why the hell are people obsessed with the Nemesis patent?
Because it's a neat system that can bring life even to the most soulless slop.
Try Shadow of War out if you haven't. It's very spontaneous and makes the open world feel alive.
it's like when you walk through town and that guy you met at the bookies last month puts his hand up and says AYUP! and you say back to him WAHEY!basic monkey brain stuff
A soulslike with this system would be game of the century and make every other game obsolete
I have no idea.I kept killing things so quick that I never got any use out of it.It basically only existed for me to torture NPCs.
>>724939758same herei killed the captains so quick that they kept respawning carbon copies with identical personalities but different appearancesproblem with copying assassins creed and batman is that those games had been around long enough for any dipshit like ourselves to master them both and trivialize any game that took inspiration from them
>>724939438Patenting gameplay mechanics, any kind, is pretty ridiculous. I don't even think the Nemesis system is particularly great, but you shouldn't be able to make a law blocking others from using it, otherwise you get shit like Nintendo doing just to spite the competition to Pokémon
>>724940879FOR THE LAST TIMETHE PATENT ONLY APPLIES IF YOU LITERALLY UNIRONICALLY AND COMPLETELY LIFT THE ENTIRE FUCKING THING TO THE LETTERYOU CAN'T PATENT>ENEMIES MAY COME BACK WHEN SLAINOR>ENEMIES REMEMBER YOU FROM LAST TIME THEY ENCOUNTERED YOU
>>724939438the idea of patenting a gameplay mechanic at all is scummy, and so people overreacted by imagining OH BUT THE POTENTIAL as if it's not a very specific idea with a very narrow applicationthe fact nobody aped it is not a sign of fear before the lawman, but rather a sign of how nobody could actually make use of that concept>>724941057patents are one part lawfare one part dancing on the line, anybody who could manage to actually lift the thing wholesale and create enough assets to make it work would also be able to defend themselves in court
>>724941057Why patent it in the first place, then? It sounds like it's too specific to be useful, at which point spending money to defend a mechanic no one was in rush to replicate is just a dick move
>>724941057People here are pretending companies patent basic gameplay mechanics because “muh Palworld” Nemesis has to be part of the narrative prease understand
>>724941057>YOYOYO THIS VIDYAGAMS WITH A MECHANIC SIMILAR TO OURS MANAGED TO GET POPULAR, SUE TIME!and they win every time because judges are ignorant cunts
>>724941835>If Patent is broad=Patents are Evil>If Patent is specific=Patents are pointlessIdk what you call this style of argumentation but any retard can see through it
>>724939692It'd be better in a game without shit combat.
>>724939438It's a step forward in procedural story telling, hinting at the possibilities of the medium, and it'll be forever consigned to two middling non-canon LotR games where they failed to utilise their full potential.
>>724939438If the US Patent Office wasn't manned by ignorant lazy retards that cant be arsed to do a bare minimum of due diligence, they'd have denied the patent since Din's Curse is prior art.Same with Namco with its loading screen minigame patent and Astro Marine Corps...
>>724942001Not that guy but... yeah? X-Com 2 had boss enemies that remember you and get bonuses/flaws depending on how you dealt with them. I didn't play Wardor games but it sounds very similiar to nemesis system, so the patent is kinda useless?Whether a patent is being infringed on or not often isn't as obvious as you might think. When it comes to something like gameplay mechanics the law isn't exactly clear cut compared to something obvious like a particular mechanical solution with diagrams etc.
>>724942523>I didn't play Wardor games but it sounds very similiar to nemesis system, so the patent is kinda useless? It’s similar but not the same, it stops companies from stealing your implementation wholesale so no it’s not useless lol
>>724939438Because it makes the game fun.Enemies naturally become things you have a vendetta against. You're not just fighting randomly generated enemy that's weak to fire, you're fighting the enemy who killed you at the start of the game who you beat in your second fight by throwing him through a fire. You have a story with the NPC, it's 1 to 1 and now you're fighting again, he remembers both of these fights too.I'm making an indie game, it's not using the nemesis system but despite that there's still a chance the nemesis patent can screw me over. I'm documenting how my system works precisely because I'd need to prove it's not a copy if I ever got sued over it. In reality I'd just stop selling the game lol.The patent is bullshit. Google it, nemesis system patent and try to understand it. It's purposely vague so that in a court they can use wordplay to win, even if it's not similar. The patent is designed to be hard to understand and hard to avoid. So people just don't make anything similar.
>>724941057The problem is that the patent holder is Warner Bros, a company so vile and abhorrently terrible that they make even Nintendo look benevolent. Nobody wants to even broach the subject of getting into a legal battle with WB, because despite their over a decade of failures they're still propped up by old Hollywood money which can easily sway a judge to siding with them on whatever minor basis they can find.Patent law isn't fucked because of the patents themselves, it's fucked because going to court over a patent is simply a matter of who can pay off the judge more to see things their way.
>>724942523xcom 2 wotc is a joke compared to the wardor nemesis system
>>724942748Nobody is going to buy your platformer 'indie' trash so it doesn't matter.
>>724939438It's a cool system that breathes longevity into an otherwise repetitive game. It being locked behind an intellectual copyright is the same as Nintendo winning their 'capturing monsters' claim.
Not even the nemesis system could keep me engaged in the game after a few hours of playing. Combat is a mindless button masher and "stealth" is a joke. Environment is uninspired brown or green ruin. And the enemies are everywhere not giving you a slight moment of peace. The game even has ubisoft towers...
>>724939438>why do people like fun thingsi don't know anon trully a mystery
>>724941057hey gay retard are you aware that any company with a patent will abuse it and sue anyone with a similar concept and win
>>724941057Wait that's the nemesis mechanic? That sounds boring as fuck why do people care?
>>724941057The systems separate are worthless though. The point is putting them together.
>>724945265it's way more fun than anon is describing really having a opponent that develops more naturally insted of being forced by writers can be fun
>>724939692How would it work in a Soulslike game?
>>724939438>>724941057>bro just copyYeah, right retard, why would other devs try to reinvent the wheel when the nemesis patent exists, which is the culmination of 2 mordor games and fucking works (tm)?It would all be fixed if WB licenses to devs but this isn't a perfect world so the patent is pretty locked till it expires
>>724939438>why the hell are people obsessed with the Nemesis patent?is cool
>>724941057You can wiggle your way around it, but I reckon most devs just don't want to risk facing an army of angry lawyers in case they fuck up something.
