How come no one ever talks about this game (or games like it) anymore? This specific game scared the absolute fuck out of me in 2012.

Nothing has ever been nearly as scary since then, other than the one midpoint section in Half Life Alyx. Maybe I just got desensitized to it.

I think every game that tried to emulate the first Amnesia just went the machine for pigs walking simulator route. Even Frictional did, until The Bunker.
>>
>>725972767
you mean in that the games are way too linear? It's been a bit but I feel like even the original DD was linear too, even if it occasionally felt like it wasn't.
>>
people discovered penumbra black plague which is objectively and subjectively better
>>
>>725972189
>Nothing has ever been nearly as scary since then
White Day remake was scarier even though the original is way scarier than that

Cause you were like 10
>>
>>725972882
That and I feel stripping the games out of the resource management aspect makes these style of games less scary overall. There's no tension whatsoever.
>>
>>725972964
This
Penumbra Overture with Black Plague are much more heart pounding and it's not a contrarian opinion, Amnesia was just common slop for commoners and stuck better with people
SOMA is their greatest game but its not the same as these
>>
never played this game but the voice actor for daniel was my high school chemistry teacher. instantly recognized the voice from some lets plays
>>
>>725973443
I think soma has their best story. i found too many sections to linear, too many hide and seek shit, too much crouching behind chest high walls, etc. just felt phoned in, too short and overpriced (i bought it day 1 like a retard)
>>
>Nothing has ever been nearly as scary since then
You are joking, right
>>
>>725973303
but how else will devs and publishers cater to le heckin mainstream audiences???
>>
>>725972189
Because every horror game for years copied their style, even Kojima with PT
>>
>>725972189
try VR horror
>>
>>725972189
The extremely obvious despawning mechanics made the game too vidya-like and therefore less immersive and spooky. Otherwise, it’s a memorable classic.
>>
>>725972189

I played the entire franchise recently.

Bunker > Dark Descent > Rebirth >>>>>>>> garbage >>>>>> Machine for Pigs

Dark Descent is alright, slow and not too scary but it had the right idea and feel, i hate the alien shit. Bunker was KINOOO

>How come no one ever talks about this game (or games like it) anymore?
Because it's 16 years old, AND it was utter shit.
Massive DOWNGRADE from the Penumbra ep1-2.

And now every single horror game is a similar Twitch-streamer-bait run & hide jumpscare fest.
>>
>>725972189
What is there to talk about? It's not like there are any mechanics to discuss or much detailed lore. Which isn't a bad thing for the kind of game it is, but it doesn't give you a lot to yap about.

How many people have ever tried any of the custom stories people make for Amnesia? A year or two ago I played a bunch of them. It surprised me that a few managed to add pretty functional boss fights. Kinda makes me think it was a missed opportunity in the original game not to make the encounter with Alexander more of a boss fight. Not using a weapon of course, I mean a puzzle boss. I guess you could say it would seem gamey or could be frustrating but I think it was worth trying.

Penumbra 1 is complete trash lmao
>>
>>725979238
Fuck off ya cumrag. You were not even alive when the game came out.

Penumbra Overture alone BTFO anything Frictional has shat out since then. And Black Plague absolutely dwarfs their later shit.
>>
>>725979423
> Throw meat at boring non scary dogs and walk walk walk
lmaoooo
You're trying so hard at your "old good, new bad" grifter persona.
>>
>>725979613
Still better than "walk into an empty room, one (1) oogabooga babby's first Blender sculpt monster spawns, sit in a dark corner and wait until it despawns" that is Amnesia.

Amnesia was a fucking devastating disappointment already day 1. I was actually there, waiting for that shit with /v/ buddies.
>>
>>725972189
Frictional games stuff was more scary than any Silent Hill games imo
Like at least from all the Penumbra games to the Dark Descent. All top tier horror. And The Bunker lately has been a good return to form for them. If you love the Dark Descent then you need to play all of the top community mods and total conversions because there are many worth trying. If you love Amensia TDD then I suggest also checking out an indie game called Caput Mortum. I think you'll like it. It's like some weird mix of kings field/arx fatalis in themes with Amnesia.

>slop mania: slopping it up
it's so tiresome
>>

I think Layers of Fear 1 and 2 are better
>>
>>725972189
Walking simulators kind of died as a genre. The Outlast games were good then they turned the franchise into multiplayer slop.
>>
>>725973443
People can knock Soma for its lack of actual gameplay and I wouldn't argue, but god damn was it ever an experience.
>>
>>725981441
1 yes, not 2
>>
>>725982178
Soma is an excellent sci-fi game but an average horror game imo.
>>
>>725982178
>>725983207
ending ruined the whole game to me, made it a 2/10 for what was initially 8
>>
Recently beat SOMA. It was pretty decent. Though the constant “uhh… well, THAT just happened!” tier writing throws me out of it so much. Wish Simon and Catherine didn’t talk so fucking much. Amnesia TDD and AMFP has a lot of talking, sure, Catherine just buzzes around your ear way too fucking much, which is ironic because she’s described as “shy and quiet”.
Other than that, the game was really good. Basically Amnesia TDD all over again but set in the future. Grim setting and plot too. Yeah, it’s “easy” and borders on “walking simulator” but I was still freaked out by it.
Need to play The Bunker next. I bought it but I just wasn’t in the mood for horror games at the time so I pussied out right at the beginning
>>
>>725978318
Fuck off, A Machine for Pigs was decent. Not half as good as TDD but still decent on its own
>>
>>725983547
Really? Why? I did find Simon’s random outrage at Catherine a bit unexpected, you’d think he’d already know what was gonna happen considering what happened to him not once but twice. But the ending was fine overall
>>
>>725972767
I am still so salty about machine for pigs. It was fine, but I couldn't believe it when I actually beat the whole game in one sitting. Amnesia had me stressed out for months in high school trying to beat it and I just straight up couldn't believe I one shotted the sequel like that. So disappointed, never got lost or trapped or anything. The pigs were cool but they were so easy to just run around. Absolute travesty.
>>
>>725972189
because literally everyone and their grandma played it
it also ruined horror games
>>
>>725983725
> The walking sim with no gameplay no inventory no enemies no nothing is "decent"

LMAOOOO
>>
>>725972189
Because that kind of horror game is gay and boring. Your character is a weak faggot bitch who starts hyperventilating if he's more than 10 seconds away from a closet to hide in. The challenge comes from simple puzzles and resource management. Horror games that mix in action while still keeping the character weak and vulnerable are much better. Hell even action games with a spooky vibe that try to scare you every once in a while are better.
