If I have to squeeze through one more tight rock crevice I'm gonna scream
>>
>>724937964
i wanna squeeze through her tight rock crevice if you know what i mean
>>
>>724937964
is there no other way to mask loading screens in games?
>>
>>724938403
i don't, elaborate
>>
>>724938421
climbing sections, underwater pathways, long stretches before a cliff, elevators, large doors all do the same thing but devs use one solution for everything and then complain about how hard innovation is
>>
>>724937964
>play dying light the beast
>slowly shimmy across white paint ledges for 5 minutes while you are a BEAST
it's so tiring
>>
>>724938421
It can also serve as a way to conceal a path

>>724937964
You didn't give a shit when it was elevators
>>
>>724937964
how about instead of hiding a loading screen using the exact same methods....... theres an actual loading screen instead

they are obsolete. this shit was only used for ps4 potato cpu/hdd and now it's used to pad shit game lengths
>>
>>724938550
I prefer going through a crevice over HL2's random loading bullshit
>>
But loading screens BAD, movies don't have loading screens!
>>
>>724938421
Why do they need to be masked?

>>
>>724937964
what was wrong with normal loading screens?
>>

Retarded frogposter.
>>

The PS3 using a 5400RPM hard drive was disappointing.
The PS4 using the same garbage was insulting. Fucking Snoys held us all back like the Microsharts 360 using DVD instead of Bluray.
>>
>>724937964
damn atleast like in skyrim or some shit you could rotate some 3d model in the loadscreen like an autistic handicap to pass the time, that shits kinda cool
>>
>>724938665
Brain rotted zoomers find holding the forward button more engaging than looking at a black screen for a few seconds. I don't even think this is used to mask loading screens anymore. Often you can see that the area in front is already fully loaded. Seems like a bad AAA habit at this point. Or just a trick to get you in the desired spot for a setpiece to happen. Often misused by horror games to squeeze you right next to a scripted scare.
>>
>>724938631
If graphics weren't growing to fit their tank, we wouldn't have this problem.
>>
>>724938536
Elevators at least in ME usually had some conversations or news pieces so you could soak in the SOVL of the worldbuilding. Plus there's something less painful about waiting for a while in an elevator even if it's just elevator music in the background versus hold forward in this totally interactable loading screen tight crevice section.
>>
>>724939149
ME3 having a joke where Garrus says he misses chatting about their lives in the elevator rides was actually funny
>>
>>724938421
You put a loading screen with a Gandhi quote, like in Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2.
>>
>>724937964
DRR... DRR...
>>
I hate it, better hardware in a few years will load it instantly but instead you have to watch stupid animations
bring back loading screens
>>
>>724938421
I'm sure there are other ways, but they take time to create.
Though I think some dev on God of War stated that those were actually to section off fighting locations, not for loading.
>>
>>724937964
i'd rather have these than loading screens. Loading screens are a sign of incompetent lazy devs.
>>
loading screens in the past:
>show artwork, characters, even 3d models you can spin
>provides useful tips and game trivia
>are long enough to read it

or you can ride an elevator or crawl through an ass crack
choose wisely

The purpose is not to mask a loading screen. it's to waste player time and pad out the game.
>>
>>724937964
at some point you have to learn to respect yourself and simply not play games that employ garbage design tropes you loathe
i refuse to play any game with squeeze, yellow paint, etc
stop falling for normie fomo trash and play real stuff

It is for immersion as well retard
Not every path is a straight line with everything open and no obstacles
>>
>>724941581
It's the opposite of immersive, because it's the most obvious fucking gaming contrivance imaginable.
>>
>>724941581
It isn't immersive. It sticks out like a sore thumb.
>>
>>724941581
It would be immersive if one of your characters slipped and fell, and you'd find their corpse down there later.
>>
>>724941581
Not really when a lot of the characters have all sorts of acrobatic or strong feats to simply charge past such obstacles. Most obvious when they won't just kick down a flimsy door.
>>
>>724941581
What's fuckin "immersive" about repeating the exact same thing over and over? It's blatantly covering load times and is no more immersive to me than a smash cut to a black screen with "Loading..." on it.
>>
>>724938454
nutty putty
>>
>>724938421
Games don't even do that anymore but the design stays for some reason. Ghost of Yotei still uses it for no reason even when you can fast travel across the map in like 2 seconds of loading.
>>
>>724941581
>defending this garbage
you're gay
>>
>>724937964
inb4 "it's a loading screen"
>>
I despise all these state changes that lock you into some retarded animation.

It happens even in first person games for >immersion and that's double retarded. I can understand platforming and testing the player's movement skills but when you restrict free movement and tie going through obstacles to prompts and shit like press backspace to climb over fence it just turns into pure waste of time on top of looking ridiculous with enemies around.
>>
>>724941151
>Every single one of these sections combined adds maybe 5 minutes to the entire game in a 50+ hour RPG
>"It's to pad out the game"
Retard

maybe back in the day, when it was used once or twice and it felt like a novelty
Now its common place and DESTROYS immersion.
If anything, I long for a game dev or engine demo that destroy those walls as a mark that we're going to put this technique behind us
>>
