It really dawned on me this year that the internet I grew up with is dead. It's like an alien landscape now.
I wish I had gotten into more forums when I was a kid. I got into NSider -- the official Nintendo forums -- around 2004/2005 and that was fun. I joined some dude-from-NSider's HTML website game plus chatroom for a couple years until I fell out of contact with them and the website was gone and I never found out where they went. I fucked with a wrestling forum in middle school but that was only because of a real life friend at the time. OH I used to check this book website out for theorycrafting for a couple weeks around every new book release about once a year from 2002-2010.

That's where most people are gonna go, because they have people they know that they can talk to about whaever autistic shit they want, and if there's a schizo spammer they can easily be dealt with....Or maybe they'll just drop the whole imageboard posting thing altogether and do some other hobby that's more fulfilling. >>724762237Big bang was a good patch outside of the map changes, especially if you were a noob or a shit class like page. Made the worst of 1st and 2nd job classes very playable, buffed a lot of bad 3rd jobs, removed the FMA magestory leech meta, getting well into 4th job became realistic if you were the average dedicated player that couldn't nolife every day for months on end. It was pretty nice, literally opened up content and areas that were forever inaccessible to like 80% of the population and they could reach it at a reasonable pace. The pre-bb exp curve was horrible. The beginning of the game being dumbed down was when they started adding legend/resistance classes like demon slayer, wild hunter, mercedes and mechanic, all these classes that straight up ignore platforming, then the future adventurer revamps that made them more like the newer classes, then at some point it got out of control and the game started becoming unrecognizable. I'd say probably around the time kaiser or luminous released was when I realized they were full steam ahead on retarded powercreep classes and revamps. The beginning of the game becoming truly absurd with power scaling imo was with the pre-bb dual blade/potential patch and when they increased the dmg cap from 200k to 1mil and you saw these people literally crossing one damage cap threshold to the next instantly in one patch because they were already that strong before when potential was still new. Unironically destroyed the bossing economy. There's an ideal version of maple out there for me and it's explorer only early big bang without potential but it'll never exist.

I liked early bb convenience too much to suffer classic maple again. Plus I just know if they do end up adding 4th job it's gonna devolve into the very magestory meta I hate so much and everything becomes pointless then. >>724762805>Big bang was a good patch outside of the map changesThat is true, I was extremely hyped for it, and the changes at the time weren't that drastic, it was just the classic maps they completely ruined. What I meant was that was the point where things were really going to change going forward.>The beginning of the game being dumbed down was when they started adding legend/resistance classes like demon slayer, wild hunter, mercedes and mechanic, all these classes that straight up ignore platformingThat's what I mean by dumbed down, classes became too streamlined. Everyone started to have some powerful, mult-hit attack that would hit multiple enemies, and some ultimate that hits everything on screen. Classes used to feel so unique with their strengths and weaknesses, the gameplay felt more methodical. Platforming mattered like you said. Warriors were slow but solid at 1v1 and can mob from the beginning, and I thought final attack's flashy follow up attack was the coolest thing ever, bowman were pretty strong ranged characters but were screwed at point blank, mages had teleport which was a game changer, thieves could jump around and shoot projectiles, and savage blow hitting 6 times was so cool at the time.

>>724763687I miss old maple's modest approach to class design so much. I think I like early big bang so much and give it an exception because the explorer classes around that time still felt very very faithful towards the original philosophy of the game even as late as like the chaos patch, pirates included. The changes towards bucc for example actually made it feel like a playable class through all job advancements, the first iteration of it was so bad because it was so sluggish and clunky and BB made it into a real class. They intend for it to be Classic+, the OSRS approach, with the upcoming closed beta testing being used to gather feedback on what players will want to see in the game going forward. We are getting brand new Classic-exclusive content (whether it remains exclusive is to be seen) and modifying what didn't work in the old game. They even indirectly confirmed HP washing, one of the most cancerous practices in the old days, is dead and gone.It really does sound like they know what they're doing and there's hope for Classic to be fun and successful. Nerds, answer me this. Would some old 1999 PC someone has laying around possibly have cached websites from around the time? Like, does the full HTML store in temp or something? Just curious, as if one day we'll start uncovering what the old sites looked like.

