I really don't think the companions will make much difference outside of certain story exposition areas. Metroidvanias have always had the issue of feeling like the gameplay is too uneventful so they have to balance the exploration with story exposition. Though if they're always jabbering about where to go and what to do that would be annoying especially for a game like this.
