>play 3 on release
>it mostly sucks until the last few levels
>mods clean up the early campagin and fix the pacing
>play 4
>it's such a fucking piece of shit and complete design failure that it makes 3 look like a masterpiece in comparison
I should have seen the red flags with open world and consumables, but I was in denial
>>

Sucks that croteam doesn't understand its own game. TSE was so perfect
>>
>>724917389
I like the knockoff they made of Born to be Wild to be played in the opening cutscene.

>>
>>724917389
the first two are a bit overrated
3 is massively underrated
>>
>>724919576
I disagree, I think TFE/TSE are masterpieces and everything that came after didn't understand the genius of the first games
encounter design >>>>>>> everything else
>>
I really like 3 and finished it multiple times but there's too much downtime and too many instances of fucking nothing happening.
>>
The coolest part of 3 is the devastator can be used to kill several kleers at a time, since it won't detonate until out of danger range for explosions
so any you hit at point blank will get demolished, and then it'll detonate and kill the ones behind it too
the game doesn't tell you this but it gives it a ton of potential for custom levels
>>
yeah i think 2 is the best game
>>
>>724919825
the underground sections with those fucking monkeys kill any interest i have in replaying BFE

apart from questional performance and a very early and late difficulty spike until you realize you have a dash, I found this mod to be excellent

>>724919982
there are at least 2 complete campaign overhauls that remove all of the spidermonkey segments and rework things to feel more like the originals
both are good and worth playing
>>
>>724919982
you can beeline all those segments.

4 is not even close to that bad its still fun to play it just feely weirdly unfinished. Worst level in 4 is better than worst level in 3. Both 4 and 3 have weirdly realistic ugly levels with big empty spaces 4 did not start that.
>>
>>724919772
I fucking hate the puzzles and gimmicks like the bouncy super speed rooms in TSE just piss me off every time I play it. TFE has less of that but less large scale battles. Basically every game in the franchise has stupid bullshit in it that detracts from the experience.
>>
>>724919920
if the first few levels didnt suck ass with the stupid fuck tribal blue people maybe. Outside of that the awful humor can be ignored and its decent in the second half.

this has been an issue with all of them except 2.
>>
>>724920798
Yea but especially in 4 because of the motorcycle level thats fucking huge and unfinished. So outside of that, which is a thing in all of the games like you said, the gameplay and enemy placement in 4 is goodd and I enjoy it.

>single shotgun in s tier
>coach gun in f tier
>>
>>724920659
that's deliberate because the player needs a huge amount of room to move while fighting all those enemies being thrown at them and travelling to the next ambush encounter requires longs distances be travelled to get to each area
>>
>>724921237
both the shotguns are almost ass in TSE. teh flamethrower outclasses both of them.
>>
>>724917389
the jewel of the nile dlc is basically what the game should've been from the start.
>>
>>724917850
>complete design failure
Design-wise it mogs 3 in every way. Better weapons, better enemies, better fights.

Performance-wise, it's abysmal, yeah.
>>
>>724921286
ok but theres also huge areas with no combat or minimal enemies where it just doesnt make sense because no huge fights are occurring there but whatever.
>>
>>724922674
3 is way more balanced game with better fights. 4 has it were most of the weapons again render other weapons superflous. whereas most of the big fights dogpile sam with so much shit that you're skipping them with vehicles or using the several "i win" gadgets you're given. carcassone and breakfast in france are the worst levels in the series because of this shit.
>>
>>724923478
nah I think youre way overstating things. Also SS2 has worse levels than those in 4.
>>
>>724923478
>3 is way more balanced game with better fights
lmao

BFE, where in almost every fight you are in a rectangular box and enemies spawn strictly from the front?

BFE, where you can outrun kleers and kamikaze with sprint and fight design makes NO effort to stop you?

Where the game almost never locks you in an arena so you can retreat to back to the beginning of the level if you want?

Nah. I love BFE, unreasonably so, but it has the weakest fights out of TFE, TSE and SS4/SM.

