Post game moments that scared you as a child
>>724897735This moment scared me so much as a child it helped get my brother and father into video games because I ran screaming to them to help me deal with it. I'm unsure if that bettered or worsened their lives.
The piano in Mario 64.
>>724897909It is really funny how much the first resident evil terrified me, just standing in the halls abs hearing the zombies but not being able to see them due to the camera angle . I had to play it with my older brother
>>724897735
>>724897735Itagaki was taken from us too soon
>>724898141>rent OoT from blockbuster as a kid>there was already a save file on the catridge >load it up>in a dungeon full of these fuckers>get grabbed once>turn the game off>ask mom to return itMM is one of my favorite games of all time but I never actually played OoT because of that one occasion.
>>724897735These fuckers
>>724898402OoT as a kid was always pretty fucking spooky>getting caught in the field at night when heading to the castle for the first time>the hand crawler faggots in the forest temple>the well>the shadow temple>future hyrule town
The music didn't help
>>724897735https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwWseEAcMJYThat guy gave me the chills and nightmares. The death scene where our cart just falls on the ground and we don't see what happens had a special flavor of horror - that's how I learned that you don't necessarily have to show everything to impose fear.
>>724897735These guys scared me but I couldn't stop going over and messing with them.
This fucker jumpscaring me at the end of FF7's Cave of the Gi
Dead Space hit different when I played is as a child
>>724897909Lel my asshole older friend let me play the game when I was 8 and laughed his ass off at my reactions. I would dream about wandering through old corridors with locked camera positions after
hearing bosses through the walls in Legend of Zelda
>>724897735this game in general, especially the musichttps://youtu.be/1eeDGpYzwcU
>>724897735The ice level in space station silicon valley
>>724897735That part where the alien kidnaps Paula and you have to go through the department store in the dark.No idea why it freaked me out so much as a kid.
>>724897735This did legitimately terrify me as a child. Was my first introduction to horror as a whole
>>724897735For some reason these fuckers scared the shit out of me as child, the sound they made always took me off guard>>724898141Also this, the first time I saw the castle town as adult Link really shocked me, and I didn't even see the zombies at first , until one of them jumped at me, I avoided going back to the castle town for the longest time.
>>724898141For me it was Wallmasters. The swooshing sound and growing shadows was peak child anxiety, plus there was a tangible punishment beyond just damage if they actually landed on you.
What were they thinking with these chucky doll enemies?
>>724898402I had nightmares for 3 days in a row after beating the Bottom of the Well and the Shadow Temple and since then, whenever I replayed the game, I would rush to get the Lens of Truth and scram out of the well because the bottom floor scared me shitless.
This cave was better horror than most horror games.
>>724897735Something about this shit freaked me the fuck out as a kid. It wasn't a jumpscare type of fear, but that weird sound that played when he turned to wood bothered me deeply.
>>724897735Piggys level in Manhunt scared the shit out of me
>>724898141Ocarina of Time had a lot of creepy and dark shit like the Shadow Temple in general. Zelda should go back to that art style and atmosphere but alas it will likely never happen again.
>>724906761The whole ass horror levels in Gex 2 were full of scary shit as a kid, they did their job properly, but some stuff that stuck to me:>All those ghosts with skull faces>That one elevator with a Mona Lisa, as it goes down, it shows more of the painting and reveals she has a snake body>The damn morgue section where you are inside big green empty halls with nothing but dead bodies around you>Different level but the whole atmosphere in Rezopolis was very off-putting, probably the musichttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXxw3QMuBug
>>724897735Seeing the end result of what happened to Bhashea Castle from Lost Kingdoms in Lost Kingdoms 2 in the form of a Bhashea Castle bonus level. You really start to see the origins of From Software's inspirations for the souls franchise.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJHpaNrXhEQ
ITT:
>>724902627Deep cut. What a bizarre game.
>>724907120Yah that sounds spooked me as well.
