If they wanted to make a VR headset for people to play their regular games as well as VR games, then why didn't they make their controller able to snap together to become a regular controller for VR?

Because the new Steam Controller already does that and also has tracking from the headset.
>>
Sounds kinda pointless when that would just make a normal Steam Controller, plus split controllers like joycons are popular
>>
Why do you need the controllers touching to be able to use them?

Extra immersive when playing porn games.

because if you want to use a regular controller while wearing a VR headset, you can.

They should have made the new Steam Controller able to split in two to become VR controllers.

They are unfortunately trying to go for peak "normalfag whose only computing device is a phone and whose only display is probably a TV", because the alternative is that they avoided getting pushed out of the market by Windows only to get exiled by the fact that everyone only plays phoneslop.
This normalfag appeal requires a unibody controller, featureless black cubes and d-pads, and is overall more sterile than a clean room trying to send an immunocompromised patient into space
