Why are corporations so aggressive against Fan games yet allow other fan content to be made? It makes a little more sense when a game maker like Nintendo is taking them down, but why do companies like Hasbro do it when they gave up on producing games forever ago?

I always hear people say it's about protecting their trademark, but why isn't that the case in japan, where fan made content is perfectly fine to sell at places like comiket
surely a fan in the us making a fan game and putting it out into the world for free isn't a threat to a massive corporation's intellectual property. it's a bit more understandable if we're talking about selling the games, though

It's copyright law bullshit. If they don't protect their trademark, they lose exclusive rights to their IP. Not sure about nip law.

Mlp hasn't been mainstream for a decade , and everyone that was obsessed with it went to greener more degenerate pastures , plus I think it got a fighting game or something recently , you should be happy that it wasn't abandoned at all after half the heinous shit you guys did over 10 years ago

Its more of an obligation legally than anything else.

Say if nintendo allows one fan creator to make a mario fan game. If they don't take legal action, it could potentially set a legal precedent for a larger indie team to make their own mario fangame.

This has a snowball effect where eventually it even looks like Sony could make a mario game and nintendo would struggle to legally stop them

I've also heard that if a copyright holder isn't actively going after infringement it can be used as a defense to get a copyright infringement case dismissed.

Companies on Hasbro rely entirely on physical goods that require them to eat a lot of the manufacturing cost. They don't want a TFS situation where some teens make a fan-based parody that eventually leads to those teens having their own line of 100% legal merchandise. Games Workshop did the same thing with Warhammer fan content, of course they took it even further by going after shit like miniature paints and other third-party accessories because fuck you if you don't want to use something that's officially licensed.