> most of the big fights dogpile sam with so much shit that you're skipping them with vehicles or using the several "i win" gadgets you're given. carcassone and breakfast in france are the worst levels
Or you can git gud and get through those fights on Serious without gadgets and feel more accomplishment than you do beating any fight in BFE (including the overly long and tedious Guardian of Time).

And ironically, the first two DLC levels were the first ones they made during 3's development.
>>

>Croteam removed all old builds of Sam Fusion and replaced them with a newer build from 2022
Fusion bros, are we finally gonna get out of beta status?
>>
>>724921430
why were they so fucking allergic to the Reptiloids that they turned into DLC monsters when they were a staple in TSE and TFE
you would think after ss2 they would stick with what works at the front of the gate but apparently not
>>
>>724923825
BFE has the most methodical enemy placement in teh entire series. i like it being straightforward as opposed to the prior games (outside of 2) because its feasible to play in first person. TFE TSE SS4 basically REQUIRE TPS mode to even be playable since they routinely spawn things from behind and give no spatial awareness mechanic for you to notice them.

there are still enemy types that give you a reason to stop sprinting and engage *all the hitscan enemies*

i also liked to not being locked into an arena for fucking 2 seconds. BFE actually bothered with non linear levels and combat situations. it's ss4/sm that made non linear levels completely meaningless. since most of those levels are empty or devoid of construction or environments other than flat landscapes that you can most zip through by vehicle.
>>
>>724924510
>TFE TSE SS4 basically REQUIRE TPS mode to even be playable
Just turn back? It's not like the teleportation is silent.

But also, you're kind of expected to die occasionally to come up with a strategy. Like with the pill traps, you don't know where the Red Biomech will spawn when you pick the pill up, so you pick it up, die and learn.

But I'm happy you can at least admit SS4 is closer to TFE and TSE in its design than to BFE.
>>
Serious Sam 4 feels like a game so close to changing the formula for the better, but it gets marred by the upgrade tree.
>>
>>724925319
And yet it was hindered by feature-creep and incompetency by their new staff.
Ffs, the level designer worked on Gollum afterwards...
>>
>>724927516
I hope whoever did weapon, enemy and encounter design still work at Croteam.

The only thing that really hindered 4 is how badly they fucked up optimization (probably due to Ladavac leaving, though I wonder what made him drop his company, was it really only a fat Google paycheck) and how bland some of the levels are.
>>
>>724921163

are you fucking smoking crack or some shit it does double damage of rl, and rl is just setup, in no fucking way is dual revolvers is better than gl, rl & tommy gun

siberian mayhem is what ss4 shouldve been from the start

>>
>>724930461
Yeah, never played that personally. Still want to, at some point.
>>
>>724930353
It has its issues but most of the game is still alright, there's a couple great highs and some really bad lows.
>>
>>724930353
It's playable but undercooked as fuck in every regard and filled with questionable design decisions, both in terms of presentation and gameplay.

the presentation is probably my biggest concern from what I've seen, why are they still doing more grounded locations/weapons?
>>
>>724930880
I'm aware that they're mostly just repurposing assets from cancelled projects but I personally like serious sam being a mishmash of goofy and serious with standard military assault rifles existing alongside stuff like the FRPCL
>>
>>724930983
Fair, I prefer how incoherent the guns of the original games are. Hopefully after 2 games that seem to have more realistic guns they can do something a little goofier

Easier to get assets when they don't need any creativity behind them.
The entire penultimate level is a store-bought asset and a wrong one on top of it, with the oil rig actually being an offshore crane.

>>724930353
4 has incredible encounter design, excellent pacing and utterly sublime gamefeel (and also a genuinely good story) but is hampered somewhat by copy-paste level design that very obviously uses marketplace assets and the engine frequently buckling under its own weight.

The granular environmental destruction is also really neat and leads to cool moments.
>>
>>724931223
>locked arena with bulls spawning all around
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, you won't find an encounter like that in BFE (unless we're talking about REALLY BIG open arenas like both spaceship fights).
>>
>>724931223
A good story? I usually don't really pay much attention to what is going on with the games so I'll be interested to check that out
>>
>>724931223
>a genuinely good story

>kill interdimensional demigod and thousands upon thousands of aliens that are taller than houses with rocket launchers, miniguns and cannonballs
