I don't think World of Warcraft has captured any significant number of new players since Cataclysm killed the golden goose that was the Vanilla leveling experience. WoW stopped growing at that point, and every expansion sense has been an attempt to re-capture the ever-dwindling existing playerbase.

Obviously a dying game that is part of a dying genre filled with nothing but old holdouts who can't let go is going to have an older audience.I think FFXIV briefly bucked this trend, but only by artificially creating MCU-style hype around it and, like the MCU, convinced Zoomies to consume the fucking slop so they could be "in the conversation" about it. The whole thing crashed and burned the moment they weren't able to sustain the hype bubble and the playerbase had to contend with the fact that the game itself was abysmal dogshit.
