I'm gonna be completely real. Nintendo never understood the appeal of Metroid. Super was a fluke. Everything after it was, "welllll, we need to give people more guidance. More structure." Or "We should try more narrative." Which led to Prime 3 and, of course, Other M. For god's sake, they were shook and surprised at the reaction to Federation Force 10 years ago. They do not, and have not had a strong, conscious understanding of what this franchise is, and I think a notable amount of people within the company don't want to understand, because Metroid doesn't fit within Nintendo's image.
