am not the anon who invoked kingdom hearts either. It is obvious that usage and the whole design of how dark souls builds its combat and dodge roll in particular was very novel at the time, MH did had something similar in a way sure but majority of action games at the time really didn't, neither original GoW nor Ninja Gaiden Black or DMC had it the way souls did.

Don't obsess over making something new, there's countless games that are called clones or reuse mechanics from some other game, that's how genres are created and how the medium evolves.
Before the FPS term was used, FPS games were just called DOOM clones, until enough DOOM clones got made that people called them FPS games. Before CoD got popular, it was called a Medal of Honor-killer but now the CoD-like FPS is it's own subgenre due to CoD's popularlity and nobody cares about MoH.
Today, there's many subgenres of FPS like: Arena Shooter (Quake, Unreal, TF2), CoD-like, Milsim, BR, Hero Shooter etc

Sonic was originally seen as a Mario clone, he was created because Yuji Naka played Mario 1 and liked how fast he could complete the levels so designed a Mario clone based on physics, speed, and paying attention to level design and setpieces to maintain your speed. Today, Sonic is his own subgenre of platformer with indies making "Sonic-likes".

The medium is always like this. Games used to be called (x)clone or (y)-killer but today they're called (z)-likes. When enough of these games are made, people define it as a genre.

The only thing that matters in your game is how you piece everything together as there's a diff between a '-like' game and a ripoff. See >>724740987
Only reason people are mean to that is a Spyro-like just needs to have: mini-sandbox levels of collecting items, each level has challenges for variety.
Flit however is copying: artstyle, moveset (does a bat play the same as a dragon?), physics. It's just a reskinned Spyro and it's not a spiritual successor as the last Spyro game wasn't that long ago even though it was a remake.

Ripoffs are copies, '-like' games take mechanics from past games and do something new with them like how Sonic is different from Mario.

this games demo is disappointing as fuck.
it's UE5 slop to start with and it's very much held back by the engine with horrible looking reflections and ghosting artifacts. it runs terrible for a simple stylized game and the combat feels very jank and weightless.

It's so odd the team say they're inspired by Ps2 games like KH2 and Ratchet and clank but don't have the observation and coding skills re-create the satisfying feel of the mechanics.
Something like smashing boxes in Ratchet and Clank for instance. They just can't do it.. they don't have what it takes.

It's demotivating that I can code well and pay attention to important polish details that all the great games have, but in the end that won't matter because 3D modeling is outside of my toolset, so low poly like n64 and ps1 games is all I can do. I love space exploration games and found Starflight amazing. Huge sector to explore with easily a thousand planets with terrain maps to travel with a ground vehicle, all in 720kb. Was great finding ruins which either had artifacts or lore leading to the next planet to explore.

Keep hoping to find an other game like it.
