The first game's limited mobility led to combat encounters being more strategic and puzzle-like. You had to pick the right weapon for the job, or else you're going to eat shit. In the sequels, weapon selection means nothing thanks to strafing removing the need for careful positioning and every weapon can now be used in every encounter carelessly.

Enemies and their unique distinctions mattered more in 1, like for example the claw monsters on orxon which necessitates a close quarters weapon, you try to blatser you'll have a way harder time, there's lots of varied enemies which force you to adapt in conjunction with Ratchets more restrictive movement means you have to utilize more niche weapons sometimes.

Remember, making more accessible controls does not automatically equate to a better game.

1 is easily the best. 2 is an identity crisis but with overall great production value and great variety in scenery and atmosphere. 3 is that same production value with utterly dogshit production value, boring environments, zero atmosphere, and overall quality sacrificed for a multiplayer framework that nobody gave a shit about. Gladiator is the polar opposite of 1, but without the issue of not knowing what it wants to be. It's focused and does what it set out to do well, unlike 2 and 3. Still, that something just happens to be a bland third person co-op shooter.

The first 3 games are equally good and I do have a soft spot for the very first one. I prefer Ratchet voiced by a nigga, and the Chairman Drek plot is awesome. It felt more like an adventure game before the guns came too much into focus, but conversely I also love that about the 2 next games.

But Tools of Destruction is where it died. The new writing by a "TJ Fixman" is literal Hannah Montana humor. Before then it was more like Ed Edd n Eddy, where it's "for children" but a lot of it is such a culture parody that you get to laugh with it as a grown-up too, and highly stereotyped "offensive" characters, and a lot of jabbing at MTV-culture, and commercialism in general.

Starting with ToD they lost the satire, and became "LOL, SO RANDOM" for little babies, and tiptoeing around "potentially offensive" stereotypes. That's when woke-liberalism had taken over, and I quickly noticed something felt off about it. After Crack in Time I gave up on the series. I wondered how people kept talking about how it was "the best one" but didn't notice the tone was completely gone.

Then years later TGBS made a video about it and that's literally the first time I felt like someone who wasn't me pointed it out.

I've started doing playthroughs where I skip weapons, this year I skipped the blaster and taunter, 80% of encounters are easily done with the bomb glove.

Also you're completely forgetting that R&C does have a strafe mode, you just unlock it on Hoven instead of it always being available.

Last year I played Rift Apart for the first time, it doubles down on all the things you say strafing "ruined" or "removed".

I dunno I think strafing would've been fine if the game kept the more specialized weapon design and also retained the split focus of the platforming/combat sections of the games. each game turned more and more into shooters and weapons turned more and more into playthings you pick by preference and not tools you use because they fit the job at hand. you're blaming an ok system for the team shifting their entire level and enemy design philosophy

Wow really? I could swear they were default for all the PS3 titles but I haven't played them in quite awhile, probably not gonna replay them any time soon though because they stunk
