This has definitely happened not only once, but enough times to justify the existence of this thread.
>>724879964>>Japanese audio>>"Take this!"Why are they speaking English?
How do I go about moving to Japan ? I am a SWE major but I'm willing to teach english or something.
>>724880235it sounds cooler
>>724879964Depends on what the original japanese is. Some heavy hitting jap phrase can be rendered as "take this" but that loses the meaning.
>>724879964>More emotion and intensity for a conflict>erm bad????? English is the better language
>>724880413For exampleYou might see まったくそのとおりだ and the official english was>That, I can't denyBut when you look at the MC's face afterwords it's a lot more like>You're damn rightThere's an element of "Let's fucking go" here. That you lose if you read it just as "I completely agree"
>Japanese audio>"YURUSENAI!!">English text>"I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU"
>>724880521English and Russian are the best languages for novels because of the huge vocabularies and endless expressions, sayings, aphorisms etc.
>>724879964>kore demo kurae>Spread that boy pussy and get ready to get herpesWhy are they like this?
>>724880521>More emotion and intensity for a conflict>erm bad????? Yeah. Like imagine the context is a friendly competition. The japanese obviously kept the intensity down to match the low-stakes. Then imagine later own when stakes are high and the characters start going ぶっ殺す and you can't up the intensity because you already used your motherfuckers on a table tennis match.>>724881258That's very context dependent. Because 許す isn't just forgive. There's also meaning like, "approval", "allowance", and other things that hard to describe in english. That 許さない could be more of "I won't let you" you know.

It's undeniable translators fuck things up on purpose but a lot of errors stem from having no context to what you are reading. You might have no idea what character is talking, who they are talking to or where they are. It might not be in the order it is presented in game. Translation is a huge clusterfuck that requires being able to play through the text you are translating but this is never going to happen in a professional setting.
>>724879964>japanese audio>okami no ~ to iu hanashi da nante kuso kurae>can you believe all that all that nonsense>actual translation: all that talk about ~ by the government, they can eat shit (alternatively, screw that)why do they do this
>character is established as super nice and gentle>voice: "oh no!">English subtitles: "SHIT!"
>>724881254>好い加減I hate that word so fucking much>adverb, means quite (e.g. ii kagen tsukareteiru->quite tired (had my fill, I'm tired))>na-adj: half-assed, not paying proper attention to details (e.g. half-baked job)>na-adj: irresponsible (e.g. saying shit that is out of place and you'll regret)>na-adj: (to the) proper degree (i.e. stop half-assing things, get it together and do things properly)fucking words, so many fucking uses. I'll never learn to use it

>>724884059I don't remember a single BlazBlue character saying Fuck in the Dub. The games are rated T for Teen. Plenty of yelling shit though.
>>724884057Why are you trying to memorize every instance of use separately, retard? The phrase refers to the extent something is done. The context decides if too much is done or too little. That's all you need to know to understand every sentence formed with the words.
>>724884057Every context of seen that it's something like "cut that shit out"
>>724880235>character clearly speaking English in the Japanese audio>english dub and sub rewrites it into a completely different line
>>724884756Even in the pic.
>Japanese: Konichiwa>English: HelloWeeaboos: wtf incorrect!!!!!
>>724884792和製英語, false twins
>>7248843653I don't even remember that character being in that game.
>>724884867It should be more like "morning" right? Like sure "morning" and "hello" are basically interchangable depending on the context but if someone said morning and you're job was to transcribe their words you wouldn't put down hello. Language difference require concessions but I don't think こんにちは has weird usages that'd require changing it to hello.
>>724884954I don't need the localizer to treat me like a retard that doesn't know how to figure out context clues.
>>724885232I caught one
>>724884756then you haven't been looking hard enough>いい加減なこと言いやがって本当に情けないことだ>>724884595because ii kagen can mean "right, proper degree," but it can refer to "something that's convenient to you but inconvenient to others" as it can "the right, proper degree (as in get your shit together)." furthermore, the adverbial use is not the first thing that would come to mind upon hearing the expressionsince the expression doesn't exist in English, you have to try extra hard to identify opportunities where it could be usedit's a similar deal with shit like 存在 (大事な存在? the fuck is a precious existence?).tl;dr they're separate meanings, and just knowing the meaning is not enough

>>724885232Morning indicates time of day which hello does not.
>>724885980I said "basically interchangeable depending on the context".
>>724885810It literally is the english don't mind (what happened) being abbreviated and your longer wording is what don't mind means.

