The term "video essay" is just an excuse to waste your time. If someone isn't explicitly claiming to review a game then don't bother watching. You can find any information they're going to cite in their bloated "essay" by using wikipedia.The problem with a critique of art is that most people dont know how to do it properly. 99% of professional reviewers you'll find on youtube will spend the entire time talking about how they personally didn't like and what they think should have happened instead. How they (no qualifications and unaccomplished) would have done it. Doesn't matter if it's film, books or videogames, it's like this everywhere.Personal opinion has its place and should be included, but to actually critique a work is to examine it from the perspective of the artist who made it. Why did they include this? What were they trying to accomplish? Does it remind you of other works they could have been inspired by? Is there any interesting history there? THEN you can begin a critique and actually muse on whether you think they were succesful at what they were aiming for. Instead of approaching it by thinking that the creator is also a dumb lazy retard like yourself, assume everything is intentional because on some level it probably is.