I think the problem is that when people came here in the past there were still a ton of fun places to find all the time online and explore, today there seems to be very little of that. (Maybe I’m just not in the loop) So people partially come here because there is nowhere else to seemingly go.we’ve all seen the infographic of the consolidation of the internet shrinking down year by year from hundreds of popular website into basically just a handful. if I knew other places to go I’m sure I and myself would look around. Who knows what will happen. it seems like people are starting to catch on that social media is shit and bad for you, so maybe in another few years the internet will change again somewhat resembling what we had before to some small degree.

Now I only use it on my PC because my provider is blocked almost universally for some reason. My phone never gets past the 120 second timer, it just loops. Back around the start of the 2000's, I got into piracy and I was stuck on 56k dial up so torrents were not a possibility. As such, I got into Direct Connect hubs. For those that never used them, it was like an IRC chatroom, but you could search through whatever anyone had specifically shared on their PC, or browse individual user's shared files, and download directly from them. Got into one called Anime Nation, about mid-sized and pretty chill. Got to know the regulars, became one myself, played a fuck ton of videogames with them. We all hopped on R.O.S.E. Online the day it launched, had fun exploring a new MMORPG together. Playing Brood War with two others against 5 AI, playing co-op System Shock 2 over Hamachi, and customized Freelancer on some private server, where the physics were tweaked to be more realistic to make shutting off your engines and flipping around then hitting afterburners in a slingshot maneuver a very useful tactic. I first got linked to 4chan around 2004 in the AN Direct Connect hub, right about the time the Jax the Bat(copyright Jax the Bat) hack was in full swing. The hub was still going strong when I left for a while due to a lack of internet access out in the sticks. Came back about 2-3 years later, and it went from 300-400 people down to about 15, and only 2 of them were the old regulars. I asked what the hell happened, and they just said everyone moved on to torrents and went off to college/got married, etc. I managed to locate about half a dozen of the old crew on Steam, but haven't managed to play another game with any of them. Torrents are great and everything, but I really miss the community I used to have with Direct Connect.

The shutdown made it clear to me that if this site ever dies for real, there will be no replacement. Which is a fucking insane thing to think about. For as much as I shitpost about 4chan, it is actually anonymous. You can very easily post your opinion while being amidst a mass so large that you leave basically no trace of yourself. That's fucking nice.
>>724755852celebrate
>>724804617It’s a great website to discuss things because for the most part tou don’t have to worry about someone watering down their opinion. So sometimes I learn more here than I do anywhere else. (Yeah some retards on here know a lot more than you do) it’s very valuable if you can approach it with an open but discerning mind to also sort through the shitposts. I would also rather be wrong here and learn something anonymously than somewhere else like Reddit or social media where you have a persistent account. in that sense if you approach this place with a healthy mindset you can grow a lot which I’m sure sounds very counterintuitive to most here.
The biggest reason I deleted all my socials is because I don't want my past constantly being brought up. I don't need to be reminded of all this shit from years ago, past failed relationships, all those horrid friends, mistakes I made. I don't want to stalk people I will never see again, will never connect with again, people I will never forgive or will never forgive me, and specially the people who have wronged me and will live their lives never receiving the justice I want and deserve. The same goes for online forums. I do not want to care about them because I know they are no longer worth anything and those times are now long gone.
>>724805103It's a low level horrifying thing to realize that, speaking as someone who was already in high school by the time social media got off the ground, that mine is the last generation to not have their entire life, essentially, recorded and stored in a publicly accessible database. Every embarrassing thing modern kids do is recorded and preserved for everyone to gawk at. No wonder everyone's such a boring asshole - they're playing it safe since the moment they step out of line, literally the entire world will know. The Stasi only wished they could create a surveillance network as efficient as this.
>>724805103You could perhaps make the argument that social media alters our lives in a multitude of ways which lead to an unnatural life course at odds with the conditions that humans evolved to function within. That is the simplest way I can word that premise or thesis but I’m sure many have expanded on and explained it in great detail.I used to be heavily into it with a ton of friends but the juice simply isn’t worth the squeeze especially with the shifting social media landscape after the 2016 election which put any preexisting issues into hyperdrive. I’m happy to hear that more and more younger people are forgoing or ignoring social media entirely. Probably better for them.

>>724806820I mean if we are lucky, they will realize that it's their predecessor generations that figured out they should just monetize the fuck out of the younger generations growing up, and the upcoming generations would not repeat the same mistake. But on the other hand, you could make a LOT of money by taking advantage of children.

