With how scummy publishers are, I genuinely wonder why this system wasn't widely adapted in more games.
What stopped them from adding a subscription system to access online features in other big titles like COD, Fifa, fortnite overwatch, Counterstrike or siege?
People paid to play wow and they still do, why were they so complacent with this system?

No they dont. You can farm gold for a 1 month sub in like two days with ease.
>>

No, you're wrong, the prices for it are high and they force you to spend the entirety of your month grinding gold just to be able to purchase next month's subscription. You have little to no time for anything else

i sell m+ runs for like 1-3 weeks and have enough money to buy tokens the entire year

You paid a subscription to get those, you physically don't have time to farm gold without getting at least a subscription
>>
>>724864741
Because WoW can barely justify the sub cost for itself these days
also you've been asleep for 20 years if you haven't seen the "WoW Killer" landfill

Outside of boosting or being a loser and playing the AH all day with addons, that's not true.
It takes time or connections to setup and time = money.

i paid a subscription to start playing in tbc, wrath, cata, stopped playing, came back to bfa to play with friends and since then we've been selling m+ runs, havent paid with real money since then

In the case of FIFA, it would be a terrible idea, since their game functions as a store selling digital items. A paywall would only hinder people's access to the items they want to sell.
Note that FIFA's biggest rival, Pro Evolution Soccer, doesn't even charge more for the game. Konami realized that the price of the game itself was already acting as an agent that disrupted the sale of items, and the guys started literally giving the game away for free to bring more potential consumers.

In other words, many of these games do not charge a monthly fee for the same reasons that Steam does not charge you a monthly fee to continue using their store.

You're thinking in today's terms were we're accustomed to not paying a subscription.
I'm asking why this system wasn't introduced long ago when people wouldn't protest against it.
Had it been introduced in 2000's you'd be okay with paying a subscription for fifa
>>
>>724864741
Because if every game has a subscription then the playerbase will be stretched too thin, and no one will have enough players to justify it.
>>
>>724866213
Okay, not every game, but how about the big titles like I said?
Cod/ warzone, fortnite, CS and all the others?
>>

Subscription models used to be more common. They fell off because games started to make more money on microtransactions and they didn't want to get rid of potential suckers who would be filtered by a sub
>>
>>724866332
They kinda do already, battle passes are a sort of subscription fee. It's the better of both worlds for them even.
They get positive PR and high player count that comes from being F2P, while also getting the revenue of a subscription from the people that were already willing to pay.

When consoles are charging for online, the games themselves can't. Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox requires you to pay a sub fee AND to pay for Xbox live and no one plays it on there other than maybe the free trial, you'd save money over time if you bought a used ps4 to play it on instead.

Also in general, you need poorfags for the paypigs to bully and make the game seem alive. If you include a sub fee, you lose the f2ps and they'll go to a different game instead and then that becomes popular so your paypigs leave because your game is no longer the one everyone is playing.

A team of 20 jews probably did the math and found out they'd get a 4.1% lower chance of line going up or whatever.

CoD was literally made free2play to attract more third wordlers that will just buy cosmetics
Same with CS and Fortnite really, WoW nowadays only has subscribtion because "why not", and blizzdrones are retarded enough to pay for it.
>>
>>724868520
a lot of wow players don't actually pay for their own sub, some whale buys some other players gold in game via the wow token system and pays their sub for them. the whale pays $20, the guy gets a $15 sub, and blizzard pockets the extra $5.
>>
WoW probably would have made even more money going f2p, but they've just always been very slow to adapt because they're terrified of killing what's already a golden goose. For a very long time the game has succeeded almost entirely on inertia, and they know they don't have the talent or luck to ever make something like it happen again. It's just too late to take big gambles on completely redoing its business model. They'd rather slowly ride it to the grave than to make changes that could crash the gravy train sooner. The time to make bank going f2p was back when the broad market was still interested in it, rather than today when only the most severely addicted remain.
>>
The sub fee is still around because it's been like that for 20+ years and why would they change it?

you're working for less than minimum wage and you don't even realize it
