Breath of Fire II is a fantastic JRPG because it has a snake girl in it. Remember if you play it to download the re-translation patch because the original translation is horrible. Now recommend more games with snake girls in them please.

Most games tend to really shy away from having non-human companions, for some reason, unless there's a big theme of them being present. I'm sure that the "Monster Girls and the Mysterious Adventure" games have one, maybe they're recruitable in some of the Disgaea games, but overall it will typically be generic NPC monster characters getting recruited.
