>>725978952Fuck Rockstar shillYour shitty openworls game can't surpass HL3's glory
>>725978937Without sounding like too much of a faggot I really like the way people have started to characterise gordon as a fundamentally tragic, melancholic character. I find replaying the games much more poignant (and particularly Black Mesa, which actively leans into these themes) when I picture things this way. Vidrel https://youtu.be/mXCx50yaseA
>>725979096saw someone make a good guess that it'll presumably be identical to gamecube specspersonally I'm just praying to god almighty that my 5 year old rtx 2070 graphics card can run it (I'm cooked)
>>725979181The man hasn't slept since he woke up to go to work that one morning. The happiest he's been was probably when Alyx hugged him.
>>725979181The fact that he's silent is what allows for these compelling headcanons. just important to remember.
>>725979181https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CY7BJ_RoyhE&t
Gordon should never speak. That way he can be a PTSD driven tragic character AND an asshole who explodes casseroles and throws glass bottles and chinese takeaway boxes at people for no reason at the same time.
>>725979096I don't see Valve not making it run on Deck. If your PC is better than that, you'll be fine.
>>725979181I've always thought Gordon might be a psychopath mercenary, or very emotionless at least.
>>725979524Gordon's personality is supposed to be (you)
>>725979181I like to image him as the kind of guy who is hoping for a cataclysmic event so he can indiscriminately murder people since he was bullied all his life, even in black mesa since they forced him into the gimp suit to push a cart while xrays cook his balls despite being a MIT graduate.
Gordon...
>>725979732Honestly being the trusted test guy wearing the suit probably worth a few million dollars would be potentially a pretty envious position.
>>725979363I'm well aware, and I sincerely hope valve keeps things this way. the magic of half life is that everyone can have their own gordon freeman, and the fact interpretations of freeman's psychology ranging from freeman's mind to the video I linked can still coexist is brilliant. I sincerely hope valve doesn't have gordon speak, but if he does, they better make it count. Otherwise as it happens this particular canon (freeman as the tragic victim of fate) is the one I choose to go with.>>725979354not to mention the motherfucker has been hopped up on absurd quantities of deep-state-grade morphine and amphetamines via the HEV suit for what amounts to a week straight with a short break during HL2's intro. The other version of freeman I like is the one where he's simply been too wired to even begin to process the insane shit he's been through, at least until he comes down lmao.
>>725979853*and the fact thatapologies I'm drinking so there may be typos
>Gordon blows up a guys casserole and triggers the alarm to fuck around with his coworkers for no reason.>Gordon has a very serious moment where he protects his coworkers from horrific zombie monstrosities and alien parasitic face huggers>Gordon randomly presses every button on the vending machine and drinks 5 soda cans in 20 seconds. All in an hour.

>>725979954>Gordon blows up a guys casserole and triggers the alarm to fuck around with his coworkers for no reason.See ordinarily that'd be pretty annoying but imagine how it must be from Magnusson's perspective. Because of that, he probably just had to get something small from a vending machine. Then suddenly the apocalypse happens and instead of having had a filling meal, he has to escape with far less energy than he otherwise could've had
>HL3 will be announced before we get HLVRAI2Don't get me wrong, HLVRAI wasn't the best thing in the world, but it was moderately entertaining and I'd like to see more
>>725980136Maybe Magnuson didn't have breakfast that morning and was REALLY looking forward to that casserole. I would be pissed off if some 27 year old lab assistant purposely blew up my fucking casserole. What an asshole.
>>725980101nigga you're setting yourself up to consume both a pair of jeans and two pounds worth of ink paper by the end of the week
>>725979853I dunno, I always interpreted it that Gordon doesn't really give a shit about the drama happening around him, sort of a dual tragic aspect, like Eli and Alyx really think Gordon is on their side and their friend but maybe he really doesn't give a shit and is just doing the job Gman is giving him. But having multiple possible interpretations is probably what makes it good anyways.

>>725980771You jest but I'd be curious to ask you /v/aggots, what do you actually imagine half life 3 looking like? The cheap answer is the plot from laidlaw's epistle 3, but I think valve is gonna shelve that stuff - after all, epistle 3 was really more of a metaphor for the (at the time) perceived death of hope for a 3rd episode ever releasing mixed in with laidlaw's lore notes than a concrete plot for a game. Personally, I think it's gonna be some balls to the walls insanity where gordon kills the gman with a fucking crowbar
>>725980956Ep2 was much better. HL2 has some pacing issues but it was decent enough.

