an overworld in Metroid "could" have worked, but before you eviscerate me, there's a couple major caveats- First there still needed to be traditional metroid areas, underground, in mountains, in a giant tree or city or whatever with multiple entrances and exits to discover, and said areas needed to be interconnected somehow- Secondly the overworld needed to be dense, no long travel times, just a continuous but changing environment filled with small areas to discover as well as the entrances to the actual metroid areas- Third, it needed to be alien, truly alien, the best case scenario of a metroid overworld would have been a truly alien forest, filled with ruins of an ancient civilization and crashed ships littered, with maybe a mountain at the center with something weird going on like anti-gravity flying islands or soBasically, make the overworld a semi-optional area you can explore, scan wildlife in, find secrets and just have fun in, the forest was an idea because it would allow good use of Samus's mobility to traverse, upgrading with wall jumps, grapple beam, screw attack, speed booster etc
