A FPS and 3D platformer of its quality was really ground breaking for the time, but game design has improved considerably since then. A game like it today would feel like a joke. It has no story and the entire game is just going from location to location defeating enemies and solving puzzles to collect power ups. The interconnected map was cool, but it was really just a few areas connected by elevators with no easy way to get from one end of the map to the other. The backtracking is brutal especially towards the end of the game when you are done getting new gadgets and have to go on a stupid fetch quest to get Chozo artifacts to wrap it up.The developers understood the flaws and more or less addressed them with Metroid Prime 2, which was objectively a better game by most metrics. It all went to shit with Metroid Prime: Wii when they tried to make it more "cinematic" and incorporate the motion control gimmicks at the expensive of exploration and level design. That game is linear and boring with cringe voice acting and no rewarding puzzles or bosses.
