Game graphics evolved rapidly in the 80s and 90s because of innovations in transistor technology which allowed them to be manufactured smaller and more efficiently, resulting in more data and heat dissipation across a PCB. As this technology plateaued, so did video game graphics as it became harder and harder to manage overheating in components. Which is why all modern gaming PCs and consoles are filled with fans and sound like jet engines.