I wonder how many of the Half-Life VAs died between Episode 2 and now
>>725983197>>725983329I honestly like Xen being long. The entire game is basically building up to it with the cool aliens making you wonder where they came from. Then you finally get to go there and it's just over in like 30 minutes in the original. Black Mesa Xen feels like a lone expedition into an alien world, while HL1 Xen is basically a platforming section.
>>725983290I liked that it kept as much of the original 1:1 as possible whilst also adding in a whole bunch of lore and themes that makes it flow much smoother into half life 2 and the episodes - the greater emphasis on the tragedy of the situation, the greater detail about the vortigaunt's position in xen, even just the way you see that map of the milky way on your way to kill the nihilanth, it felt like doing justice to the original from the perspective of HL2, and I really appreciated that.
all i want for cridmud is half life 3https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1KfJEM8tsU
>>725983671I agree with you anon, but I do think that the interloper segment specifically drags on way too long as far as gameplay is concerned. just endless conveyor belt / button puzzles for what feels like hours. everything other than that, exactly as you said, it feels like it does justice to xen and fully explores all of its details and complexities, like the vortigaunt village. And as I keep repeating, my god the soundtrack is incredible. by the time you're fighting the nihilanth it almost outshines half life 2 and its episodes with how fucking cinematic it all is.

>>725981028Epistle Three was never meant to be a serious plot outline for Half-Life 2 Episode Three by anyone, not even Marc Laidlaw. While it was based on various plot beat ideas he'd played with many years ago, Half-Life 2 Episode Three was abandoned only about 6 months in and never got far along enough to try to organize those plot beat ideas into a plot outline. Based on Marc Laidlaw's later comments of regret on the matter, it's likely that he literally wrote Epistle Three right before posting it as a spontaneous emotional act.>>725981109Epistle Three had absolutely zero bearing on the writing of Half-Life Alyx. The only reason that Alyx involved undoing the end of Episode Two was because of an elevator conversation between Erik Wolpaw and Jim Murray where Murray just randomly threw the idea out there after Erik Wolpaw explained that he and the other writers were completely stuck on having the end of the game have meaningful consequences.

Black Mesa devs missed the point, made it far too fuckin long and then also added 6 gorillion plug puzzles

>>725979570he's just a highly trained professional
>>725982983>(confirmed)
Black Mesa Xen was only long if you play the entire game in one go. Most of us waited nearly a decade for it to release and it was essentially a different game altogether which is what made it great. It does drag on for too long if you're playing the entire game in one go though.
I hate BMs Xen but I will give them some points too. I liked the lab section and the Vortigaunt village. Controllers actually controling our galanga bros was a nice touch too
I don't think the problem with Xen was that it was "rushed," at least based on how Brett Johnson, the main level designer behind Xen, talked about it. A lot of stuff in Half-Life was built incredibly quickly. The Resonance Cascade sequence was built almost entirely in one weekend by two level designers. Stuff was being done incredibly quickly. The problem with Xen was more that it was almost entirely being worked on by only one level designer, because all the other level designers were moved to working on multiplayer. Every other part of Half-Life besides Xen had at least two level designers making big contributions to add variety and more play testing.Dario Casali recalls that he was originally supposed to have worked on Xen but was instead moved to multiplayer since he had the most multiplayer map experience.
>>725978503I am so ready bros
>>725994297>>725994338Black Mesa’s Xen was still really good but yeah, the original Half Life Xen was far superior. The vibes were something else. So utterly alien. >>725994631>they decided to make it low gravity after most of the levels were finalizedinsane
>>725982926I hate what it's done to me. Once you experience it, suddenly 1 doesn't look nearly as big anymore. The dam in 1 has like 3 guys on it, in Black Mesa it's massive. Forget about Freeman has 2 guys next to a tank, there's a whole onslaught in Black Mesa. Everything's like that, things are just disappointingly small if you go back. And yet Black Mesa lacks that charm that HL1 has so it ends up where neither experience is good enough.