Honest to god, this shit. It scared me so bad that my parents would threaten playing it when I misbehaved and it always worked.https://youtu.be/MPtztz3LXlM?si=l-brb8W8yF-7CgdA
>>724907665Kinda the point of the thread, it's about stuff that was scary as a child.
>>724907803If that so
>>724907864
>>724897735That shit terrifies me as an adult
>>724902627Me too bro. A lot of the game was like this
>>724900718Im finally going to play this series next year after Metroid Prime 4 and RE9
The whole game but especially this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8JNxsLVEoM
>>724908056I unironically ran out of the room when I first got grabbed by this thing in the Forest Temple. I had to get my little brother to kill it for me
>>724907665That's not what the meme means, stupid. The image is about adults that find media meant for children more scary or deep than it really is, while the actual target audience wouldn't notice these aspects at all.The thread is about things that actually scared people as children.
>>724907665Thats the point of the thread you dumb noob
>>724908171>>724908386
>>724897735a jumpscare in one garfield flash game.
>>724897735I remember as a kid getting freaked out by the high res render of this zombie they'd put on demo discs.
The whole game scared me.
>>724897735These fuckers. Not helped by the claustrophobic level design.
giant lizard in the lake from RE4. My brother tricked me to shoot into the lake and i was dumb enough to do what he told.
It was early teens butYes really
>>724907029RE was just devilish with these
https://youtube.com/watch?v=xXl_poVGbRUthis shit scared the hell out of 8 year old me, had to sleep with light on that night
This level in Rayman 2.
>>724911853the dinos are nothing it's the black megapedes and the regular megapedes that are terrifying
scariest game i ever played
>>724908341>My negro
>>724897735this and silent hill haunted me as a child, nothing else even came close to bothering mei don't even know how i slept after playing those before bedhad to play grim fandango to clear my mind
>>724897735the nightmare realm of rayman 2, Those who know, know
>>724897735fell backwards in my chair at this fucker and my dad laughed his ass off
I never played this as a kid, but take a lookhttps://youtu.be/_f21XoYlZTk?si=oE9-i6HNrnIR10exmonster shows up around 21 minutes
>>724915656Magapedes?
>>724914565Picrel is the absolute best jumpscare I've ever suffered. So many factors around it and leading up to it, makes it a godlike scare.
>>724912663THIS.Now you get it. This is the scariest thing in my childhood.
>>724905808Those moblins didn't "scare" me at first but later on I realized how kind of terrifying the sounds they make are. And they just yell at you as they charge.
https://youtu.be/_KDAWbjftBw?si=OKZbZ0y7MO72HCB6I was having fun seeing a sexy vampire women kill nazis and then these fuckers showed up
>>724897735My dad sent me this game while he was in the military and I played it as a kid not knowing it was a horror game.
These motherfuckers, pretty much everything about Atlantis, really, but these motherfuckers in particular, the noises they made scared the piss out of me.Don't even get me started on that legless cocksucker at the end.Honorable mention to the rat transformation scene from Parasite Eve, that one scarred me for life
good thread. have a bump.
>>724897735Didn't necessarily scare me but man was he unnerving.
>>724897735For me it was the licker cutscene in 2
>>724916426Oh yes, wanted to post this. I was too much of a pussy to get through it even with cheats.
>>724907029The camera in the hallway really hung you out to dry. The dog crashing through the window and the first humter encounter were brutal. Then RE2 with that creepy thing with the tongue ick.
>deerhead mounted on a wall>full on deer comes out of the wall and chases youi won't lie it got me
The Dead Space demo had this section from Chapter 3 and scared the absolute shit out of me. It also made me love the Pulse Rifle like a security blanket and got me hooked on horror games ever since (I'd almost exclusively played shitty RTS games and flight sims before this).
>>724907029I have this distinct memory of being scared so bad by this part that I instantly switched off my N64
I think what made the re1 zombies so scary is just how good the audio was for them, whoever was doing the groaning really made it sound like a walking corpse
>>724897735parasite eve when the dog splits open in the middleI was watching my relative's older kid play it and that shit scared the daylight out of me, I only found out it was from parasite eve like 8 years ago too.
