>>
>>724898906
ESU is extended security update
it's related to activation because ESUs are available by paying microsoft a certain amount each year and they license your copy of windows to receive them for that year. that uses the same method of activation that windows itself uses, hence its relation to activation bypasses.

there's a bug right now with ESUs in general where it may still show some text saying you aren't getting them, but that's affecting people who bought ESUs through microsoft as well (see https://www.pcworld.com/article/2944058/windows-10-extended-updates-program-not-showing-up-heres-what-to-do.html ). it's just cosmetic and you are in fact getting them.

You can postpone it for several weeks, and that program doesn't allow to automatically download and install "optional" updates
>>
>>724903805
Microsoft still has a way to push updates even if you try to turn it off, and some of those will turn the updates back on.
You also cannot turn off all of the bundled spyware malware. Some of it runs in the Kernel and does not respect anything you can do.
The only way out of either of those is to install on a system with no network hardware and air gap the system.

It does suck that FPS games and just competitive multiplayer games have all resigned themselves to just using kernel level anti cheat as their only way to stop cheating, especially when it doesnt work. I work in IT. You should really just upgrade to 11. The latest (final) security patch to W10 that they released pushes more telemetry than ever onto your device. They really want info on what users aren't upgrading, whether it be to financial or other reasons. Getting on 11 unironically sends less data to MS now.

setup does some heuristics to determine if your hardware is compatible, it either bugged out (quite likely) or you're missing something important like chipset drivers that help it to actually identify what you're using. if you really want to go this route, a clean install would be the best option, but you can try googling for ways around their shitty detection, maybe there's some way to force it with like a launch option or something.

either way, if you're on education you can get by with ESUs for the next three years at least, it's free and takes like a minute or two: >>724898629

I am running a barebones version of Win10 LTSC with everything unnecessary ripped out.
Anything security-related by Microsoft, not to mention "security updates" written by a bunch of outsorced subcontinental baboons in Bangalore, are fucking worthless and never provided any protection in the first place; it's a marketing gimmick and fearmongering to get people to switch to 11. Windows has always been a piss-easy system to crack, so it's not like your updates can actually stop anyone who knows their shit from getting access.
I keep all important files and data on separate drives that I only connect in case of necessity. There is nothing of worth on my PC proper, and I just sweep it with Malwarebytes once in a while.
Once Win10 is completely unable to support new software, much like Win7 today, I will switch to Mint. Or maybe SteamOS, which is essentially the same.
Fite me.

On fedora, you choose how often you want to be notified that there are updates, you choose if you want to manually install them or automatically, AND you choose if you want updates to be applied immediately or after reboot. Also, any update for any application, package, etc etc, will have extremely detailed information about everything that is changing. Also, the time it takes to download/apply updates is very very short.

This how it should be for EVERY operating system. There is no reason that a person should not have this much choice when it comes to updating and this much information about what the updates contain.

>stop forcing full disk encryption down people's throats. there are countless stories of people losing their data because of your encryption fuckery

I still use my desktop, but it's getting on in years. I'm basically converting my Ipad 11th generation into a pseudo laptop with a keyboard case/trackpad. I don't even game on my PC anymore, so fuck it. I'll just use my Ipad as a laptop.

Hell, the fucking CPU in my Ipad is stronger than the Ryzen 7 3700x in my desktop, at least for single core processes, which is 100% what I use it for. I don't give a fuck about multi-core performance. And the GPU doesn't fucking matter if you're not gaming on it, or at least AAA gaming. Really that Ipad will do everything I need as a makeshift computer, and at least it'll continue to get firmware updates/support for the next 4-5 years at the minimum.

I'm not upgrading to Windows 11 until I save up the cash for a new gaming desktop, or just an new PC in general. Computers are fucking expensive. Sure, you can get a cheap $400-$500 laptop and it'll do everything you want for light-medium browsing/entertainment. Gaming laptops are still well over $1,000, and a mid-high gaming desktop will run you easily $1,400-$2,000+

I just can't afford that. Black Friday won't be enough to help me unless they markdown like $800-$1,000 laptops down by 40%-50%, which I can't see them doing. They're not gonna take a $1,000 laptop and sell it for $500-$600, and even if they did they'd sell out very quickly.

We simply don't have a hostile relationship to the place we get updates from in the first place, they are not our enemies and they aren't trying to enshittify us constantly for profit. The only issue you might encounter is updating to a new major release and not every package or firmware is up to date yet, but your current release will still be supported sometimes for years so you can safely wait until the shiny new thing is ready for you.

>>724926294
>most distributions automatically update
This is just factually incorrect. They might automatically check for updates, but almost no distribution will automatically download or apply them. The only exception I can think of is Ubuntu and it's "flavors" simply because Snap packages automatically update without the ability to turn this off. But, looking at the Steam Hardware Survey, Ubuntu is barely used by 10% of Linux gamers. Arch, Mint, CachyOS, Bazzite, Fedora, Manjaro or EndeavourOS don't update automatically by default.

MS on their own TechNet outright stated at the very start that they are aware how pointless it would be to collect any sort of data on offline machines and provided methods of disabling telemetry completely. Same for updates, Group Policy setting lets you disable them completely and another to "lock" your Windows on desired feature version. It's all in their fucking manual, only TechNet is named differently now. What people sperged about was how preview version had telemetry almost on keylogging level, which was also openly stated by MS (but people are dumb to just click "next", as usual) and some Russian "hackers" (really trustworthy source, totally) claimed it extend to any future versions too.

