What are we feeling in the mork-o-meter? On the one hand it's obvious he'll rag on it for not playing like ninja Gaiden, for yellow paint, for traversal gimmicks, for walkie talkie sections removing control from the player, for basic skills like wind run being locked to chapter 3, for a highly reduced number of strings, for having fewer weapons available than NGB, for Ryu's chapters being lazy reused segments from Yakumo to the point of repeating the same bosses, for less clean animations, for floaty gameplay where everything is dashing back and forth and flying forward to attack including the player, etc. BUT the game also gigaflopped so his contrarianism might just get the better if him and force him to say a kind word about the game. DMC and God of War (the old ones) were the best selling action games because they had nice gameplay, but more importantly they had settings, characters and stories that drew people into that gameplay.Dante's design is fucking sick and the world of DMC1 looks amazing, Dante vs Vergil in DMC3 is maybe the best vidya rivalry of all time, and Lady is a great character who is both cute and interesting. Then DMC5 is filled to the brim with references and love for those past stories.Every God of War game had brutal executions, sex scenes, cheesy villains hamming it up, Kratos being comically cruel to NPCs for no reason. That stuff draws eyes. Even NG3RE has marketing points like "You can play lots of side content with 3 sexy ninja girls and unlock 4 costumes for each of them, as well as 4 costumes for Ryu". NG4 is just lifeless and has no colour or excitement in its world whatsoever. Seori is the only somewhat cute character and she's only in the game in a handful of cutscenes. Umi, Tyran, Misaki are absolutely nothingburger characters that contribute nothing to the experience and may as well not exist. Yakumo is a crime against character design. Nothing at all happens in the story that would make a Ninja Gaiden fan be excited, and even less so for non-Ninja Gaiden fans.

Just got to Ryu and he fucking sucks. He pauses after every combo leaving himself exposed. Makes him feel incredibly clunky to play. Fucking ruined the game for me especially after the high I got from beating Kagachi. Also two Ryu missions in and it’s just been a rehash of Fagumo’s levels and boss fights but worse. They did not respect Ryu at all in this game. What a fucking joke. Also the story gets worse and worse the more I play it. This game has fun combat as Yakumo but that’s it. That’s all it has going for it.

Most of ryu's good moves before were his forward and running moves asides from shuriken cancels for delimbs which are now redundant with how they designed OTs in 4. Also the equivalent of gleaming blade is dosghit.

It's also important to remember you can use Bloodraven's enhanced block if you can't counter in time, which even I'm bad at remembering, but is a good option when you can't react fast enough since most of the weapons have a slightly delayed output on their Bloodraven attacks. The Rapier is quite good for the fight though; you can use the Spear/Drill mode to kind of "auto-parry" his combos since each tick can parry, and he'll almost always finish with an attack that will get stunned by Bloodraven.

>>724997593I think the game calls it a rapier, if I remember correctly, but in any case, it's the "swift, single target, thrusting" weapon. When I say "ranged," I mean a literal projectile. I don't remember how far it goes but it's enough to cross that whole arena. Distance alone isn't an issue so long as you have enough time to get the attack out. The block is basically your oh-shit option if you can't counter fast enough, and that way you don't take the damage if you miss the timing. Also, if you do a perfect block with it, you get a powerful counter automatically. Dodging does feel more intuitive but it's honestly the less efficient way of playing; I struggle not to dodge myself, coming from the older games, but your block is really strong in this game in terms of number of hits you can take before it breaks.

It's funny watching anons complain about suck to target as a gameplay mechanic instead of complaining about how Platinum uses it as a crutch to avoid having to update their animation design and workflows. Suction only works properly on flat ground. Speeding it up to avoid obvious clipping and potential physics issues is pure laziness. Aside from that, suction is great as a mechanic when hitboxes are kept tight. It's just a matter of letting players easily override it.
