Venom didn't even do anything that mattered for the story of the series. All you do in V is fly back and forth between Africa, Afghanistan, and your base to pick up POWs who contribute nothing. Meanwhile Kaz and Ocelot are having the plot happen to them off-screen

This is part of the reason why Big Boss ended up overshadowing Solid Snake in a franchise literally named after Solid. Big Boss kept getting new games while Solid was for the most part ignored.

He is the most human, he mourns his comrades and he does his best as a weird step-dad for liquid. cool metal arm. He likes 80s cassette tapes. I like that he is a delusional brain-damaged brainwashed unreliable narrator playable character. Makes the events of the game more open to interpretation. I like quiet protags that don't really know whats going on(Naked and Solid had no idea what was really going on 99% of the time either, theyre ALL pawns/soldiers being used) He is cool like how every snake is cool.