It was always the kind of group that was into TRPGs and games a bit too much, but it's incredibly fucking grim to see your closest friends wallow in misery. One thing I did notice in my early 20s was how many people my age were completely helpless when it came to doing any kind basic tasks that adults had to do. People in their 20s were still having their parents do their taxes and doing all the paperwork for university.
>>724755594when 4chan died for a few weeks, i legit didnt know what to do on internet aside from a quick hentai fap on ehentai or something.
>>724806198Yeah it’s a little weird. My ex I was with last year knew me before I deleted my socials so it was hard to connect with them and start dating etc. but meeting people today is harder without some form of social media. I remember some girl acting like it was weird I didn’t have instagram but I didn’t care. Just thought it was alarming that’s how things are now for people. But lots of women are weird about stuff like that. I remember even when I did have social media, meeting this girl at s convention and her asking for my instagram, and when j said I didn’t have one ( I didn’t) they got really rude probably assuming I didn’t want to give it to them. People are just brainrotted by the internet.I have had sex with like 20 something people and I still feel like it’s normal where if you meet someone in person you can simply exchange numbers. But that isnt how a lot of people think now. I may make a new social media account at some point but try to make it something more simple without a surplus of my life on it because I think (as I said before) more and more people are realizing it isnt healthy or really something that feels good.I basically only users MySpace and then Facebook. I could get like 100 likes on my FB images so I know what it’s like to get female attention and all of that shit and I probably would have gotten a lot more on other platforms but the only reason I’m mentioning that is even when I was benefitting from social media getting dates or sex, it never really felt good. Sort of like you are advertising yourselfasA a product versus simply living your life.I have never used a dating app and most likely never will. I hear it’s even worse out there for guys. I have just been mostly living in monk mode the last few years off and on and while at times it can be lonely I think it’s peaceful and less stressful as well.

>>724807737That’s funny as hell bro did that really happen? I always thought that was some meme mostly blown out of proportion. Idk man maybe that’s good for people to weed themselves out like that- If someone is gonna tweak out over something as minuscule as that what else are they going to get booty blasted over when you date them or good forks get married? Fuck that
>Browse saved art from over the decades>Completely unsourcable now
>>724755594as the internet gets worse, the more men turn to trooning outits not a coincidenceif the internet was still good, men wouldnt feel this void within themselves that they feel they now need to fill with estrogen
>>724807516I don't even know how to even ask anyone for contact info anymore. My 2 new friends told me that directly asking people for socials is wrong and that I should literally make business cards and give it to people because directly asking is to much pressure. Mind you I am 34 so not only do I think the real issue is that I am old, but even if it is true that sounds gay as hell and frankly doesn't seem like it's worth the effort.
>>724755594On the one hand, a lot of old memories were wiped clean when the site vanished into the aether. On the other hand, the gay fanfiction of me and another of the users of the website is gone. Which is worth it.
boomer here, wtf is sharty?
>>724808554Idk if this is a shitpost or not but lots of people get married in their early 20s and get divorced in their 30s or 40s so people better start getting their shit together being able to communicate and form new connections because if you’re too old in your 30s, the rest of society is going to fall apart fast. If I have a good conversation with someone I will just ask if they want to hang out or something sometime and I’ll give them my number. Depends on the situation of course. However it’s good to probably have some other airgapped thing like a social media or messaging app for people you don’t know enough yet to give them your number. If you give it out to everyone then you just end up getting a bunch of spam eventually. That’s another one of those technology issues.

>remember nsider>go to archive.org for my profile>still remember my ID number from 2004I'm amazed there are still sites dating back to nearly 30 years ago that are still alive being apart of the original internet. I don't know whether IP4 is coming or it's IP5. nowadays forums are overrun by trannies or furries for the most part and are always one sided on politics and you get a ban if you don't follow their policy I have screencaps from my days being on Nsider. speaking of Nsider, remember camp hyrule? i remember being in those cabins and winning three times in a row with everyone. I liked 2004 the most. It's kind of sad when rereading your past posts or chat logs (I had chat logs from 2 decades ago before i lost them in a computer wipeout) and I remember most of the users there. sometimes i wonder what became of them despite the fact I know someone died of a heatstroke or drowned in an accident. i can really tell how my posting changed over the decades. I think GameFAQs is the oldest I know second to Chrono Compendium, and Serebii. Never forget those days that made your character. I remember having a photobucket account and still getting emails, but i decided to take everything from there and save it on a legacy folder. I wonder what old screencaps i had before my other laptop died back in 2012. I'm surprised the one i'm using right now has reached 9 years almost. anyways, it's great to see 4chan still exist whereas everywhere else is being filtered by degenerative people who destroyed the internet for us all. I'm 36 now. It's incredible how two decades ago people weren't obsessed with social media and now it's making humans regress.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dxiTuPy9dQ
people were so juvenile and friendly back then. now you have third worlders access to the net and trash the place. mobile phones made it worse.
>>724770127the captchas really killed the site for me, i get why it's necessary with the schizoposters, degenerates, and shills but it's just that things can never go back to what it used to be before
>>724810937ease of access to the internet is ultimately what killed it
>>724755852Right wingers and culture wars fags will starve overnight if it happens, kekThey won't have posts and narratives to farm from.Honestly sounds like a good thing, but I doubt they would shutdown the biggest honeypot online.
>>724810937ah, but by the same token, you have those who have been stewing in their own miserable puddles for decades. for example, witness those who will proudly tell you they have been on this website for x years and, well, their brains have been scooped out and replaced with basedjacks. etc.