I was, at one point, explaining why these assumptions are wrong but I got tired by people asking how much MS pays me so I stopped. Maybe MS should pay me after all.

Actually shaders get precached for DXVK and vulkan when using steam AND mesa/proton improvements make linux have a smoother experience than windows.

Windows is the OS that needs to build cache specifically if there's not a preshader cache compilation in the game specifically like detroit become human or last of us.

Because I was actually doing some WORK on my PC, unlike Linux Witnesses who only do ricing and neverending tweaking.

We had Linux (Debian IIRC) on lab PC simply because it had to control single measuring station so it required only software coded by us for this specific task. It would still randomly scramble data and USB ports without warning or reason so we lost at least few measurements as a result on regular basis. Best part was how community was aware of this bug and nobody, NOBODY knew how to fix it. Peak Linux moment.
>>
>>724936136
Shaders have to be compiled no matter what API they use. Whether it's Vulkan or DX12. On Linux, you can do the caching before running the game, on Windows it depends on whether the developers have implemented a pre-caching mechanism or just compile shaders as you play.
Typically shaders on Windows are just compiled during gameplay which can introduce stutters.

Are you just pretending to be retarded? Shaders are compiled before the game launches unless you manually skip it or you globally toggle the setting to always skip shader compilation and do it during run time. Again, just like it's done on some console emulators. Console emulators, just like Steam, compile shaders before launching the game because nobody wants to experience stutters. It's the user choice to skip that step and instead compile shaders during the actual gameplay that causes stutters.

on windows you're at the mercy of whatever microsoft wants to do, from adding ads to the start menu to forcing the task bar at the bottom, and if you can disable those it's because they allow it.

that's the key difference between linux and windows, on linux if you don't like something you can just fork the software, patch it and rebuid it. while you yourself might not be interested in doing the patching, you still benefit from this as you can install the forked software like linux-zen in a couple of commands.

Something funny happened somewhere around windows 7 era, and now suddenly everyone is convinced that that new system-breaking critical vulnerabilities are found every day and that if you won't update, epic hacker will immediately find your pc and rape your ass. The biggest danger you've exposed yourself to on the internet was leaving your real name in your 2015 github student project using github nickname that's same as your steam account name, not a newly discovered windows 10 vulnerability that allows someone to gain access to your registry if you'll open a pdf with hidden code injection using exactly and specifically internet explorer 11.287742.321

>RawTherapee or Darktable

NTA but they are all weird in their own way. Darktable developers change ideas about direction frequently, messing up old macros and workflow. Lately they removed fucking "contrast, brightness, saturation" module because "color correction" or whatever else "can do the same and more" while the module in question outright states in their own fucking manual that it shouldn't be used by users who are not familiar with colour theory. So basically they remove easy and working module in favour of complex and powerful module that require fucking studies to grasp. In 90% cases you really just need to slap that +10% saturation and don't need to manually adjust chroma/luma channels in shadows/midtones/highlights separately. And when I have 2-3k photos from the event and work on selected 100-200, I sure DO need automation instead of sitting at every single photo and manually adjust everything.

And let's not start at how Darktable noise reduction is a mess that would love to melt your details instead.
>>
>>724947195
>our economy is actually fucking done
Not really. The AI bubble popping wouldn't affect most people or most industries.
>>
>>724947195
NTA but does that mean that, since AI bubble is predicted to burst soon, we are just one step away from total China/India domination?
>>
>>724947502
I believe India at least will turn out to be a self-correcting problem. China dominance is a likely scenario though. Well, unless an actual major war breaks out - in that case you'll have USA (more military spendings than numbers 2 through 9 combined) vs China (their navy loses ships to their own mine traps)
>>
>>724947747
I don't think that any side wants actual war as both have it at much worse state that they openly claim and don't want to say "check".

India shares China lack of morals but, fortunately for everyone else, lacks China intelligence and planning capabilities.

>i can't have a virus if i don't check
paranoia and security go hand in hand.
>>
>>724953789
If I need to check then it's not a very scary virus.
>>
>>724953789
Let's say I have a virus, how does that affect me?
Steam works fine. Browser and 4chan works fine. Youtube works fine. Videoplayer works fine. Photoshop works fine. Please explain.

Aislop is the definition of "you don't know what it does". Holy giga tech illiterate.
>>
>>724954097
You're not very good at convincing people of your position...
>>
>>724954004

Windows was literally built on AI and for AI.
>>
>>724953584
malware devs just moved on to bloatware like overwolf where normies will happily give you all the data you could dream of.
>>
>>724953882
This. As long as everything works and none of my shit gets deleted I don't care.

You've been given 20 minutes to explain your position and so far you got nothing.

Virus are bad because...they just are? Even if they don't do anything?

>there could be hypothetical invisible malware running in the background, that never actually does anything you're able to notice!
>and maybe the update will save you from it, there's no way to be sure tho
This is the stage MS shills are at.
>>
>>724954698
No you know what, go ahead, you're right anon, viruses are totally fine ;)
>>
>>724954912
They are. Glad your paranoia was healed.

>Even if they don't do anything?
i can't tell whether you're joking or not.
they wouldn't bother deploying these botnets just to do nothing. these botnets are used to ddos websites and plenty of other shit. they can also obviously be used as regular viruses at the flick of a command as they are already embbed into your system.
anyone can deal with a virus that instantly shows itself, this is a more latent threat that keeps sysadmins up at night.
>>
>>724954895
It's fucking hilarious.
>>
so is "tranny" the new faggot and everyone only uses it in the sense of "idiot" anymore not talking about actual transvestites
