Even if the combat is like Guy Savage Delta it doesn't have to be a strictly linear mission based game like Bayo/NG/DMC. Nier Automata already showed them playing around with the structure a bit with a OoT inspired map

I liked how combat and encounters were handled in the 64 games even if I don't think the games themselves are so hot. I'd rather a stationary primary attack that encourages positioning than devil may run up on a nigga gameplay to any capacity, but I know that's a pipe dream.

With character action you at least have the option to use different weapons/characters/moves. Soulslikes are largely limited to your build, and even then all the different weapons tend to fufill similar functions. The most variety you can get is playing a ranged build, and you can tell the AI generally isn't designed around that. Poise and blocking has increasingly been neglected too in favor of just dodging. Basically Soulslikes are increasingly becoming bad character action games.

That's because you don't understand Souls games. Each weapon has its timings and stun and status power, and each affects the enemy. Whereas character action games have enemies that switch in binary states between being punching bags and tanks, the kind of attacks you get to use for each weapon in Souls games is actually different

They should do a 3DCV game that fully incorporates real whip physics and lets you control every angle, crack, wind-up and hangtime. Instead it will obviously just be the same canned animations and static hitboxes as every other game with a pretend whip that just functions like a longer sword.

The thing is, "gameplay style" has never been a problem for 3D CV except maybe LoS for being shamelessly derivative to an even greater extent than the others. And even that was still an alright game. The problem has always been level design/progression sucking. LoI with more dynamism in its environments, without so many empty hallways presumably masking load time for the adjacent areas, maybe a genuinely interconnected world instead of its faux-Megaman thing, could've been a beloved classic instead of how divisive it is today. There's always talk like they need to go back to the drawing board for even the basic elements when all of them really got at least that much right in their own ways.
