Did you know for one of their games Microsoft kept firing people and only had temporary workers or whatever working on it? Did you know that working for companies like Rockstar is so shit nobody wants to work there which is why all the star talent left?
The reason why companies like Nintendo succeeded generation after generation and why they're now market leader is because it's actually a great place to work so generally people stay and they attract the best talent.
So no, I seriously doubt any company will compete with Nintendo any time soon because making vidya is incredibly expensive and it requires the company to actually take care of their workers, West generally doesn't.

Yeah and this gives you a pretty good idea why these massive AAA games are such a mess. Games like that can take more than 6 years to develop and most of these huge companies can’t retain their talent for that long or just fire them due to greed. I can only see Nintendo making AAA games that work at launch. Hell, even the current AAA games from other companies have problems at launch. It’s not the lack of talent, it purely incompetence from project managers and publishers.

The reality is that management has its thumb up its ass and isn't actually coordinating anything towards a completed product, the vast majority of the content that ends up going into an open world game is hastily constructed, last minute filler, unrefined first drafts and whatever feature creep didn't get cut out.

They succeed (or at the very least fail differently) due to Japanese work culture and protections that prevent them from just firing people to look good on quarterly reports, which puts them a step above most western companies if their board isn't comprised of senile gambling addicts.

It's actually cheaper than ever, most companies just routinely toss out at least 50% if not more of their labor on office politics. Tools are stronger than ever and free, knowledge is widely available alongside well documented best practices, fully functional engines with simplified workflows are publicly available and everything can be sold online without even the minor cost of optical media.

Compared to needing to buy software and hardware for tens of thousands of dollars to even get started, needing to figure out something like 3D game design from first principles, needing to design everything for specific hardware architecture that no one has experience with, needing to have connections to someone involved with supercomputers to get access to math equations that can make your game run at all, needing to code everything from scratch and needing to make extensive publishing deals for your game to see the light of day outside of your home country?
Yeah probably.
Sure, if they want to waste money on shit, then they can really waste money on shit, but making a game is super cheap comparatively.