>hai>YES SIR, RIGHT AWAY!!!!!
I translated "やっぱり" as "Yessiree" the other day, in the context of someone you encounter at a restaurant eating something saying something to the effect of "やっぱり nothing beats a good (food item)".In fact, "yessiree" might actually be the single English word with the closest parallels to that usage of やっぱり that I've ever encountered since it somehow manages to encapsulate that abstract "self-satisfied" sense of something living up to one's expectations, while also having entirely different usages that have fuck all to do with that usage.
Ninja Gaiden 4 has this thing where there's two subtitles. One is Dubtitles. The other is subtitles that more match the Japanese if you're playing with Japanese Voices. Yakuza 7 does this too. More games should do this.
>>724893996>In fact, "yessiree" might actually be the single English word with the closest parallels to that usage of やっぱり that I've ever encountered since it somehow manages to encapsulate that abstract "self-satisfied" sense of something living up to one's expectations, while also having entirely different usages that have fuck all to do with that usage.so what would the most literal translation of やっぱり be

Nothing beats (slop)!>Of course, nothing beats (slop)!Because none of these "literal" renderings of やっぱり actually capture its essence in usage as nearly something of a "filler" word that doesn't express "real" meaning, but instead some abstract, virtual meaning.Kind of like how people say stuff like>Boy, that burger was delicious!"Boy" means nothing here and is purely "feeling-based". You couldn't back-translate it to>少年よ!そのハンバーガーはおいしかったな!In the same way attacking やっぱり with a literal eye misses its framing completely.

>>724884792>>724887004Video game subtitles are for the English VO. When translating, the Japanese script uses English loanwords that are typically being used to mean something else.
>>724887435Why are people so afraid something being "dated" anyway?
Games are for playing, not consulting.
>>724900996Japanese has a suffering passive form.English doesn't.This means there are some japanese sentences that are LITERALLY impossible to translate to English without completely neutering the sentence. Here's an example:雨に降られたRain fell. Seem simple? THINK AGAIN, the sentence is ACTUALLY "I got rained on".
>>724900845>regardless of religious affiliationNo, it's dissonance on their part.
>>724901036Saying merry christmas means something else?
>>724901220As for that, that's just an instance of localization, as in, "This show is being treated to be aired on English language TV".
>>724898747>>724899086Isn't it basically like learning the actual prefixes and suffixes of words and how they can apply to other ones?
>>724901135My end goal is learning enough to parse the nonsense (kino) wordplay in this series.
>>724899086Learning words from sentences is fine as a beginner but you should really study kanji components as an intermediate learner.

>>724901515no, good luck!
>>724901751The approaches aren't mutually exclusive though, are they? Learning components does not mean memorizing and quizzing yourself on every kunyomi and onyomi reading in the dictionary
>>724901164this is a poor example as that sentence translates into a passive sentence in english as well and it makes your point seem sorta moot. this would be a better example:先月、急に父に死なれました。my father died unexpectedly last monththe japanese sentence is passive and it cannot possibly be converted into an english one with the same meaning

How do I cope I'll never be able to learn another language at my almost 40's, specially one hard as fuck like japanese... no matter how hard I try my learning process of my brain is not the same...
>>724903578Not much to be gained from it.The challenges of translating a video game are difficult to appreciate for someone who hasn't ever done it before. You can have a "perfect" translator do a "correct" version of a game script if you throw the raw text dump at them, and still have things come out "wrong" because they can't see what's happening on the screen.Without an actual separate note pool by the writers/scene designers (you don't often get this btw, and literally never in retro game ROMhacking shit), by the time you've gathered up enough contextual data for an AI to avoid these problems to do a better job than a human translator, you've already played through the game enough to understand the problems/contextual matters and could have produced a solid, foundational translation to build a localization upon.Laypeople think it's just as simple as feeding text into the machine and getting out results, but you still need to be able to provide the machine the background info and other stuff that, again, by the time you have it, you never needed the machine in the first place.
>>724904357Yappari is sometimes used basically as "thought so/should've guessed/its like that." depending on context. Anyway, I was memeing with the black cultural context you lot would be more familiar with on the translation shitpost due personal connection to that sort of language. kek.

