The first game's limited mobility led to combat encounters being more strategic and puzzle-like. You had to pick the right weapon for the job, or else you're going to eat shit. In the sequels, weapon selection means nothing thanks to strafing removing the need for careful positioning and every weapon can now be used in every encounter carelessly.

Enemies and their unique distinctions mattered more in 1, like for example the claw monsters on orxon which necessitates a close quarters weapon, you try to blatser you'll have a way harder time, there's lots of varied enemies which force you to adapt in conjunction with Ratchets more restrictive movement means you have to utilize more niche weapons sometimes.

A very first playthrough of the game will always have situations where the player feels like they hit a roadblock because they keep using the wrong weapons. Just watch any stream of someone playing the game for the first time and you'll see. That never happens with any other game in the series.

yeh, the game just turned into a third person shooter with platforming

for ME the series got lost when it turned into some space marine bullshit starting with R&C2. i liked original ratchet a lot more, he was just a lowly mechanic from some random ass planet but later in the series hes a 5x world champion hero type mercenary niqqa

Strafing has been in the series since the first game
You get it once you get access to the rocket pack
>>

He's wrong though
New mechanics don't exist in a vaccuum. Strafing would have been fine if they designed the enemies around it. And hell, to an extent, they did. I remember 2 having enemy types that charged directly at you, which invalidated any strafing you were doing
No, if anything ruined the series, it was the introduction of sniper weapons

Why the fuck does EVERY game need to have an obsessed loser attached to it now? The fuck do they even come from?

Yeah but come on, calling that janky rocket boost sidestep "strafing" is a stretch. It’s not integrated into core combat flow like in 2 and beyond-it’s a gimmick for specific traversal segments, not a foundational movement tool. Strafing with lock-strafe mode in later games fundamentally changed how you engage with enemies. In 1, you had to stop, pick a weapon, commit, reposition manually-there was weight to everything. Strafing made the series smoother, but also more brainless.

Zoomers will watch 45 min speedrun history videos on this series and make threads about this series instead of playing it.