>>724902314holy shit I forgot that this existed.
>>724911853I beat this game at 8 and it was the single handedly most terrifying thing I accomplished at that age, made me less of a pussy
>>724897735a shallow FOV against a larger-than-life entity always freaks me out. this was one of my first exposures to the concept.
>>724897735>This masterpiece better get a full remakehttps://youtube.com/shorts/9ZSpMi9hqo4?si=450vyAGD0h8THiyo
This terrified the shit out of me when I was 7
>>724899723I was gonna post this exact same image, but you had already posted it, so I got the error.
>>724897735My older brother pranked me with this way back in the day. I remember being so scared I cried and pissed myself. He got me good.
I think I nope'd off this game for days after encountering this the first time.
>>724927043Good Jumpscares will ALWAYS be kino and im tired of pretending that they are not, get emotionally scarred faggit
>>724922325Nemesis is such a god tier antagonist
Spoopy
>>724922325remake fucked up a good oportunity with this scaling to rocket launcher after first meeting
>>724906761>game about TV and film referencesGee...
>>724918354oh fugg....
X-Play had this segment on Dead Rising that terrified me but got me interested in learning more about the game. I had a sort of morbid curiosity to see more.Since then growing up zombies haunted my nightmares and I was scared as fuck of them, but I would be forced to tag along on games like Left 4 Dead and Dead Island when my friends picked them up.
>>724900718>hit different>as a childYou're still a child, mentally.>>724923793The tint makes it a whole lot harder to see where you're going. In the PSP version, with the tiny screen, it's way worse.
Palpatine's face in the background of the game over screen for some SNES star wars game. Terrified the absolute piss out of me when I was like 4 years old. One of my earliest memories was of my brother and cousin trapping me in a room with this on the screen and laughing their asses off at me while I cried over it.
>>724925985RE1 literally never released on N64 so I don't know what your memory is from
>>724897735this really scared me as a kid, it just comes out of nowhere
>>724928247I love RE3 and Nemesis but this ad makes him look like a retard with a tiny body and a big goofy head lmaoLooks like a fucking midget kek
>>724897735My first night on the demo island.
>>724927701GOOD MORNING SAAR
>>724927575The first crimson head I encountered was one of my favorite gaming moments of all time. I was in a hallway and the angle didn't allow me to see either side of me. I just heard the growling and running and had no fuckin idea what to do so I just stood there ready. Then it attacked. I hadn't read about crimson heads before hand so it was a great surprise. >THE FUCKIN ZOMBIES COME BACK TO LIFE?!
>>724906761>>724907580Have a love/hate relationship with the Scream TV levels in Gex 2. They're very high quality and effective horror set pieces all around, especially that damn eerie violin music, but they really feel out of place in a, you know, fucking Gex game of all things. Gex never takes itself seriously and parodies everything, yet the horror levels play it completely straight at trying to unnerve the shit out of you. And they're really pushing it with all the blood splatters, especially in the morgue. It also doesn't help that for some reason, the devs made Scream TV the most prominent levels in the whole game, so you're in there a good 40% - 50% of your playthrough. With all that said I'm still very fond of Gex 2 and enjoy replaying it, but I just wish it had better level variety. Like by making Kung Fo Theatre more prominent, that level has a banger theme.
>>724937874And on the topic of raunchy, comedy-focused platformers that take a complete tonal shift into horror, Conker's Bad Fur Day is another one that plays its horror level completely straight. These motherfuckers genuinely scare the shit out of me, as does the entire mansion area crawling with them after your vampire uncle gets mutiliated in the giant meat grinder and you have to find your way out.https://youtu.be/96ZmFZBgmuU
ah... fresh meat
>>724897735They really didn't need to go so hard for a bad ending. Thr devs really wanted to let you know how much you fucked up.https://youtu.be/FFLUxWvU6vo?si=UvLGPWc_ETRv1XD9
>>724897735The one hit kill was shocking
Probably the first time I witnessed an NPC team member actually die, and it was so brutally. I was genuinely shocked.