>>724903578I've been using machine translation to translate my game, but I've been intensely scrutinizing and double, triple, quadruple checking every single line that comes out of AI. Usually what ends up happening is that I have to whittle down the context until it spits out something that resembles the original context. I refresh the page constantly and have it grade each line or the entire exchange or accuracy or flow. I use multiple models and aggregate with a rough pass. I'm probably overdoing it, but I don't want to take any chances. I don't know if machine translation is at a point where you can just hash out a translation without heavy oversight, but my experience is built entirely on oversight so I'm not one to talk.
>>724933608that's one of the disadvantages of AIshit. it can only pay attention to sentences, without taking notice of the rest of the text, and it lacks context (intertextuality, referents and deictic uses, figures outside the text, etc.)
>>724932138Furthermore, all the ones in power (those with money) push immigration heavily. No one wants to do shit jobs at shit pay? Just import immigrants instead of raising the wage. This has added effect of suppressing the entire pay column: if cleaner gets 8$/hr, you're happy with 20$/hr wages. If cleaner wages go up to 20$/hr due to scarcity, you want a raise. Suppressing low-paying job wages directly suppresses higher pay roles too, netting you massive profit. Its not a conspiracy, everything is going exactly as planned.

>>724927402The thing no self-respecting weeaboo will ever admit, and the point which lolcalizers can consistently hold over them, is that you can't simply "accurately" translate something period. Sometimes it boils down to technical limitations, like it was with RPGs on (S)NES, but the bottom line is that there is no solution to satisfy everyone, because LANGUAGES ARE DIFFERENT WOW BIG SURPRISE. Forget massive context-sensitivity of Japanese, or obscure idioms, or accents and their associations, just the simple fact that somebody shouts out an attack name is not a thing that ever happens in English unless explicitly aping asian sword magic tropes. Not in the impossible-fantastical sense, but in how the closest cultural touchstone is a battlecry. And something like IRON REAVER SOUL STEALER got five too many syllables to really work as one. That particular example is not an unsolveable problem, just like honorifics assuming you are consistent with them, and not bullshitting like Persona. But editorial and autistic arguments stem from fundamental differences like these, the minute implications that two similar words can create. Go read up on various different translations for poetry to really feel how complicated shit gets.

>>724939114Almost every Japanese exchange student coming to my university speaks perfect English. But, there was also an event where Japanese high schoolers toured the premises, and they didn't seem to speak English at all

>>724933892Interesting insight. I'm always skeptical when "right-wing" politicians take power. I suppose she's like a Meloni or Le Pen figure?
>>724913259>where the only word for cumming is cringe as fuckcoming. cumming doesn't exist. i don't know why all hentai translators get it wrong. coming, came, come.
I've been playing through FF14's story one a new character and I'm surprised at how much N1 grammar shows up. I also wonder if Japs freak the fuck out when they get a telegraph called インナーサークル
>>724918560Why are they talking like that during intense combat?

>>724927707what should her japanese catchphrase be translated to?
>>724941362As someone that did that 10 years ago (and did all 5 years, still in Japan) the only thing that is guaranteed is the flight. I had to buy my own car.

>>724941291many items from n1 are very common. higher n lvl is does not necessarily mean frequency. they often build on more basic expressions for a more nuanced tone. it's n2 i believe but ~はしない・~くはない・~くてはいない is one such more nuanced example of the basic negation patterns you see in n5
>>724941783but I have very rarely heard がてら and especially かたわらor Vたら、Vたで
>>724935349It doesn't.He's arguing that since it's passive it shows inconvenience, but passive doesn't inherently show inconvenience. It can show it, the same way as english because it's less direct and can be more vague, but that's it.The meaning in that sentence is pretty clear, "As for all the conversation, we are getting heard by Makima."You can say she might not be paying attention to it the same way you could do it in a non passive form "Makima is listening to our conversation" isn't passive and you could argue she is listening but not paying attention too.In this case it's obvious she is hearing and she is paying attention, it doesn't matter how it's written.
>>724879964Direct translations are impossible and insisting on it is retarded. For example, how do you translate honorifics like like "anon-kun" vs. "anon-san"? You don't. There is absolutely no equivalent in English. You need to a) translate the intended message in other ways, in other lines.ie. Change words slightly to sound more jovial/polite, otherwise you miss the meaning in translation.b) invent a completely new creole dialect of English that has Japanese honorifics. And that's just the most obvious example. Synonyms and translations do not ACTUALLY mean the same exact things.Even word like "bread" means a different object in Germany/US/Italy/etc. because they have different styles of bread. How do you translate "futon"? bed? bedroll? leave it as futon? What about chabudai or genkan? at some point you are not translating, only transcribing.
>>724941783>but I have very rarely heardwhat part of "not necessarily" and "they often" was difficult to understand. i agree がてら is not really used all that often. people might say その足で or something
