>Game punishes you for bringing an upgraded version of an item to a fight
>>724917073I don't remember this, probably because I didn't upgrade the sword until later. What happens exactly?
>>724918274Due to the way the game handles collision data with the spikes, using the level 4 sword (the Golden Sword) makes Mothula immune to almost every attack you can do with it. The only attacks you can do are sword beams and the little poke when holding a spin attack. This also applies to doing spin attacks with the level 3 sword (the tempered sword), and if you hit Mothula with the fire rod while it's over spikes, you won't do any damage to it>just use the fire rod anywayThat's what it's for, yep. But if the Golden Sword did function properly, you would do more damage with it during this fight than the Fire Rod could ever do. The GBA version fixes this oversight and you can beat Mothula in 3 hits with the Golden Sword if you wanna postpone this dungeon until then.
>>724918734I see, thanks for the explanation. Guess kid me was lucky, if I knew english back then and how to upgrade the sword then I would've struggled more with alttp.
>>724917073Sounds like a buggy boss fight.
just shove the fire rod up it's ass like a real man
It's pretty weird you would get the fire rod then leave skull woods to do Thieves Town, Ice Palace and misery mire to unlock the golden sword.>>724918734It was fixed in the GBA version cause I think there was a boss rush in the new dungeon.
>>724918734Really? Fuck. I had a playthrough a few years ago and this was almost my only death. Grant you, I've played this game the past dozen times over the years and never got one death.
I remember struggling with this on my replay about 6 months ago, but not as much as the fucking dark forest maze in general
>>724921085You don't need the fire rod for any of those dungeons, so if you forget to do skull woods for some reason it could be possible to show up with the golden sword.
>>724918734Wow. This game is ASS.
>>724917073I've never put it off that long, but I do usually do dungeon 4 before 2 and 3 so I can get the tempered sword earlyAlso, I've never, ever done that stupid block puzzle in dungeon 5 as I always do dungeon 6 first to get the staff
>>724922871I played this game for the first time recently, I tried not to look anything up but I had to look up why that dumb block wouldn't move at the end of the dungeon lol
>>724918734>if you hit Mothula with the fire rod while it's over spikes, you won't do any damage to itI always hated this shit, the room is surrounded in fuckin spikes.
>>724917073i've tried playing no-save minimum heart games, and if not helmasaur this is the fucker that gets mewhich pisses me off because he ain't that hard
>>724917073this is the fight I think of when I decide that lttp is worse than oot. Its also why I think albw is better too
>>724925450Helmasaur is pretty easy with bombs and can be rushed down with arrows in phase 2. Mothula is one of those fights that either dies in 7 seconds or you run out of magic and you hopefully brough a potion to refill it. Though the golden bee just kills it for you as well. If Blind didn’t have so many counter strats he’d be the hardest, but as is, either Mothula or Trinexx wins out. Ganon isn’t bad with a golden sword though fighting him with the regular master sword is very boring.>>724925535ALBW’s bosses are really good. I liked pretty much all of them, only Arrghus (eyeball jellyfish) was whatever. The Gemsaur King or whatever it was called is cool.
>>724925824How about no silvers ganon
>>724920970omg
>we will never get a zelda game in the style of LttP ever againI want to cry
>>724917073The only time I've ever really noticed this behavior with Mothula is when playing with randomizer. Casually without doing dungeons out of order he's just kind of whatever.
>>724921729You're more likely to go to skull woods for the fire rod than randomly stumble upon the Bombos spell to use in Ice Palace. I bet most players don't even know it works on enemies only vunerable to the fire rod. Otherwise you're techically correct. You need to beat both Misery Mire and Ice Palace to unlock the super bomb.
>>724925863Silverless Ganon is just learning the timing for the spin attack to damage him during that phase. It can take forever to pull off the first time.
>>724917073I fucking love ALTTP Randomizer
>>724917073This boss and boss room was such a mess, it comes off like something an amateur dev would do to add challenge while giggling to himself - not that the actual fight is that hard, but gameplay wise it just comes off as tanking hits while rushing it down.Zelda classic quests had many such cases.
>>724928059I've tried plenty other randomizers and I still can't help but feel that ALTTP is just the outright best one. Its map and items are just perfect for it.
>>724927830It's the best Zelda format. It feels open but still locks a few areas behind progression items. Some dungeons can be done out of order but do have scaling difficulty. Turtle Rock is harder than Palace of Darkness.Something ALBW ruined because every dungeon has to be easy since you absolutely can do them out of order and only need the require item to solve all the puzzles.
>>724917073A month ago I beat alttp again and I dont even remember this boss.Guess I got brain damage.
>>724928160The randomizer is very robust and allows a ton of customization. Shit like door insanity and putting items under pots and bushes.I'm not good with Super Metroid sequence breaks so I don't like the combo randomizer.
>>724928383Super Metroid feels more restrictive in rando anyway ("oh I didn't get morph ball or bombs? Guess I'll do nothing"), and has the occasional softlock here and there. Some randos fix up those softlocks, but I don't think the SMZ3 combo rando does.
>>724928160The only other one I like is DK64 rando. It just outright fixes everything wrong with the vanilla game.
>>724917073>Game punishes you for playing the dungeons out of orderboohoo
>>724928238The boss fight is more the moving floor and spikes than the moth
>>724928523That hasn't been my experience. It's certainly more gated by trick knowledge and execution than ALttP, but it has a very high fidelity of what you are and aren't comfortable with doing. ALso the SMZ3 rando rules.
>>724928876There's only so many times I can deal with screw attack start, morph with power bombs start or other nonsense, is my experience
There's no way you'd have the best sword without looking up a guide anyway. And that's retarded shit in Zelda, since it has always been designed to be played by children.
>>724928982Screw attack taking you down to green brinstar is a bit of a hassle but a PB start is fine even though routing with just 5 of them is a pain in the dick unless you have save stations modded to refill ammo.
>>724917073No problemo
>>724917073Aren't you supposed to blast this nigga with the fire rod and nothing else works or am I thinking of a different boss?
>>724917073I don't even remember a moth being in the game. WTF.
>>724929268Trinex (the boss with three heads) requires fire rod and ice rod, the moth doesn't.
>>724929568Oh yeah, also cold stare (ice temple boss) also requires either fire rod or bombos, because otherwise you can't damage it to get to second phase.
>>724928876I once had a SMZ3 seed where I didn't find the morph ball until after beating Ganon. Went from checking everything in Zelda to blowing past everything in SM.