>>724810994god remember dial up and getting pop up viruses? or those apple computers in school having translucent colors behind the monitor? jesus i remember almost every upgrade as the years went by. i think obama was to blame for opening the net to third worlders like SEA. then politics came and you have members of congress taking over social media. i actually think politicians should be barred from using social media.

>>724793834i think /pol/ has been dictating the site for a while and thats what its indicative of. the era is changing.
>>724798934highly unlikelyI started browsing this shithole in 2008 people who started browsing here before 2012 are like 5% of posters max and that's probably generous, traffic tripled from 2010 to 2017 or so and that's not accounting for people quitting the site for a million reasonsimo the site got too bitter, schizo, and shitposty for its own good. I've always had the most fun in more genuine discussion threads but they make up an ever smaller amount of posts on most boards.hell /pol/ is a fucking wasteland even compared to 2018, let alone 2012, to not even bring up /b/ which is now just random porn threads./v/ ironically enough has fared better and that's even with so many new splinter boards sucking up content
>>724811305wish i knew. probably something about this website prioritising """"engagement""" while having no idea at all what this website is for. learning absolutely nothing at all or doing anything at all different since the hack earlier in the year. does hiro even remember he owns the place. etc
I swear something will replace Discord someday for the better or worse. I know Reddit was Digg back in the 00s and Twitter wasn't invaded by third worlders or trannies with one sided politics. I remember looking on Tumblr for porn before it was banned. Then 2012 came. Good thing I had you since 2009 /v/. Even if those days can't return we drill a path for those who left us behind.

>>724775498I'm baffled that nobody's made a software that can emulate them properly yet, or even a knockoff that has the same functionality. It was fucking massive and the age demographic of those who miss it is probably the most tech-savvy on average.
>zoomies, alpha's, and beta's (and future gens) will never know what the old days of the net were like.>nerds or geeks dont exist anymore, but evolved into furfags or trannies.>to make it worse with online meetups, controversial groomings or allegations will leak.
>>724811305This has been covered before if you browse enough nostalgia threads, once people became aware how memes and OC in general can be converted into clicks and patreon money the drive for community contribution became superseded by individual gain, alternatively those who would otherwise still do so freely found their work being reuploaded elsewhere and that dissuaded them. So, to reiterate the crux of most changes and issues with the internet can be found stemming from the bloat of browsers through simplified phone access along with Social Media sites converting them into influence and ad revenue. "It's popular, now it sucks" turned out to be right.

>>724812691>jeets and AI posters....the horrorThere's already retards posting AI search summaries as if they're authoritative sources. If you go to any flag boards there's Jeets everywhere. That's just actual jeet flags too, not even all the jeet diaspora.
>>724812352I didn't say it would be goodjust that someone would inevitably try to revive the core concept
>>724810994I’ve heard people speculate on making some kind of new internet. I don’t know what the would entail but the thought behind it was starting over from scratch and it not becoming corporate and it being somewhat gatekept
>>724810730The mid 2000s were probably a twilight era, 2001 and 2002 was great 2003 was great, but the internet seemed like it was really kicking off as tou said around that 2004 era. And from 2004 to 2005 and 2006 things were really really fucking good. Probably sometime around 2007 people say things started to change but frankly I didn’t notice it and I felt like things were great online and more or less the same until 2010. For me the cut off is somewhere after 2012 that’s when things online and offline went to shit. I like going to the old Star Wars rebelscum website and looking at old toys and stuff and reading old forum posts to relive being a teen in the early 2000s and the cultural craze of the prequel trilogy coming out and how excited everyone was.