>>724907313Good choice. The loud clanking and whirring he made stalking you around the arena was intense. The sewers were also tough.
>>724939194what are those green things?
>>724897735I didn't play RE1 but I did play REmake at 12 and that was the first time I felt actually terrified playing a game, it was nothing like the little spooks from previous games I'd played. The intro to REmake also scared off my brother, I think it was the dogs ripping your teammate to pieces that was too much for him. Took me a few months to actually complete the game.
>>724897735Seeing licker crawling outside the RPD window for the first time and window smash somewhere close afterwards gave me nightmares.
>>724926035I wouldn't go that far, they're a bit goofy around the mansion, there's one sound they make that's downright funny, like "duurrraagh". However, the zombies in the lab, they actually make unnerving sounds.
>>724936490"Jumpscares" are supposed to be Indian now too? Explain that one.
The most I ever jumped from a game was from a fucking floorboard breaking in RE2. It made me jump more than the Licker crawling past the window or Mr. X bursting through the wall.
The bafflingly intense two zombie levels in Conker's Bad Fur Day. You go from hilarity in the Count Conkula cutscene and bat gameplay pooping on silly villagers directly into eerie creeping around the mansion with actually threatening zombies rushing at you when they get close.
>>724915276Knaaren in Rayman 3 were scarier. Who could've prepared me for basically a Nemesis-type unkillable motherfucker in my kids' platformer?
Anything from this game. It was like scary stories in game form.
>>724939694That exact screenshot you posted where you can hear Lisa flailing around with the chains and her inhuman moans scared me shitless so hard I dropped the game for 7 years on end. Good game capcom
>>724936067That reminds me of that one time I played Aladdin game for the Genesis and got a cutscene with Jaffar disguised as an old man and creepy music, right before the dungeon level.
>>724939641Fumes from the poison water
I remember being really young and being scared shitless while watching my brother play FF12 whenever skeletons or similar monsters show upI distinctly remember covering my eyes whenever he was playing through Lhusu Mines and King Raithwall's tomb and having to ask him what was happeningPretty fond memory nowadays though
>>724940046>>724939694Having absolutely no context for what the hell you just heard since you're likely to go down there early in the game is devilish
*loud as fuck musical sting*
What was Nintendo thinking?
I can still hear the noise they make. Unironically could not finish the game when I was a kid because of the sewer level.
>>724940716
my peanus weanus of course
>>724939821This part made me stop playing for a bit.
>>724936490take your latte with soi faggot
>>724940716>this would be pretty scary, let's use itThat's about it.
>>724940743Then the boss fight with the giant one does not actually start when you enter the boss arena or have an intro cutscene like all the other bosses in the game, nothing happens til you actually go underwater then suddenly the boss music is playing and it's right in front of you. It's a good touch.
>>724940985It took 14 hours for this post. This board is really going down the drain.
>>724907029The part in RE 2 where you see a jumping shadow through a window genuinely made me turn off the game and the console, and never turn it on again until I got older.
>>724911610AAAARGH
Gave me an unpleasant swooping sensation in my stomach. Luckily he turns out to be friendly and so any fear dissipated but I'll always remember the first time you see him.
The Mudokon Pops reveal in Abe's Oddysee's intro.
>>724941264I FUCKING HATED THIS THING. CLOUDY ASS WATER AND GIANT SPIKED TENTACLES WITH LEECH LOOKING MOUTH, FUCK THAT
>>724939168the village is so frantic and intense when you aren't good at the game yet. still good once you know how to play but nothing matches that first playthrough
mimi from super paper mario. cant get a pic because im still scared to this day. seeing that shit at 8 years old triggered my arachnophobia
>>724897993That's just a fucking jump scare though. Like yeah ofc it got me. It's not like it made me afraid of pianos
