The same reason all niche cultures die. They either homogenize with regular culture or regular culture gets invited in and drowns out the original qualities that made that culture identifiably itself. Gaming got the latter, under terms like "broader audience" and Mountain Dew/Dorito promotions with IPs specifically marketed to knuckledraggers who wouldn't have cared to learn to install a SoundBlaster 5 years prior.
Every millennial internet culture like Newgrounds and YTMND ended up getting funneled into Flipnote Hatena.
