Dual boot will always be kinda shit, audio works perfectly nowadays. I recommend just sticking to Linux only if you don't need your computer for work that can't be done on it. Tablets work just fine, but most commercial art software doesn't. As for the distro, I always recommend Arch with KDE or GNOME, its "hard" to install for the first time but it doesn't get on your way, doesn't assume insane defaults and has the most software of any distro. If you have the time to learn it's definitely worth it

I recently switched to Cachy (Arch) after avoiding anything Arch based due to how insufferable the users are.

They were right. It's literally the best. There are a slew of issues I had that I figured were just Linux, but were indeed Ubuntu issues. Not a single one has reared its head since I switched to Cachyos, one of which was audio crackling or even completely breaking at times til I restsrted the audio service.

I completely understand why they shill Arch so heavily now. It comes less preconfigured, but is the better choice without question. I feel really dumb for avoiding it for so long just because of the vocal users.

Games are on average more stable than Windows but you run into more visual bugs because compatability layers. My controller has the left analog stick as the dpad by default. I have to launch retroarch 2 or 3 times to get audio out of it. It is not hassle free but once you are able to do cool shit like having animated wall papers or booting straight into kodi for a television type experience with one click on the sddm (login screen) it ain't so bad

I had an nvidia card until a couple of years and it wasn't too bad. As long as you make sure to install the proprietary driver and not the open source one almost everything will work, you won't have access to the most advanced features (or so they say, I never really missed anything) and performance will likely be a bit worse than on windows but that's it.

This is mostly because until a short while ago nvidia entyrely refused to give any documentation to the open source driver developers, which wouldn't be too terrible if they gave proper attention to their proprietary ones, which they don't. Most CPUs come with an iGPU now, most people still use Nvidia and most distros have support for PCI passthrough, so it's super easy to just spool up a Windows VM, get more powerful tools from the host Linux and avoid Windows sabotage at the host level.

Arch+KDE+Wayland works on my machine. Used to be Nvidia but now I'm with AMD (9070XT). Steam games work out of the box, non steam games need a Heroic Launcher or Lutris entry and that's it 99% of times.

Being an nvidia user on linux is kind of suffering.
I cannot set my monitor to its max refresh rate if I want to use adaptive sync.
On wayland I have to run applications through xwayland in order to get decent performance (firefox stutters on wayland mode). I use Wayland because I do use HDR.
Gamescope is buggy on nvidia as well. I often think of switching to a setup where, if I want to play with HDR, I just have a gamescope session separately, but that doesn't work so well and I get a crash here and there (and I haven't managed to find a way to enable VRR on a gamescope session, only HDR works well).
Can't undervolt properly.
Nvidia driver updates are as exciting as terrifying, because sometimes they break to the point you can't even use certain resolutions anymore.
I'm pretty much ignoring any gaming performance issues at this point, I'm not even bothered about that anymore
The only good things about nvidia on linux I've seen so far: VRR works over HDMI 2.1, had less trouble with getting davinci resolve to work well, and that's about it.

I switched to Arch half a year ago. Distro doesn't matter much beyond what package manager and default repos you prefer to have. Bazzite or Nobara are probably the easiest choices if you just want something that runs games.

For software compatibility most games in Steam will work through Proton out of the box. Sometimes a specific version of Proton has better compatibility, but that amounts to looking the game at Protondb and changing it on the launch option dropdown menu. Lutris does a similar thing for games outside steam.

Software that will not work is games with kernel level anticheat. Includes stuff made by Riot Games, newer Battlefields and Fortnite. Also Adobe software, but I've personally always drawn on Krita so it newer bothered me.

AMD GPU's certainly do have a higher success rate of just working out the box with Troonix with zero tinkering in my personal experience but so long as your not using some obscure meme distro or running bleeding edge beta software in your PC your 4070ti will probably work just fine. Worst comes to worst you might have to downgrade or upgrade your GPU drivers depending on whatever problem you run into.

I have used EVERY SINGLE DISTRO under the sun, for multiple weeks too. One month I did a new distro every day, I wipe my system constantly.

The only distro I'd really recommend is KDE Linux but I can't since you have wrong card, so I have to recommend you PikaOS Linux. That uses Gnome but actually works. I only use KDE Linux because I prefer KDE now but PikaOS is goated out the fucking wazoo.

I have nvidia and the last time I tried linux it felt kind of shitty.

Install something with KDE Plasma desu. Kubuntu's a good option since large swaths of the Linux community assume you're on an Ubuntu variant, there's also openSUSE and SteamOS (when SteamOS finally comes out lol).

Either way, the first thing you do: Install Steam. It's so good, it's got the Proton compatibility layer built in, everything just works (unless you try to play something with kernel level anticheat but those games are basically rootkits so you shouldn't be playing them anyways)

I'm pretty sure it's broken only if you have more than one graphics device. Instead of disabling hardware acceleration or removing the PrefersNonDefaultGPU line from the desktop entry (both of which will fix the crashing but the latter then requires adding some shit like DRI_PRIME=1 to games' environment variables to make them use the non-default GPU while Steam doesn't), I just went into BIOS and disabled my worthless integrated graphics, and now the Steam client works with hardware acceleration turned on.

it really depends anon. speaking about gaming specifically; WINE and steam proton have really come a long way since the 2010s. the only real issues you will run into are multiplayer games with anti cheat that simply do not like WINE, and modding games. other than that most things are click and play and steam makes it even more retard friendly (which is good for me).
for example, for GTA IV and GTA V you simply will not be able to use scripthook .NET mods because for some reason WINE/Proton just cant install the needed dependencies. other than that, you will need to specify which .dlls must be loaded. using the GTA scripthook example again, so you would need to use winetricks/protontricks to go into the wrapper (the environment the “windows” application is installed in) and add d3d9.dll as a native library or someshit. speaking of wrappers, opening filebrowsers from within windows apps or games running in WINE/proton, it will think the wrapper is C:, so you will have to get used to backing out and going to My Computer and finding your way from there.
