Speedrunning is low tier entertainment. Something you can watch, but it's really not that fun. What is fun is watching how people come up with new ways to push a game to its limits, pretty much regardless of what game it is. Sly has insane innovative glitches, Halo has masterfully skillful tricks you can do, and semi-related but I just recently saw a FFXIV glitch video where the player can manipulate the failsafe respawn mechanic (game trying to spawn you when you somehow rape your spawn point and it doesn't know where to spawn you, people figured out how to break the built-in backup spawner) to respawn at any coordinates on the map that they want to glitch out of the map. Just watching people break a game is quite entertaining. But then proceeding to spend the next 1,000 hours doing the same tricks over and over again is boring as shit. Just a single speedrun video is enough for me showing me all the tricks in the game.

Speed running is such a strange interest and I can't imagine what compels people to do it. You're ignoring everything that makes the game its own unique and immersive experience and may as well be arbitrarily interfacing with code on a screen like in The Matrix. When I play a game I want to experience the game, in its completeness, including all the challenges, the failures, the successes, the sound, the imagery, and the story, as intended. Removing all of that and stripping it down to how quickly and accurately I can input arbitrary button combinations to "win" the game seems like something that would be empty and pointless, to an even greater extent than video games generally are. It would be like playing Stepmania all day except without any music. It's an exhibition of skill and practice, sure, and I guess some people find entertainment in that alone, I just can't imagine what it feels like to be one of those people.
How do you think speedrunners feel when they grind a game for thousands of hours only for a random exploit to be found that invalidates all their hard work?
