Imagine having so many interesting IPs and companies and devs and ruining it. XBOX should be ashamed and Phil should be crucified.

Phil Spencer is just doing the exact job that he was hired to do, controlled demolition of the Xbox brand. The original version of the Xbox One was the entire point of Xbox existing in the first place. Once that totally failed at market Microsoft had zero interest in keeping it going long term.

you're right

Yeah, people forget that MS has always hated Xbox. They originally wanted the Xbox to be a neutered Windows PC, something more akin to an iMac than an actual console, and making it a game console was just their way of trying to capture an audience.

>Phil Spencer was named the new head of Microsoft Studios to replace Jason Holtman, who had only been its lead for the prior six months.[51][52][53] Spencer began looking for ways to expand Microsoft Studios
>began negotiations for the acquititions of Mojang, the developers behind Minecraft, in late 2014.[54] Microsoft spent US$2.5 billion
>Additional intellectual property (IP) acquisitions by Microsoft Studios in 2014 included a publishing contract with Undead Labs for their game State of Decay,[57] the rights to the Gears of War series from Epic Games,[58] and the Rise of IP (Rise of Nations and Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends) from Big Huge Games
> E3 2019, Xbox Game Studios announced it had acquired Double Fine,[78] and established a new internal studio dedicated to Age of Empires headed by Shannon Loftis, bringing their total studio count to fifteen
>Microsoft and ZeniMax Media announced on September 21, 2020, that Microsoft planned to acquire ZeniMax and its family of studios, which include Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane Studios, id Software, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, and ZeniMax Online Studios, for over US$7.5 billion in cash
>On January 18, 2022, Microsoft announced its intent to acquire Activision Blizzard in an all-cash deal valued at $68.7 billion
yep just a small quiet shutdown. just quietly opening more studios, spending a few small tens of billions of dollars. just quietly closing doors by opening them.

Are we going to pretend Perfect Dark looked good?

Who knows what was going on behind the scenes with Scalebound, Fable, and Perfect Dark.

What are you talking about with NG? 4 Just came out and did well on Steamcharts.

Hi-Fi rush was fine, but was not going to pay the bills.

Ninja Gaiden was pretty much an XBOX IP for a while but they fucked it up.

The studio and publisher buying spree was explicitly to allow them to scuttle the core of Xbox itself while still giving Microsoft a presence in video games to keep the investors off their back. Within the next five years don't be surprised if basically every first party Xbox studio is gone beyond Activision and Bethesda/ZeniMax, who effectively operate with zero hands on management from Xbox/Microsoft themselves.

I lost my ps5 earlier this year and decided now was the time to jump into the best GamePass console experience with the Series X (not needing to buy games at msrp was appealing but I was 7 years late to the party). I was pretty much playing free games and whatever was in the plus catalog so there’s no real library locking me to either system and now I’m getting burned on the hardware/sub price increase.

It was great from July to well recently and quick resume is great but now I’m trying to sell the X to jump back into a PS5 marginally more expensive than my Fortnite Black Friday bundle at $350 last year. The Steam Deck is appealing as a reason to create a Steam account finally but I generally hate handhelds and only played my Switch docked. No interest in a desktop, use my phone for pretty much everything but gaming I just want a simple box to turn on and play games so really hopeful Freemont materializes into a better Steam Machine as that would suit my needs perfectly. If only the Deck had the power to output to a large TV and not look awful.
