>>725996426It was a significant factor. Parents had been hemming and hawing over the fact that consoles weren't backwards compatible for years. Acting like it was some planned obsolescence scheme instead of an inevitable consequence of progress. The launch model PS2 had to contain a fully functional PS1 in it to make that possible. (The PS3 had to do the same with a PS2, and the Wii did the same with the GameCube. That was more or less the only way it could be done at the time.)
