I thought about why hitting someone with a weapon in a Souls games feels so much better than hitting someone with a weapon in Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry, and I know now that in Fromsoft games they add a certain amount of weight when hitting an enemy that just adds so much satisfaction. Whether it's timing an attack so an enemy is stunned by the full force of a charged heavy or parry an enemy and riposte for massive damage, it's moments like these that make Ninja Gaiden feel like a button masher in comparison. Yeah we get it, Ryu is light as a feather and fast as a bullet but trudging along in heavy clangy armor and swinging around colossal weapons is just more fun.

I'm under the impression that the Ninja Gaiden series has only gotten big because older gamers though beating it was hardcore instead of just poorly designed and that reputation stuck despite very obvious signs the game was in fact poorly designed. It's basically an arcade game that never left the arcade mindset and suffers for it.I think Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1 are good games because they were designed with a more methodical combat system than the NG games and while I'm not a huge fan of the later games, I can see why the Souls games prospered while Ninja Gaiden failed.
