I have no idea what spell school to focus ny mage on? Will I have enough skill points so I can focus on multiple? Or do I have to specialize? I'm playing M&M6 for the first time.

Air, obviously.

At some point you're going to want pretty much all magic schools for at least one spell.

You'll have enough skill points for at least a couple of grandmaster skills per character, so focus on whatever you like

Water nigguhs where you at?

Air for damaging point-blank sparks and fly, and water for teleportation spells.

you can do Master Air with just 4 points
Expert (4) in Water is good enough for travel utility spells, but proper enchanting needs Master (10)
besides that 1 person with Light and 1 with Dark as high as possible for party-wide multibuffs (that obsolete individual buffs )

no grandmasters in MM6

Everything but Earth has its use.

Water for teleporting between dungeon and temple and/or 3do office using lloyd beacon and between cities
