The golem is great. People just had unrealistic expectations. They expected to just be able to drop the golem in their gigantic storage rooms and he's instantly sort everything.

You need to think of the golem as another redstone tool. It is not magic, it won't do everything for you, you need to guide the tool and optimize around it.

Let me write a guide.
>when empty handed, the golem will search for the nearest copper chest until it finds one with items inside
>it will remember visited copper chests up to 10, after the 10th his memory is wiped, he wanders a few blocks and restarts the search
>when he finds a copper chest with items, he starts visiting the nearest normal chests

Now please pay attention, this is what most people get wrong:
>if the golem finds EITHER an empty chest OR a chest with the same type of item, it will deposit the held item
>this means if he comes across an empty chest BEFORE he finds the "right chest", he will dump the item there, meaning you can't have empty chests before the intended chests
>if the chest does not fit that criteria, he will search for another, keeping a memory of up to 10 chests
>after searching 10 chests he loses memory, wanders and restarts the search

This is how he works in a nutshell.

Almost hitting character limit. Next post I will explain how to make him work.

Here is a very basic way of making him work well:

>divide your storage room in isolated sections composed of 1 copper chest + 10 chests (I recommend using fences or glass walls for the division)
>make the 10th chest empty, and connect it to a hopper that feeds its items to a copper chest in the next division of your storage room

And presto, you have just chain linked your golems. The idea is that the golem from the 1st division will attempt to sort the items in the first 9 chests. If it can't find any suitable chest, this means the item you deposited does not belong on that division. The golem will deposit it in the 10th chest, which is always empty because it is constantly pouring its contents into a hopper that will place it in the copper chest of the next division's golem.

The next division will repeat that process: it attempts to sort the items in its own 9 chests, and if it can't do that, it deposits the items in the 10th empty chest and it becomes a problem of the next division.

At the end of that entire chain you can make sure the last empty chest feeds a hopper that outputs into a normal chest, so from time to time you can take a look at that chest and see what items you still don't have in your storage.

Yes, redstone sorting is still the most efficient and reliable way of sorting items.

But it is complex and unintuitive, requiring several hours of research. Like, you can't just intuit redstone mechanics and build it yourself without looking it up.

It is also very expensive in materials, very bulky (can't find smaller bases), and because of the complexity it is a pain in the ass to build it for smaller projects. It is also very resource intensive for servers.

Copper golems are for a more casual sorting system. They are intuitive, you don't have to think too hard to use them, just remember the 10 chests memory rule. You can also easily plop one anywhere. Just built a mob farm and want to sort the items without looking up hopper sorter autism? Just plop a golem and presto, your sorting system is ready in 10 seconds.

yeah im sure he has his uses, doesnt really work for me though, the thing with inventory management in minecraft is that before you even think to install a copper golem youve been dealing with complete garbage being funneled into your inventory, because for some reason after so many years they never thought to make picking up items a thing you toggle rather than just being on always forever, so you kinda just learn how to sort your items by default.

hes cute though! im glad they were able to do more with him than the allay or armadillo where theyre incredibly difficult to find and when you do find them they have literally no use unless if you build complicated farms, or *are* easy to find but have literally no impact on gameplay whatsoever,
not only is coppy a lot more easy to understand in what he does, hes pretty easy to create and reproduce, even if you dont find a use for him you can still always just use the statues as fun decoration. definitely one of the best "mob vote" additions i'd say (technically not a mob vote, but the community basically wrangled mojang into considering it, so its like an unofficial vote lol)

up there with the phantom. yes, you heard me, i love the phantom. its a fun enemy, easy to counterattack, wish he showed up MORE...

if you have a stack of items headed for the second division it would take him two whole minutes to move 1 stack

You can make this faster by having more golems. They are pretty much inexpensive. I like to keep 4 in each division. Nothing stops you from having 20, but I value aesthetic over functionality.

If you are REALLY autistic you can do pic related: 9 chests, 20 golems in a minecart, and an empty chest behind them. This is even faster than redstone sorting.

I'm just gonna install a storage mod lol
>>
>Bloat the game by adding 100s of items that have little to no use in game that you're picking up constantly
>Create a solution for the problem
>it sucks
lol. just get rid of all the bloat, no one cares about leaves, weeds, the random plants, nor the 20 different types of dirt and cobblestone that just serve to fill up your inventory space
>>
>>724867310
No, the golems are not a solution for item bloat. You are the one overcomplicating this. Sorting these items into the correct chests is only needed for those interested in keeping these items which is clearly not your case. If you don't want to keep them for later, just drop the items, it's a non-problem for you.
