Why does Gabe hate Windows so much?
>>
He worked for them and made merely a few millions dollars
>>
because he worked at microsoft
>>
>>725979089
It's not that he hates Windows, he just doesn't make money from it
It's the reason steam even exists
He admitted he made steam solely to stop people being able to trade/resell copies of HL2 when they were done with it. To use it, you have to use an account tied to your email

Same reason he's making a Linux console, so you're 'locked in' to steam primarily

Windows is an operating system made by low-IQ pajeets who lack Western concepts pertinent to good engineering, such as standards, attention to detail, and quality assurance. This has always been the case, but it's become worse over the past ten years as Microsoft has been replacing actual talented Western workers with overseas outsourced labor, some of which, at the time of hire, have never used an actual computer before.

Source: various ex-Microsoft-employees in my social and professional circle whose stories independently corroborate the details of each others' stories.

>However, he added, the openness that helped Valve as well as firms such as Google and Zynga could disappear with Windows 8.

>"There's a strong temptation to close the platform," he said, "because they look at what they can accomplish when they limit the competitors' access to the platform, and they say, 'That's really exciting.'"

>This is seen by commentators, external to be a reference to the inclusion of a Windows Store in the Microsoft operating system.

>This is a shop through which users will be able to buy apps for their Windows 8 device.

>On versions of Windows 8 designed to run on ARM-based chips, it will be the only way to get downloadable software such as games.

>Microsoft takes a cut, up to 30%, of every sale made through this store, similar to that taken by Apple, Google and others on existing mobile app markets.

>This could be a significant threat to the massively successful Steam online game store that Valve runs and which gives it a commission on every title sold through the online market.

>A Windows Store closed to everyone but Microsoft might reduce the range of games available for sale through Steam.

Mini pc is unironically the future right now.
Zoomers are now interested in playing retro or cartoon looking vidya - something that even some ryzen igpu can run in ultra 120fps something without glowing gaming rigs and $3000 memecard - instead of rtx realistic shit slop.
People saw how meme 4090 was back in the day and now they prefer portability like handheld, vita, laptop, including mini pc.

It's aimed at people who have fucking clue about Windows or Linux and just want 'le gaming pc'

>>

APU are just getting to the point where they are really insanely over powered for the size and watts. Yes, strix halo is overpriced but it's equivalent to 4070 and has 32gb minimum of shared ram and vram built in to the chip itself. Data centers want GPUs not GPUs and CPUs integrated so the AI/crypto market can't swoop in and eat up the supply. In a couple years if you don't want to pay for the high end cards stuff like Strix on mini pc will be the best option.

Steamdeck was 100% open and the entire point was to compete in an already chaotic market with chinese handhelds
It was also not sold at a loss

The actual Linux console they'll sell is going to be about 100-200 dollars cheaper than it's market value
The reason for this is to make it more appealing and it'll be treated as a console instead of PC. Shit like 'virus free, oficial free steam support' etc is going to be used
The steam deck was just trying to test to see if people would prefer Windows on it and people didn't

It's the same shit with the Linux console
People are jsut incapable of understanding basic strategy of marketing and selling

This guy gets it, though obviously exaggerated.
Adding non Steam games to the deck interface sucks, contrast this with the Xbox app that now automatically adds non Xbox games to itself.

It's worth mentioning that the steamOS desktop is probably the worst example of a Linux desktop session right now, which is a concern with all the fanbois hyping it up setting themselves up for disappoinment
tl;dr
>Huge Linux gaming fan excited to try it for the first time
>>
He probably used it.
Imagine being Gabe, an ex-Microsoft employee who helped with the creation of Windows, and seeing what modern Microsoft is like.
You'd have to be fucking deranged to not hate what Microsoft has become over the years, they've been pretty cancerous since the late 90s, it just became unbearable on the consumer side some time in the last decade where they made it obvious that they also want to assfuck their customers alongside their competitors.
>>
>>725984035
>have a problem? Jsut contact Valve direct and we can help
retards/soccer moms don't want to go online and troubleshoot. if the machine doesn't work they want to go back to the store they bought it from and return it.
>>
>>725984290
>Adding non Steam games to the deck interface sucks, contrast this with the Xbox app that now automatically adds non Xbox games to itself.
The Xbox app is a buggy piece of shit, while with the 'eck I can literally just add games to Steam the same way I do on my PC, then they'll show up in the non-Steam games tab in the gaming interface.
>>
>>725984290
SteamOS isn't actually that pad for adding in new games to me
I didn't find ithard setting up Retroarch but I'm used to computers.
I think the biggest problem is going to be the split that comes with people familiar with computers and want it as acomputer replacement vs people who want it solely as a linux console

>>725984316
You'd think that. Retards like this just want to be heard

Yes, I know. I'm an EUfag. I'm aware that shops are responsible. They aren't required to issue a refund on the spot because you're a retard, tho. That's the point. They will 'fix it' in so much as send it back to Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo and tell you to fuck off for a few months

Really? I've never used the deck but on normal steam it's literally just a menu option, you go games>add non steam game, navigate to the executable and that's it
and proton is just fully open anyway so even if you don't want to use steam you can still use all the same runners with Lutris or whatever else you want. They put a ton of work into improving Wine and gaming on linux got massively better ridiculously quickly and they put literally zero effort into preventing you from just taking advantage of all of their work without ever interacting with their ecosystem or giving Gaben a cent.
Like yeah Gabe obviously wants you to use Steam and spend money on their store and they are doing all this work so they aren't shackled to Windows in the future and want to secure their market position against Microsoft's constant attempts to force people into exclusively using their store and shit, but it is kind of insane that they're also just letting anyone else use all this shit for free. The only reason you can't play fucking Fortnite on steam and give Tim your money instead is because they artificially block linux users from connecting to their servers. Everything else, even the anticheat would work and Valve would let you if they could.