>>726022725neat, although part of me has always found the notion of a newspaper even being publishable kind of absurd, like how are you getting the infrastructure to write, print, and distribute a newspaper when fucking food and water isn't being passed around? How are you contacting all these high profile academics and officials for comment when entire countries are cut off from outside communication due to the effects of the war? Most interestingly, this confirms in canon that the seven hour war happened very rapidly after the black mesa incident - a lot of speculation placed a much longer gap between the two, e.g. one of videos in this >>726022198

>>726023639I don't think the Combine specifically targeted every printing press on earth.Second, the news/media becomes a Combine propaganda mill after they took over so they'd have a vested interest in keeping it working.
>>725987196I believe they'll keep the Dynson Sphere reveal along with it being a bleak hopless realization, but it won't end with that. Epistle 3 has the vorts save Gordon and then the letter switches to talking about Valve and how things have changed, but I think it'll be some sort of resistence on the dyson sphere that you get saved by instead and then the last act of the game is about fighting to destroy the sphere
>>725981564I think about that time when Mike talked about how time is fluid for G-man so he might find something funny about a future event he is witnessing and chuckle in the present moment. Makes me wonder how much he was told about the character.
>>726023639The Combine would've learned very quick that keeping some of the information infrastructure up, like newspapers, is going to benefit them when it comes to installing their puppet government and spreading their propaganda. Only giving away controlled information and things that are necessary to know for them, hence the lack of info on stock markets and things us see as critical to society.

>>726023639as the other guy noted the combine are really cool with just how frugal they are, just utilizing pre-existing human tech and cheap labour to get whatever job done and the even more neat part is the occupying force is a garrison at best. >>726024010>They literally just use XenI don't think that's correct, the Combine DON'T use Xen afaik. Black Mesa specifically used Xen as a relay/slingshot for local teleportation, local teleportation being something the Combine aren't capable of, which implies they don't use Xen as a medium. They simply used the already raging portal storm on Earth as a way in, and then they build Citadels as permanent connection points between dimensions. While Black Mesa dips into another dimension (Xen) and then back into their local dimensionIt's fucked when you think about how cumbersome and inefficinet their teleportation tech is, and then Aperture made a fucking handheld wormhole device, lmao. They had a raging hardon for Black Mesa tech, which in and of itself was primitive compared to Aperture. I wonder if they even know about the portal device

Bros...I think I believe.
>>726025034someone should bake a new one
>>726024865I mean the portal gun isn't perfect either, you need direct line of sight to each endpoint if you're using the gun, or, if you're using a stationary portal projector it needs to be mounted to a flat surface coated with the appropriate conductor material. If they solved that (especially needing lunar regolith-based paint) the stationary portal projector would have been revolutionary. Instantaneous travel between two paired sets of projectors. The gun less so, though I guess there's potentially some novel applications for it.

>>726025034In the meantime, this is where I get off.

>>726024865>local teleportation being something the Combine aren't capable of, which implies they don't use Xen as a medium. They simply used the already raging portal storm on Earth as a way inThe eponymous portals are Xen portals. The other side of them is Xen. Meaning that if the Combine came through the portals they went through Xen. Xen is a place between places where it’s implied normal laws of space and time don’t apply. So, while point to point teleports are impossible in “realspace,” Xen allows sentients to first enter from real space and then exit in the real space of another universe.Even Kleiner’s teleporter (and the Borealis possibly) still uses Xen as a middle point but it’s instantaneous and therefore practically* point-to-point. Xen is left almost entirely unexplained but we can reason there is some sort of “universal correspondence plane” where portals to different universes have specific measurable coordinates so that you can enter and exit the same universe repeatedly. The portals themselves correspond to the homeworlds of sentient species because the portals have to first be created on the real space side by facilities such as Black Mesa.
>>726025034
>>726025228Aperture is also furiously retarded in the management department, I'm sure CJ told them to make it a "gun" because it was cooler than some faggot nerd shit like stationary portal projectors. Nevertheless, it still contains a black hole. It's magic compared to other tech in the setting

>>725978740TWENTY SECONDS
>>726023797>>726023923that's actually a pretty good point, I hadn't thought of that. I do still think though that by this point in the story the combine's only just figured out how to COMMUNICATE with us mere hours prior, nor had they really figured out what they wanted to do with us, so I don't think it's realistic to say that they would've deliberately kept our media infrastructure intact to enable a propaganda effort later, rather that they figured that out later on. In general it'd be nice to have some kind of clarity on what the seven hour war actually involved in terms of destruction, on the one hand you've got reports of food and water shortages, untold dead, cities wracked by portal storms and whatnot, and then you've also got newspapers able to contact people for comment and pop singers organising concerts (and working television broadcasts on a large scale).

>>726025520I think you're making too many assumptions about the combine here. We know they found earth specifically because the resonance cascade was the dimensional equivalent of lighting a flare, and then exploited the fragile gaps between our reality and others during the portal storms to enter. We also know that they knew of Xen, since the Nihilanth fled from the combine and ended up there in hiding. We have no reason to believe that Xen is their primary method for accessing other worlds. Their teleportation tech is shown punching holes directly from one reality to another via a massive expenditure of energy, and that's how I always assumed they did things.
