Assuming they had a similar technological and societal path as us, the natural assumption would be that this is an alien empire that came out victorious over all it's enemies, and now has a mass of wartime technology that has been used, counteracted, improved and perfected well and truly beyond what humanity has achieved. one of the trope I love the most is using what drives a human (ambition, power, wanderlust) and using that as a funnel about why an alien civilization light find us interesting or dangerous.Now, of course, that trope can be completly destroyed with the "le human is bad" shit, but if written right you have can create a compelling story where both empire can understand theses goals or difference and either work toward unity or use them as a mean for war as why we're ultimately incompatible.