Violent offenders should not own guns. Police should use racial profiling. There is an IQ disparity between the races. Whites deserve their own countries like everyone else. Anyone attempting to cross a border illegally should be shot for trespassing. Politicians advocating for open borders should be hanged for treason. Womens suffrage is the worst thing to happen to human civilization. Am I woke too? Does this break your brain?
>>
>>725984290
>Adding non Steam games to the deck interface sucks
It even creates a protonprefix for you and makes it as compatible out of the box as possible. The only possible issue is that it doesn't have "add non-steam game" in deck UI, but then again you have to download it somehow, so if you're trying to run a non-steam game, you had to open desktop mode anyway to download it. If they wanted to fuck you over, you'd be creating proton environment for your non-steam games yourself.
>>
For anyone who hasn't used a deck (or something similar like bazzite) and is getting confused by this thread: SteamOS has two modes.
>gaming mode
You have the Steam UI and you have the game (if any), and you have nothing else. You can do everything with a controller. Very console-like.
>desktop mode
You get a KDE desktop, which looks/feels/behaves a lot like Windows. In this mode, Steam is just an application like any other, and the same goes for any game you're running.

On a Deck, most people will leave it in gaming mode and only switch to desktop mode if they want to set up an emulator or something.
With the new machine, there'll be two types of users.
Those treating it as a console (TV, controller, couch) will mostly use it in gaming mode and possibly never press the desktop mode button.
Those treating it as a PC (monitor, keyboard, mouse, desk) will mostly use it in desktop mode and possibly never switch to gaming mode.

>Why does Gabe hate Windows so much?
What rational person doesn't hate Microsoft and Windows at this point? Win 7 was the last good thing MS ever made and it's been down hill ever since then. Win8 being a retarded cluster fuck back when they tried to get this shit to work on a smart phone as my breaking point, I barely even knew what a Linux was and initially legit considered becoming a iToddler when I saw this retarded tiling shit on my screen for the first time but then I read on Jewoogle that Ubuntu is a super duper easy to use OS, it actually frustrated the every living fuck out of me but I did enjoy the fact that it was less resource hungry and eventually learned there were distros that weren't shit that traded Microsoft telemetry for Amazon's telemetry.

Also proton is a god send because I could barely get shit to work half the time in standard wine, granted I'm not even all that tech savvy but just stubborn.

>>725979671
>Same reason he's making a Linux console, so you're 'locked in' to steam primarily
There's nothing stopping you from using alternative platforms like GOG DLsite or Itch IO anon. In fact why don't you go put your money were your mouth is an go buy a vidya game from one of those store fronts if you hate monopolies so much.

He made the SteamOS to kill Microsoft's monopoly on PC gaming with Windows. Releasing SteamOS to other handhelds and releasing a desktop version of the SteamOS for the Steam Machine is a clear challenge to Microsoft's next gen plans with Xbox which they converted into Windows gaming now. Microsoft will try to copy Valve like how Sony copies Nintendo.

It has nothing to do with Windows' quality, but the third party software that has latched onto it. Even the way Valve doesn't always work because of DRM

There's a lot of reasons to hate Nu-Windows, for me the final straw was seeing fucking ads in my file manager.

>muh bad graphics
Most of us PC gaymers are using shitty intel potato's with second hand mid range graphics cards from before the era of full on collective retardation when people started throwing away their money at crypto speculation NFT's and Ai slop.

If the GabeCube is sold at a reasonable loss it would legit be a major upgrade for me and I might drop my plan to build a new PC out of a Silverstone case I've been eye balling but I'll wait to see how non shill reviewers react once they have one themselves first. Could be a great deal especially if DDR5 RAM prices continue being fucked.

you can quite literally back-up DRM-free .isos for friends and pass them around.
I used to hook a poorfag friend up all the time.
You used to be able to sync your Steam to your GoG as well and do it with theirs.
Also for older games you can literally just right click > view CD key and use that.

His primary business is selling PC games but the primary OS used to play PC games is Windows, and he has no control over Windows while it has been constantly getting worse and worse. If Windows fucks up in some major way it could severely impact PC gaming and as such Gabe's business, so he wants to build a viable alternative such that PC gaming and by extension Steam are not completely vulnerable to MS fuckups.

He got scared of the Microsoft store stuff and decided to hedge bets by investing in Linux so that steam could never be hamstrung by an external company.
proton and all that is purely a defensive move against Microsoft control.

Microsoft on the other hand is getting cosy with hardware manufacturers so that in the future your motherboard/ram might only run Microsoft Approvedā„¢ Secureā„¢ OS and Software, which our toothless anti-trust laws would probably just let this happen.

moral of the story is Microsoft always will be and always has been an evil company.
>>
>>725979089
Gabe doesn't hate windows but the reason he's invested in Steam OS is to have a back up plan since at one point when Microsoft was making Windows 8 they considered locking down all other app stores like steam to create a walled garden for the windows store. Gabe didn't like having his company's future be dependent on Microsoft being retarded so making a linux OS that's easy to use and designed for gaming for your customers to fall back on is insurance to maintain a user base for Steam in case Microsoft shits the bed for PC gaming as a whole.
